What can I say the rest of Europe likes to copy our shit and doesn't that give some creedence to the superiority of the swedish meatball.

It isn't a sauce it's in fact a lingonberryjam that gets paired with what we simply call "brown sauce" and that's what completes the dish, you could switch the mashed potatoes with fresh potatoes like on christmas (yes meatballs is a common ingredient for the swedish christmas smorgasbord) but you can't substitute the brownsauce and lingonberryjam and whatever you do don't destroy it with ketchup.

And most places' gravy seems to be little better than powdered too. Maybe it's different on the west coast, but it's pretty shit everywhere in Toronto, Montreal, and Labrador, where I've tried about a dozen of the better rated places.

That does look good, have to go to Norway some day and refill some bread, champagnebrus, shrimp and that triangular pasty with melted chocolate inside it whatever it's called.

Btw there was an anon here earlier (the thread got deleted for some reason seeing as there was actual food discussion) that was interested in Scandinavian cuisine including cookbooks and recipes, you don't happen to know of any good Norwegian cookbooks that's a good foundation into Norwegian cuisine (gave tips on swedish ones but haven't got a clue on norwegian cookbooks), it wasn't really that much of an issue if it wasn't in English if I understood correctly, I was thinking so I can recommend it if it comes up again or maybe that person sees it.

Unless it's pioneer food or southern/soul food, most American food has been/is brought over by immigrants throughout our history and become a popular food. German and scandinavian ancestry are huge here in the midwest. There are lots of Irish in the south. New England would have the biggest WASP/anglo ancestry as well as French Canadian and Italian. Italian American food creations are huge in that area while down south it's so foreign to them that they go by red sauce vs white sauce and spaghetti vs "huh?". More recent immigration has brought us Mexican food to the point where it's part of south western and western cuisine and not foreign at all. It's popular all over, but the east coast restaurants tend to serve sloppa shit that's way different from what you'd get out west. Taco night, though Americanized like all the other food we adjust, is common in American homes like pizza night. Anyway, schnitzel is extremely popular in the midwest plus PA due to German ancestry and chicken fried steak and pork chops are huge in the south. Pic related are some popular dishes in the south. I'm not a huge fan of southern cuisine as they seem to avoid fresh produce at all costs and if they do use fresh produce to begin with then they bread and fry or boil/stew it, which is why every plate looks like all fried everything or discolored mush. Luckily I live in a tourist town, very small town but touristic nonetheless, and they have legitimate restaurant here to please the city folk. Also luckily I cook at home most of the time anyway.

Even before Ikea became so popular, people loved swedish meatballs for easy potluck, get togethers, and cafeteria food. It's possible that it was one of the foods that was advertised for TV dinner/frozen meal/microwave/crockpot stuff back in the 70's. Here in the deep south people toss frozen meatballs and grape jelly in a crockpot and serve at church functions. I'm really disappointed that I lost the photos I took of at a church function down here years ago when visiting in-laws. It would have made the /ck/ nightmare fuel hall of fame for sure. I'm tucked away in the northern mountains and haven't found a proper church group yet, so I don't know if I would come across a spread like that here or not. But what I saw in middle Georgia a few times I think would actually shock a lot of anons. It wasn't quite blue powerade turkey tier, but it was damn close. Whenever I try to look up southern potluck/church potluck photos, I can never find one that does it justice. Just think about how pic related is a "good" looking one set up for a photo then imagine the shit show you might find at a less refined gathering complete with green cream cheese sandwiches and vats of weenies in sweet mustard sauce and frozen meatballs swimming in grape jelly. I have never seen anything like it anywhere else.

The mustard was for the weenies and was just very odd to me. I'd never seen or heard of anything like it and, combined with the rest of the spread, was pretty vile looking. I tried a little bit of everything. Nothing made me gag/nauseous, but I would never make any of it or opt to eat it aside from the plain pork sandwiches. The way they prepare food that I've experienced in middle Georgia (again, just what I've experienced whenever visiting in-laws), it's never appetizing unless is properly made barbecue with sauce left to the side. To me, all the food (not just those potlucks) is like mush sloppa cafeteria rations sometimes with your typical shitty "chef"/"side" salad thrown in always with Kraft type shredded cheese, cheap pre-packaged croutons, and "bacon" bits or diced ham with dressing options of Kraft ranch and Kraft thousand island. It's like the people there never stopped eating post-WWII government rations and forgot how to make a single thing from scratch or in an appetizing way. I cannot really comment on the mountains since everyone I know well enough to socialize with here at the moment are city or out of state transplants. But the mountain people are generally considered weird by the rest of the state for maintaining a lot of old ways, and when the covid panic hit, people emptied the grocery store of legitimate food like potatoes, flour, meat, eggs, dairy, other produce and largely ignored the prepackaged stuff that a sane person would not consider a nutritious and/or cost effective food stuff worth stocking up on in an emergency. As opposed to the middle state area where the first thing everyone did was ravage the junk. Tomorrow is Sunday and almost every church has at least opened services back up somewhat, so I'm going to try a new one again until I find one I like. Maybe I will eventually get some interesting food pics.

I do think the specific area where I visit my in-laws as well as their own specific family culture and group of friends and churches and all that have a lot to do with it. I imagine you'd have a good food experience going to Atlanta, Savannah, the coast in general, and anywhere touristic. When you venture out to the places where tourists never go and the residents rarely leave the town or county lines, that's where things get really weird. The photos people post here of towns that are nothing but chain restaurants, Walmart, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and other national chains are quite accurate for some of these places if they are even nice enough to have that stuff. Otherwise it's a lot of really run down looking ghetto being the nigger belt and all.

I feel like the rest of the world has caught up to at least the American trash diet of the 2000's. For all that non-Americans love to rail on us, their countries are rapidly becoming fat convenience food consoomers. In Europe, at least France 15 years ago, it was the immigrants and young people who were the convenience and fast food eaters and mostly the immigrants who were fat. But they keep letting in so many fucking immigrants to all of these places that before they know it, their entire food culture will go by the wayside in favor of feeding the rapidly multiplying dregs of society who don't give a shit about quality food and many hundreds of years of their host country's food culture/overall culture. You need to be careful if you have an out of state plate and careful in general. I have never seen so many speed traps and so much petty traffic traffic enforcement anywhere else I've visited or lived.

>I feel like the rest of the world has caught up to at least the American trash diet of the 2000's. For all that non-Americans love to rail on us, their countries are rapidly becoming fat convenience food consoomers.

true there isnt much difference to europe and US broadly speaking anymore.. we lack some fast food options that you have but thats not because we dont want them... more because its not financially viable yet.

Np shit I mean this was literally in the middle of nowhere and just wilderness I was surprised there even was a house down there especially a police station/jail I mean how many cars can they see there one a night I've never experienced such a rigorous traffic control, here in Europe you can usually drive pretty much how you want to (as long as you know where the traffic cams are and usual places where the cops sometimes like to frequent when the weather is good) and traffic cams usually don't matter as much seeing as there are often a sign and as long as you put down the sunscreen and lift you head up a bit your face won't be in the picture and you can therefor not be fined (doesn't work in all countries seeing as some sends a fine to the owner of the vehicle no matter what)

My family heritage is French Canadian then of course back to France, but I don't know any French Canadian foods at all. My grandmother made "meat stuffing" for Thanksgiving that I've begun to suspect was tourtiere filling without bothering to make a pie. Are there any dishes that come to mind that really represent French Canada? Sorry, I'm not sure which part they were from mainly or if it makes a difference. Many were farmers and some were bakers and shoe cobblers. Two of my grandparents were born there and two of them were first generation American and grew up in French Canadian communities within the US (New England). Their food is/was typical American foods from the years they were raising children but never any disgusting fads, so late 1950's to early 1980's housewife classics (I see some on this list https://acultivatednest.com/50-recipes-from-a-1950s-housewife/).). Always on the healthy and balanced side and never anything remotely related to the south, midwest, southwest, etc. Definitely purely New England housewife classics, but since they never talked about their food heritage, I'm not sure if there's overlap. Any help is appreciated!
