jack daniels is way too expensive for its quality. i guess it's probably a good mixing whiskey, but if you're mixing you can just go with the cheapest shit you can find and it won't matter. so what we're talking about here is drinking it neat and jack daniels is just inferior. they only age it for four years which isn't nearly enough time to get the smoothness you want and jd has always had this overwhelming charcoal flavor that i never liked

Yes and no.
If someone who has NEVER drank whiskey before wanted something from a store. They would almost always grab a handle of Jack Daniels as that is brand associated with whiskey due to how it is portrayed in movies, shows, music, and etc.
However, anyone with a developed taste of whiskey won't drink a neat or cocktail using Jack Daniels as there are better alternatives out there.
The only Jack Daniels I have in my whiskey cabinet is a bottle of Gentleman's Jack that was given to my as a gift from a friend.

Jack Daniels is only still notable for their branding than as a good whiskey. At least in my opinion. Oh, and there podcast isn't too bad. Only negative is that they obviously promote their stuff.

Am I retarded for not liking the taste of alcohol? I'm still under the drinking age for U.S. so I've never been able to really go out and try a proper drink, but the few times I've taken a sip of whiskey it tasted so fucking bad. Am I stupid or do I just need to truly experience a good drink?

Firstly, you're young. Harsher alcohols may still physically hurt you. As you grow older, your palate becomes less sensitive to strong flavors.
Secondly, you haven't drunk a lot of alcohol. Even milder stuff, beer and wine and so forth, helps you acclimatize.
When you get into your early twenties and begin to drink socially, you may begin to like whiskey, or you still might not. Even then, it's a matter of taste.

My sense of taste changed at around 22 to disfavor sweet things and favor bitter things (vaguely).
Cheap whisky tastes horrible, and it's fairly expensive to buy a whisky that tastes good neat. And even then there are divisive flavors, so just throwing money at the problem won't solve it. You have to get out there and try a few things.
And in the end you may not even like whisky at all. I've made my sister try a few whiskys and the best I've gotten out of here is an "oh, that actually wasn't that bad" after shotting it. As if when she got to $100 bottles the flaws were gone but there's still nothing to enjoy.

If you like this, you ought to try Paddy, Powers, or Teeling Small Batch as a more representative but approachable Irish whiskey; Tullamore is nice enough for mixing but, in my opinion, does not have a strong enough flavor to drink on its own.

i can get redbreast 15 for 50 euro which is pretty great value.
