My nan is from a rice-eating country in Asia, but not East Asia.
Asians have fucking heart-attacks with how her people cook rice. My grandmother would boil salted water, add unwashed rice, boil rice until it's almost, but not quite, done cooking, drain and THEN wash that shit. Shake rice of excess water, add back to the pot, add a lid and set the pot to high heat. She'd keep her hand on the lid and when the lid was too hot to keep it there comfortably, she'd turn off the heat and do whatever the fuck else needed doing for dinner. After about 10 minutes or so in the steam of its own residual heat, the rice would be done and it would be cooked perfectly.
Good system, really. Works for plain white rice as well as, with some minor modifications, for cooking plov and other rice-based dishes.

I'm Indian, I've visited my family in India plenty of times as well as having parents that are still fresh off the boat 30 years later, and basmati rice is cooked like pasta. I made indian food for an indian guy I know the other day
he was talkin bout how whypipo don't know how to season

so what I did was took a can of condensed tomato soup, mixed it up with some premade spice stuff I got in the "international" section of the grocery store, and I just simmered some chicken chunks in it for about 25 minutes

I gave it to him and he was sayin "wow this white boi tried to make me some indian food"
but then he tasted it and was blown away by it, put some pictures on instagram and stuff

little did he know the entire dish was made of cheap bullshit and took no more effort than popping a can open.
it just goes to show quality is often about perception
next time I'm going to make some of my signature vegetable soup (jarred spaghetti sauce with a splash of bloody mary mix to thin it out)

Food doesn't need to be seasoned to shit to taste good, it has to be seasoned right and white people are better at that than Indians imo. Maybe short or medium is just better for frying than long, but I feel like everyone around here is using jasmine. Seems everyone says the Asian places always use jasmine rice. I don't exactly eat enough rice to tell what kind it is on the spot though.
I swear I've seen a video of a guy who did boil rice to make fried rice as well in some YouTube video. Not everyone has leftover rice in the fridge all the time, and I've found boiling rice can give that firm texture you need for fried rice. So might really be a good way for some quick fried rice.

The whole "use knuckle" thing sounds dumb. Doesn't everyone have different sized hands meaning the knuckles will end sooner, or is the first knuckle just universally about the same and I never heard about it? Then again, I guess if you're in a homogeneous society before the 21th century this probably isn't much of a problem.
