I don't know what it is with Asiatics and their obsession with sugar and processed foods. Honestly, they'd put the US to shame if they were actually relevant enough for people to care about them.

the drink is more of a treat.

I've never heard of someone doing that, though. It's almost always made with tinned sweetened condensed milk. Why you'd have to resort to that outside of a jungle country is beyond me, but to each their own.

It's based, alongside turkish coffee. Both brewing devices cost on average $5, usually made of stainless steel, are durable as fuck, and last a lifetime.
The quality of coffee brewed is also pretty much on par with expensive versions of the phin/ibrik (which honestly are just slightly prettier, maybe slightly more better build versions, sold by hipsters at $30-40). Whereas with espresso machines any machine that costs less than $1000 is hot garbage, makes crap espresso and/or has so many flaws with the build and quality of design that'll autisically annoy you.

The only real difference is three piece vs four piece.
With a four-piece, the little tamper is loose and you need to press it firmly onto the coffee grounds.
With a three-piece, the tamper screws down onto a shaft and you just twist it into place.

I think it is colonial legacy that condensed milk and other preserved foods are commonly used. The colonists wanted their coffee tea etc with milk and had to use condensed since that is what was available, and the happy accident of Vietnamese coffee was created. I bet there were many more ersatz ingredients that just sucked and didn't survive.
