Grifo Nero di Troia, pretty good, full bodied, not very acidic considering what it is, red berries, sweet-ish black berries, a bit woody, soft and not too dry
Guerrieri-Rizzardi Chiaretto Classico, good enough for the price but I swear to god, the day I find a chiaretto that doesn't taste like it's watered down I'll buy 10 cases of it

Supermarket wine will most likely not have much tannin. Supermarket wines are chosen to be easy drinking and inoffensive and tannin can be challenging to many palates.

You're better off going to a dedicated wine store and asking a clerk for help.

As a generalisation, Italian wine (not just Italian varietals, but wine made in Italy) is made to be eaten with food, so a lot of their reds are quite generous with tannin. Nebbiolo and Chianti are generally good bets, but seriously, consult the store clerk.

IMO you shouldn't bother learning about geography in this way at all. There's so much variation in flavor within a wine region in the same year that knowing the region becomes meaningless. I have never, upon discovering a wine that I can't obtain, been able to buy a comparable substitute of that varietal from that region and year.
There's something to be gained from learning the varieties (but even that has tonnes of exceptions), and there's something to be gained from learning the layout of your wine shop if you are systematic about your purchases.
Beyond variety and age (with ~5 year accuracy) you're not really going to gain much insight into the flavor of the wine from what's written on the bottle.
Just taste everything.

Oh cool, it's Henri IV.

Jurancon probably offers better value than Sauternes or Barsac, nice.

I really like Gobelsburg, unfortunately it can be hard to find Gruners even in some of the better stocked wine stores where I am. Gobelsburg makes a really nice Riesling too, I generally don't really like sweet wines but Rieslings, dry and sweet, have really been growing on me.
I love Bordeauxs too, right now Chateau Des Antonins has been my go to. I picked it up on a whim one time because the label looked nice and it was a 12 dollar superieur and I keep coming back to it.
I've been drinking the hell out of Mary Taylor's Valençay. It's a nice even blend of pinot noir, malbec, and gamay and it really highlights every aspect of each grape well, just enough backbone from the malbec but it has some really nice fruit forward notes from the gamay and pinot.

Just got 16 bottles of the 2010 Spanna Bernardo, and another 8 of the regular 2015 Spanna. Both great Piedmont years. Total was just under $650 for the lot. I love this stuff.

Also got a couple other Piedmont items but they're still in transit.

I've had this and it's worth every penny. Like suddenly, life had new meaning. Poorfags will never live though such an ethereal experience.
