Verdict: kinda smoky, a little bitter and VERY salty. Not bad but not great. Kinda just okay. Probably won’t make this again. What else can I cook with vegemite? It’s yeast extract so I assume use it for baking?

Spread it under cheese before making a melted cheese. There's a semi-savoury scroll that has vegemite spread inside the scroll with cheese melted over the top. You can also lob a spoon if it into a stew instead of salt. That's about it for conventional uses.

Why the fuck would you mix the vegemite with butter beforehand?
>get warm toast
>spread butter
>spread vegemite sparingly
wala

it's nice on buttered crackers and saltines, on plain bread but if you're a beginner don't use a lot of vegemite and always have it on buttered/margarined bread n crackers never dry.

Too much tb h. Try it with less as well sometime. Personally I prefer a little bit of neutral tasting margarine with mine, I think the added saltiness of butter is too much. As for other uses, try putting a spoonful in a stew or a soup, it's kind of - not a replacement - but an addition to stock/broth. Adds good u m a m i.

I only really like it by itself honestly, it's kind of overpowering. Not even a big fan of it with cheese like many others are. Fresh white bread I cut into thick slices or white toast remind me of childhood and are my favourite.

it looked good in the end, the compound butter thing is something I've never even heard anyone do here lol but seems to have worked.
>>14599481
>baking yeast
Won't work, it doesn't contain live yeast. It's left over product from breweries that is then heated up for ~24 hours and then packed with salt. That process kills any live yeast left.
It can be somewhat useful in making alcohol but only because the ingredients could feed any added live yeast.
If you know how to make a cinnamon roll, you can make a savory vegemite version by replacing the cinnamon filling with vegemite & cheese.
You can whack in a tablespoon into a stock/stew.
I've heard some people made banana & vegemite sandwiches.
Apart from that it's basically cheese + vegemite on toast (or a toasted sandwich/pannini).

Kiwifag here. Putting vegemite/marmite on crackers is amazing, that and on toast are the only ways I'll eat it anymore, since I had to endure cold, soggy vegemite sandwiches for school lunch as a kid. And put it on normal toasted white bread, don't brown the toast AT ALL, but make sure the bread is crispy and warm. Vegemite goes a long way, so you only need a little bit. Butter has to be spread on hot toast before you spread the vegemite.

>> No.14599912

In 1919, following the disruption of British Marmite imports after World War I and prior to the introduction of Vegemite, Callister's employer, the Australian company Fred Walker & Co., gave him the task of developing a spread from the used yeast being dumped by breweries. Callister had been hired by the chairman Fred Walker. Vegemite was registered as a trademark in Australia that same year. Callister used autolysis to break down the yeast cells from waste obtained from the Carlton & United brewery. Concentrating the clear liquid extract and blending with salt, celery and onion extracts formed a sticky black paste.
