it's fucking stupid. definitely a meme. Just think, when was the last time someone told you to grind salt? oh, no problem using kosher salt from a box, but with pepper it loses flavor and essence if it's pre-ground? Gimme a freakin' break!

Not a meme. They're better. The disposable upside down grinder in your picture, though, may not be the best if you are comparing a real grinder to preground, though. I've always thought they seemed a bit loose on top, making the grounds stale.

A nice grinder is adjustable screw on top style or even battery operated or manual, letting you change a tightness of the grinder blades to grind fine to coarse in a spectrum; fine for table service and finished food, coarse for marinades and rubs to pronounced crusts on meats. It's also good to have whole peppercorns in your house for stocks and broth making, pickling, etc. One only has to taste test side by side to feel the extra burn-like bite in fresh ground versus stale. I'd suggest the pic you have only like when you're camping, vacationing, or a desk at work for like caesar salad takeout. They are probably only made for restaurant caesar salad so waiters aren't bothered getting the real grinders and customers don't wait.

The only difference between black and white pepper is the white has had the outer hull removed. Go look in your pepper can, it's a mix of tiny black and white specks.

And saves you over $40. To be fair though, the whole point of the expensive ones is to brag without speaking. OP's picture is perfectly servicable for day to day and can be purchased at a dollar tree. For a formal, place setting dinner, a nice $15-$25 one is fine. But there will always be nouveau riche, style fags whose persona is solely based on what they own.
Anyone with a $1000 lalique pepper grinder is Image obsessed, and likely is soon parted from their money.

More surface area = faster breakdown. Leaving peppercorns whole will keep them fresher longer. That being said, if all your spices are McCormick it's probably not going to make that much of a difference. You're better off getting spices from a reputable specialty shop and buying your own peppermill and grinder (or mortar and pestle).

They are 110% worth it. Pre ground black pepper has like no taste. Grind the peppercorns before eating and you get to enjoy the full flavor.

>> No.14596269

>>14595103
Not the one in your picture, a real pepper grinder.

Freshly ground pepper tastes better, there's aroma and flavor you miss out with the pre ground stuff.

Also just by the way, don't buy shredded cheese, grate it yourself.
Shredded cheese is coated with cellulose and other ingredients to keep it from clumping up in the bag.
Because of this, the taste and the way it melts is completely different AND inferior to shredding your own cheese.

>> No.14596666

>>14596269

The only difference between the one in OP's pic and a normal pepper grinder is that a normal one is refillable.

Right on with the shredded cheese, though. If anything it is just best to get blocks/wheels of cheese, a grater, and a cheese slicer.

Ideally you'd want to get a proper mill and peppercorns, but even those prepackaged ones are going to be better than the preground stuff

>> No.14596913

>>14595103
my experience with these vs pre-ground pepper is at least these ones, when you tip them over a pan while cooking, or a steaming hot plate of food, won't let a bunch of moisture into the container which makes pre-ground pepper clump up and does god knows what to the flavor. this wouldn't happen with a normal pepper mill either.

the clumping does happen in the mccormick salt grinders tho especially when they're nearly empty.

For a while I was into grinding my own pepper because I thought I was the shit. But then my grandfather died and one of my favourite memories was his Irish stew and his poached eggs on toast. Both dishes he finished off by sprinkling a dusting of ground black pepper over the top before serving. So I went back to ground pepper and never looked back.
