What beans are closest to the ones Brits eat? I want to try some.

I live in a townlet with a HyVee and a Walmart, so I'm particularly interested in ones I could actually buy locally. Are VanCamp's in tomato sauce close at all?

I just want to know what they're supposed to taste like. It might be nice to have savory beans for breakfast in the morning, too.

The Walmart probably has an international foods section. Have a look for a can of beans with (pic above related) color of label, and you are set. I've seen em in Nebraska so you might have them as well.

Your wal-mart should have them. As for what they taste like, something fairly bland in a tomato sauce. I haven't had the vancamps but if that sounds close to what I said, you should be fine.

Before any bongs jump down my throat for this, I like these beans. I eat them occasionally on toast, but they absolutely need either Worcestershire sauce or a malt vinegar or /something/ because they don't have much flavor on their own.

You can actually ask your walmart to order in imported goods for you ...

The walmart by my house has a huge selection of asian and Caribbean imported foods because of this.
They will sell the stuff regardless. Otherwise just order off Amazon...

For some reason I found some in an Asian grocery store. But mine is more like a super market. Maybe you can still look around? Or look for a place that does British imports near you.

If you're looking at importing, the most popular by far is probably Heinz's no added sugar one. The name is a bit deceiving as it's not particularly "savoury" since it's still sweetened with stevia extract instead of sugar like it used to be.

Having worked a lot in the US and Canada, though, I can safely say it's not starkly different from the generic store brand "beans in tomato sauce" you can find pretty much everywhere. Makes sense, anyways, since Heinz is an American brand and baked beans are an American dish. Depending on the region, some people will even assume tinned baked beans refers to the tomato sauce one and not the slow-cooked molasses/brown sugar ones. Really, I don't get where this whole "authentic British baked beans" thing came from. Feels more like a marketing thing to me.

Heinz is an American company and almost all its products are made in the US apart from a few smaller factories in other markets. Most Heinz products in Canada come from the US after they closed down their big factory in Ontario.

AFAIK, the main difference is that it's more sugary in America so I wouldn't expect the experience to be particularly exotic for you. Heinz in this country has 4.7g of sugar per 100g so go for one that has less than 5g per 100g.

If you wanna improve the flavour of your beans, I add a little butter to thicken it up (too much and it will go sticky like peanut butter), a little tomato puree and some dried basil. Whatever you have it with, salt and vinegar will help britify it.

Van Camp's Pork and Beans, I've been told by a couple Brits, is really close. It's "pork" and beans just because it has a little pork fat in it, but it's just mildly sweetened tomato sauce and beans.

Interestingly enough, Heinz doesn't actually market a version of their beans without brown sugar or molasses in the US. This is probably where the whole "British baked beans" thing originates from, though they do market them in other countries like Canada. Once again, though, the product is still made in the US, just packaged for export.

Baked beans are legit every now and then but it's easy to get sick of them if you overdo it. They're best in the context of a fry up or on toast, but going back to my student days they were insanely versatile. You could pretty much chuck in whatever spices you felt like and it worked. Also tried balsamic vinegar a few times which worked too.
