Grabbed a bottle of this for £20, I’ve been wanting to get into whiskey but didn’t know where to start. I drank this neat and enjoyed it, but reviews online tout it as being mostly 5/10

So, /ck/, what whiskey are you drinking and what would you recommend I buy next?

Never heard of Glen Keith. What makes it better than a non-distillery edition? it looks NAS and unfinished to me.
Anyway, I am a firm believer in "any glen will do" so now that you've got the basics covered try something peaty or something sherried. I recommend Ardbeg (though maybe Talisker if you're skeptical) and Lassanta/Ruben.

How does the Select compare to the 10 or QC?
I'm fairly skeptical because it seems like a younger 10 that wasn't made cheaper for no reason.
The QC also competes with the 10 in terms of price, which I'm not a fan of. You're kind obligated to try it if you like the 10, but you're just going to decide which is better and never buy the other one again. I much prefer 12-15-18 ranges where it's pretty clear they're trying to put out the best they can for a price point. Talisker worst offender.

Judging by the ££ I'm guessing you're in UK, which means, you might be able to get 'Ben Bracken' from Lidl, which is very cheap, but probably a good place to start. They do a 'Highland', an 'Islay' and a 'Speyside'. I tried the Islay and it was very good.

If you want to get into the real thing, then, first of all, check what deals there are. I usually buy something that's aged 10 or 12 and has a good sale price.

I really like smoky/peaty whiskies, but it's not to everyone's taste.

Glenfiddich is really nice, and probably a decent place to start. It's easy going. I wouldn't get a bottle of Laphroig or Ardbeg to start unless you know that's your thing.

I've never bought bourbon in the UK, I don't think there's much price difference between bourbon and scotch in UK.

The reason I recommend 'Ben Bracken' is, if you're new to whiskey you probably won't notice much difference between distilleries in a region. But the 'Ben Bracken' ones will give you some idea of the characteristics of the best known regions, Islay, Speyside and Highland.

This is all scotch of course, I don't know anything about the Irish whiskey.

Really now? Let us examine the facts. Jameson is 40% Irish with an additional distillation.
Glenfarclas 105 is 60% with an intense sherry finish.
I'd say those two are fucking far apart, you can even look at the tasting notes. The 105 is more towards pic related, less complex obviously.

Isnt it fucking obvious that you (can) dilute the Glenfarclas? Just goes to show you are clueless. I had both recently so I know what I am talking about. You add a ton of water and it becomes a nice strong flavored scotch that has a similar taste to the Jameson only better. You are also ignorant of the fact that the Jameson Black Barrel is also sherry'd to begin with. The Jameson Black Barrel is close to being a watered down Glenfarclas 105. The sherry in the Glenfarclas is not that thick (not like a Hughland Park, Glendronach), raisins, banana, chocolate and burnt apple are the primary tasting notes.

Dont listen to this idiot and consider buying the Glenfarclas 105 next. You won't be sorry. Quite strong flavours and great value for your money. Its a step up from the Jameson.

Not him but that information is widely available on whiskybase.
Generally stuff like the 22yr from Feis Ile 2019 is secondary priced around 500 euros. Basically any 20+ year old Caol Ila or stuff from the 80s and before sells high these days because of rarity and that they basically had very similar specs to Port Ellen, however I find similar aged Caol Ila is meatier and earthier then Port Ellen.
>>14809341
>The sherry in the Glenfarclas is not that thick (not like a Hughland Park, Glendronach)
Highland Park OBs barely use sherry though. Glendronach's newer stuff isn't that strong fill sherried either, probably on par with Glenfarclas.
I can get the comparison between Glenfarclas and Jameson/Midleton at times because they both have some similar ginger and floral, but they're still very different whiskies most of the time given the banana and thick oily note that comes out of a lot of Midleton distillate that isn't really there in Glenfarclas which is a lighter, green fruit forward spirit.

When people say this they always recommend a mixing whisky that could only conceivably be enjoyed neat by someone who inherently loves whisky (even the bad stuff), or they recommend a super light scotch with no flavor.
If you want to get into whisky try something top shelf with moderate intensity. An 18 year old Speyside, or a distillers edition with an age statement from any region. And move down in price from there.

way to go, you've described all bourbon
maker's is softer than pretty much every macro bourbon. It's not a perfect choice but it's a better introduction than jack daniel's. Buffalo trace would also be valid, but half of the US doesn't get it reliably enough to consider

having a palate saturated with sugar makes it much harder to perceive the sweetness of spirits, pretension has nothing to do with it

>> No.14824882

Got some Buffalo Trace at Winco for $21 to see what the hype is about. It's about as boring as I expected given it's low-rye, so I can see why it's popular. Completely inoffensive. Not as boring as Maker's Mark, but close. There's just a faint hint of wood in there that keeps it moderately interesting.

>way to go, you've described all bourbon
And yet you're saying to spend even less and go even lower quality when it comes to Bourbon. And I said soft is bad. You want intensity, complexity, and no gaping flaws.

You sound like you're describing what YOU want, not what a whiskey novice would want. Believe it or not, soft and ambiguously sweet is very approachable and is 90% of the reason buffalo trace is so successful.

>You're projecting. Nobody has this problem.
I work at a distillery, and several of my co-workers had this exact problem, they hated whiskey until they stopped eating/drinking sugar all the time.

And I still drink coke. Often right before / after neat whisky because people buy rounds. The sweetness of whisky is also besides the point. If that's what you want then you're better off with mountain dew because it actually delivers.
Whisky isn't as sweet as a dry wine. Or even beer most of the time. If your solution is give up sweet things so that you can taste more sweetness in whisky then fuck that, it's not for you.

I have not found much of a difference between the deferent tasting glasses. All of them make whisky smell less boozy, which impacts taste.
The reason I don't like the Glencairn is because the lip curves out, which means you need your nose to the ceiling to sip the last bit of your dram. I find this is less of an issue with a Copita.
Conversely wine glasses are an ongoing expense because of how fragile they are, and my Glencairn is fine after being dropped a bunch.
