I use a clove or two to stick a bay leaf to a shallot when I am making bechamel or morney sauce or even just an old-school baked mac-n-cheese. Then you can remove them easily at the end.

Recently I have been getting bold with bay leaf, I've been adding 4 where I would add 1 or 2 and still not sure if I'm even noticing them. I received an Italian spice blend in a grinder as a gift and really liked it, the ingredients were your basic salt, pepper, herbs de province, and then it had lemon peel and bay leaf all in large chunks. It felt weird knowing I was grinding up and fully eating bay leaves, but boy it was good on things like potatoes or chicken.

I've been told you can microplane it, but I have no microplane to test it.

I like to use them in my brine. Add some oranges and some black peppercorn to the brine with some whole cloves. Ground clove is really good in a ham glaze with honey and brown sugar. It's also really good in barbacoa with chipotles in Adobe. If your turned off by cloves it's because your not using it properly. And also most likely using to much. It has a very strong spice. A little goes along way.
