Because it's called a fucking rice cooker. A can opener can be used for more than opening cans, that doesn't mean people do beyond one with a bottle opener. But yes, they can be used for more. Hot dogs are one type of food that people eat occasionally, especially during special holidays like the 4th of July. Usually they prepare it on a grill, because they were going to use the grill anyway for other foods. It's hard for me to believe that hot dogs are some kind of staple food that families regularly eat several days every single week. As such, a whole fucking hot dog steamer will never be worth it for small families who may only be cooking enough for themselves to eat. The only way a full fledged hot dog steamer would pay off is if you were a hot dog salesman. Why would you buy a hot dog steamer to make one or two hotdogs. Imagine cleaning that shit every time you wanted one fucking hot dog. A hotdog steamer is a great example of something Americans buy and use once for the novelty and then put it in the basement or some shit to collect dust.

A ricecooker consistently cooks rice in a easy, convenient manner, and also frees up a burner on your stovetop. Rice is a staple food, that you can pair with a gorillion things.

In other words, you are fucking retarded.

I used to be skeptical, having grown up always cooking it in a pot and finding it perfectly tasty and easy. But after having lived with someone who has one and using it a bunch I'd never go back.

The result is at least as good or I would agree even better than on the stove and it takes care of everything. I can just toss rice, liquid and maybe kale or onion or tomato whatever in there, throw it on and that's it. Go putter in the garden for a while and then whenever I feel like rice it's right there perfectly cooked and warm.

To quote Alton Brown

" Rice cookers are good. I like them and use them. If a tool is used almost ubiquitously by a culture—such as the rice cooker in Japan and parts of China—there's going to be a good reason for it. It's extraordinarily good at doing, yes, one thing but one thing you need to do right. I especially like the fuzzy-logic models which gauge when it's ready and switch to warming. Rice isn't easy.

But I wouldn't call that a unitasker. You can use a rice cooker to make steamed puddings and custards, make oatmeal in them over night. You have to ask, "What else cooks like rice?" Odds are, you can cook that in a rice cooker."

it frees up stove space while leaving you free to cook the real food. And imagine having lukewarm rice or lukewarm food depending on which you cook on the stove 1st. Fuck that

If you're gonna eat rice everyday, at almost every meal, yes, a rice cooker is not just helpful, it's essential. Cooks and keeps rice warm.

Gook here.

There are several really good things a rice cooker can do. You can steam eggs which is what poor people eat, you can steam pork sausages and the fat will glaze the rice, if you are making Indian/Persian food you can put hard spices in the water to flavor the rice (peppercorn, Turmeric, cloves), you can steam greens

Two steamed eggs, green and rice is 90% of your nutritional needs for the day so is popular for semi-homeless people who live in cubicles

This makes about as much sense as saying you've never read Mein Kampf, but you still think it's a shitty book because Hitler wrote it.

I honestly wish people would do this during introductory periods. Then I'd know wether or not it's worth the time and effort required to acknowledge their existence.
