Yes and no. If I'm being lazy, then yes. Grew up not having much of a family of my own but I was with a girl for a long time who was Japanese. We'd spend the weekends together and part of it meant helping out in the kitchen. There was no dad-boyfriend bonding shit like in anime, he was a doctor. So the only food I knew how to cook without a microwave for a really long time was Japanese. Nowadays it's boring to me. Everything tastes like either miso, soy sauce, sake, sweet or seasame. I still make it from time to time but it's mostly bar food like yakitori or yakisoba.

first off, we are chain store based outside of japan.
japanese food tends to be really expensive overseas so if you're going to get something, just get the 'flagship dish' of the restaurant. we are, for example, a ramen shop so i would only recommend getting a bowl of ramen since the majority of the side dishes are reheated and re-fried. we also make our own japanese curry that's pretty good but that's just our store.

depending on the size of your japanese community you can find a REAL japanese store where everything is handmade but the prices will reflect that.

ironically, all our staff meal is prepared fresh and by hand.

I'm thinking of making some yakitori this weekend; probably just some momo skewers and some shiitake (I don't wanna buy a bunch of different cuts of chicken).
What should I serve with it? I'm serving a total of 3 people, and we eat a lot of veggies.

Eel is VERY good and is my favorite type of sushi but I don't really agree that it tastes like chicken (or fish). It's very tender and flakey, but the taste has more substance than chicken, less bland. It fantastic, really. If you go to your local asian market you can get the pre-marinated eel that you can basically just throw in a pan and then have it over rice or whatever. It's pricey though, especially since Trump started the trade war with China. Most of it is imported from there.
