I live with my brother in a college apartment and I can't cook for shit, and he isn't exactly great either. What are some cheap and relatively easy to make meals that are /ck/ approved?

Pro-tip: Hold food over a heat source, such as a "fire" or a "stovetop". Humans make objects called "pans" or "skillets", and we use these as vessels to heat or "cook" foods. When the food is "cooked", you'll know.

Cheerios were my sustenance in college

However if you really must persist then here's the recipe for a bacon stir fry

Put a frying pan on a stove top on medium low heat. Add a half teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil, also known as about a thumb (2d area of your thumb). Dont let the oil smoke, thats too hot.

Slice bacon into pinky finger sized strips. Make a fistful.

Throw it in the pan and stir it a few times per minute so that it doesnt stick or burn.

Meanwhile, chop some green onions, maybe 3 fingers worth. Can also do a single garlic clove if desired. Throw those in.

Now get out your mushrooms while thats cooking. I prefer shitake but you do you. Cut the stems off because ew. Wash the mushrooms, theyre slimey and have dirt all over.

Chop them into small fingertip sized chunks. Throw them into the pan, which by now hopefully has a bit of oil to cover them.

Add a teaspoon of soy sauce, a teaspoon of spicy korean bbq sauce if you have it. stir it a bunch and let most of the water come out of the mushroom and bacon over the next 10 mins.

Let it cool down 7 mins in the bowl and add salt to taste that that time. Enjoy this recipe it works for basically anything

You need a big pot for this, but only a single hotplate.
Put some fat in the pot. Butter or oil, whatever you have. Get the pot hot.
Brown 1 pound of ground beef.
Add 1 onion, keep cooking til onion is a bit soft.
Add entire bag of coleslaw mix and stir.
Let it wilt down til half volume.
Salt and pepper to taste comes now.
At this point you can stir in almost any sort of salsa, tomato sauce, hot peppers etc.

Sort of a very lazy cabbage roll dish that I lived on for weeks at a time while in College.

put some chickpeas in a pan with oil, add sausage of choice, add spices of choice, turn heat off when cooked to desired texture and add some type of green herb

aside from basic things like just learning to fry meats on a skillet, surely you have a microwave, the hot tip is that those 99-cent frozen steam-in-bag vegetables are indispensable for the untrained young man trying to learn to feed himself. Green beans, broccoli florets, Broc/cauli/carrot blend, Mixed Veg, etc. whatever's to your taste, throwing one in the microwave while you make whatever else is a zero-effort cheap instant side dish that can help pad out a meal and just having something to accompany whatever-other-garbage can go a long way. Don't LITERALLY live off JUST frozen pizzas and boxed mac-n-cheese and ramen and horseshit.

Other than that just learn to fry a chicken breast in a skillet and sautee and onion and you're maybe 80% of the way there. Good luck in your baby-steps to self-sufficiency. No joke, they're the most important steps you can take.

rice and beans.
1.) For quick rice, make minute rice in the microwave or something
1a.) If you have normal rice, put it in a pot, rinse it a couple of times, then put your pointer finger straight into the water. When your finger touches the rice, the water level should be up to your first knuckle. Heat on high, then when it's all bubbling, cover it with a lid and put on low or simmer. Cook for like 45-55 minutes or until all the water is absorbed by the rice.

2.) If you want to add some veggies and flavor to the mix, sautee some onions and garlic in a little oil, and then add whatever veggies you want after. Once they're about cooked, add beans
3.)Pour entire can of beans (liquid included, but I drain a little bit of it) into the pan or pot (whatever can hold it)
4.)Add whatever sounds good to you like any spices or sauces
5.) When it's heated and all the flavors are mixed in, you're done. I then just throw the beans into the rice pot and eat it with a spoon. If you make the beans the way you like them it's really good.
For breakfast
A) I just buy old fashioned oats, cook them how they say on the box, then I dice a whole apple and throw it in because eating plain oatmeal is gross. I don't add sugar cuz I try to avoid that.
B)I make two pieces of toast, spread some peanut butter on it, then slice up half a banana and spread out the slices on the peanut butter. Pretty delicious breakfast.
C)Scrambled eggs and toast. Butter up a pan then crack some eggs in there and whisk em around until they're not super runny. Put on toast

Roasted potatoes
1.) Chop up some potatoes into like quarters or something bite-sized
2.)toss them with minced garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, and whatever spices you like until they're well covered with oil and spices
3.) oil up a baking sheet and dump the potatoes onto it
4.) oven to 350 and cook for 30 minutes, flip them, then 30 more minutes or until desired crispiness.

More eggs for supper with steamed vegetables
Some canned soup if I'm running a sodium deficit or still hungry
The protein smoothie is by far the most expensive part of this diet but its so filling and a single bag of frozen fruit will last you at least a week, and the protein powder will last months

I like to cut up a LOT more veggies than he does, such as onion, carrots, celery, parsnips (great flavor in this application), garlic, and potatoes. Chunk up all of the veggies, put them into a large baking dish, toss with a small amount of oil (chicken fat will drip down onto them), salt, pepper, maybe some thyme or other herbs.

It takes a little while to cut all that up, but it's basically foolproof and fucking delicious. Save the chicken bones and make chicken stock with it. If you've never had real stock in a soup before it's definitely worth it. I freeze mine for later.

Here's an easy favorite of mine I literally just got finished making, it's more breakfast themed but you can make it whenever it's not like food has a schedule:
>Pretty much buy any kind of meat of your choice like ground beef, pork or chicken. Even canned Chicken or tuna would work if that's your thing. Whatever you like or is cheapest (a lot of stores will mkr down close dated meats a couple bucks so that's always a great choice if you know you're going to be cooking in the enxt day or so. My personal favorite is spiced ground sausage.
>Chop and onion and let it brown in a pan with some butter or oil of your choice, throq in the meat and let it brown.
>Once the meat is browned crack in 3 or 4 eggs, or however many tyou want for several servings or people.
>Stir it around and let the eggs scramble, while soaking up all the juices. Add seasonings of your choice or cheese if the budget calls for it. Cooked rice isn't a bad idea either. Pretty much anything to fluff it up.
That's pretty much it. The ingredients are really up to your discretion or preference. I just used a sausage I diced up and some garlic, and added some shredded pepperjack at the egg phase. I've also used a couple slices of bacon, took them out and chopped them up while the egg cooked in the grease with everything else, then added back in. Go nuts, or don't. I don't care.

Don't buy salad dressing. One part vinegar to three parts oil is all you need. Can add honey for sweetness, lemon juice for brightness, and always salt your salads!

Balsamic vinegar + olive oil + honey + mustard + lemon juice goes really well on baby arugula

Apple cider vinegar + sesame oil + honey goes really well on a red cabbage and apple salad. Sprinkle some celery seed on it as well.

Taste your food as you make it

Save your vegetable trimmings in a gallon bag in your freezer and use them to make vegetable broth (google this, my veggie broth is usually onion, garlic, carrot, celery, parsley, mushroom)

In a big pot, cook a chopped up onion and some carrot for TEN minutes to caramelize it really well. Add some garlic for a couple minutes, as well as some curry powder and cumin. If you like spice, add a chopped serrano at this point. Throw in some dry red lentils and cover with vegetable broth. Cook for a while, keeping the lentils hydrated until they reach the texture you desire. Throw in a whole bunch of spinach. Make a big portion and when you freeze it, put it in a gallon ziploc bag and press it as flat as possible. Cuts down on "freezer taste"

Here's an extremely basic recipe for marinara sauce. I recommend using more seasoning than the recipe calls for, as well as throwing in a can of tomato paste. If you double the recipe, you could stretch it out for 3-4 days worth of meals for two people. Just remember that you're filling up on the pasta, not the sauce.

Another basic recipe that can last a while is chili. You can also eat it with pasta, put it on hot dogs, baked potatoes, etc.

Op baked ziti easiest thing ever,
1 box 1lb ziti pasta
1lb shredded mozzarella cheese
32oz ricotta cheese
2 eggs
2 jars pasta sauce of your liking I use vodka sauce
Optional italian sausage I use the spicy one
Cook pasta to aldente it means soft but still a little hardness to the pasta
Mix half the mozzarella and all the ricotta and 2 eggs and 1 jar of sauce in a bowl add the drained pasta if you use the sausage cook it first then add to this mix it all together, put in a 11x14 glass baking dish, if it looks dry you can add a little of the second jar sprinkle the rest of the mozzarella on top, bake at 350 for 45 mins or until brown.
Last step enjoy, and if you cut it into squares you can put them in ziploc bags and freeze them for later dinners. Hope this helps op it's a cheap meal and when I'm broke it costs maybe like 5 bucks to make without the sausage.

You shouldn't be in college if you can't do something as simple as googling some fucking recipes. Seriously mate it's not hard unless you have legit literacy problems.
For me though, tuna patties was a good one. Pretty simple, and quick. Add rice and you have a decent meal. Here's a recipe for you.
https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/tuna_patties/

Another cheap one was pasta, a cheap jar of sauce and a mattesons sausage. I'm britbong though so don't know what the american one is. You could make the sauce yourself but I doubt you will. Trust bruv it's easy just look and you'll be good. The jars of sauce I would get were about 30 pence, proper cheap tesco stuff because budget was tight. If you can find cheap meat like chicken use that instead of your sausage. Cut open chicken to check if it's cooked proper. If it's pink get her a drink if its white give it a bite.

Hey, student here.
What you're gonna want to do is get cooking essentials such as a wok and rice cooker. A stock pot helps too.
Buy whole meat (e.g. whole chicken) and save the bones to make stock which can fill out your soups/stews/gravy. Also look into local laws for hunting. Squirrel, rabbit, and small ruminants make for a cheap and available food source.
Do not fear fat. Fat is your friend. Fear sugar. Purchase butter or, if poor, cream which you can make into butter. A good neutral oil for multiple use is also essential. Extra virgin olive oil and sesame oil are good additions.
Mirepoix, mirepoix, mirepoix. Dunno how many times I have to say it but if it's a euro recipe, it almost definitely needs mirepoix.
Save up and invest in a flavour pairing guide. Asian supermarkets (yellow and brown) stock a wide variety of spices (and the all-essential rice) to make your food palatable. These plus the unique combinations recommended by a flavour pairing guide can boost your cooking to an adequate level.
Bread is a fucking ripoff. Make sourdough at home you fucking lazy pussy. If you have no oven then make roti at home you fucking lazy pussy. Stop buying bread from supermarkets.
Also if you haven't started making fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, etc.) you are missing out on a low-effort nutritional goldmine, buddy.

You can buy one of those mondo curry powder things for like $11. Then you just mix it with canned chicken, tomato puree, and dried minced onion and you have like 8 meals for $3.

Go for some easy pasta recipes and make sure you follow the recipe as much as you can. Vegetable stir fry is easy as hell. Garlic butter steak literally takes 20 min at the absolute max. If youre asian (like me) and have abundant cooked rice at all times, you can make a ghetto ass fried rice with only onions, garlic, and bacon. Just pick easy shit with not too much prep that will take you less than 30 min and cook that for dinner instead of eating cup ramen or eating out.

Just make sure you follow the recipes and your food will come out edible

>eating out

Luckily I came across a nightmare meal and haven't really ordered out since. Thought I'd have some nice Thai food; garlic rice, Beef noodles, and stirfried veggies with chicken.

When i Got it I almost had to puke after a few mouthfulls beacause EVERYTHING was fucking submerged in oil! "light stir fry"? how about so much oil it put the US to shame. The rice tasted okay but it was SO FKING OILY. one of the few meals I had to throw out becaus e it was "inedible".

Ingredients you'll need
>deer steak
>3-6 new potatoes, depends how many whatever you want
>veg, like broccoli, carrots whatever
You could also add some kind of sauce, red wine sauce maybe? I don't know what pears with steak deer.
This'll be a decent meal for you, should last a decent few hours unless you're a fat arse
>chuck potatoes in a pan of water and the rest of your veg in a seperate pan of water
>boil them, once they're cooked they'll be soft. Make sure you turn down heat when it's boiling
>when they're done, drain then leave them out
>PAN ON
>little oil heat up in pan
>when pans hot, chuck steak in
>cook however long you preffer, I seriously hope you know at least different steak levels
>flip over, do it again
>when it's almost done, chuck veggies in pan, leave then for about a minute for little crunch
>take it all out when you're done, plate it up
>add sauce if you used it
That's what you should be doing if you're out getting deer steaks. Have you ever tried cooking a steak before you wandered over here? You live with your brother too so I still fail to see how you cant figure out how to google simple recipes and cook, but can get yourselves some deer. Who gets the steaks out ready to eat for you? You've got 2 brain cells between you two so I suggest you start rubbing them together; fuck your parents would be disappointed.

What do you mean by forced hire? You mean the company would be forced to hire them? Because that's fucking laughable. Here in britbonga you have student loans, and you only pay them back when you make a certain amount each year I think. Students are usually "poor" because they spend it all drinking and shit; Some have jobs and make okayish money, usually part time. Most students don't know what poor really is, they just like the excuse to ignore their sustenance problems. Most don't have an idea or lose it during college then fuck up and spend years in retail or something.

I'm assuming you were assigned to a place related to the degree you're getting, then you have the experience to move to another place. Is that so you can pay back whatever you owe to the government or for a different reason?

Learn to make a passable spaghetti.

Pound of ground beef (frozen 80/20; thaw 24h in fridge... just let it sit)
Brown/crumble in skillet
Dump in can of sketti sauce
Enhance with herbs if you're not completely poor
Stir/simmer

Cook pound of pasta
Drain (usually 1 minute less than it says on the box is right; residual heat/sauce finishing)
Combine with sauce

Probably around $7 + 25 minutes

Wash your dishes promptly afterwards. It doesn't save time or effort to wait to cleanup.
