I wanted to get some Japanese booze, not like whiskey or anything but maybe some shochu and stuff like that. What online retailers are reputable?

I agree, I just bought a Sex Bicycle shirt, along with an "Everybody dance like there's ass in your pants" shirt, as well as a great outdoor fight poster. Big fan. Miss Onstad.

Not really it is way easier to find soju than shochu.

OP if you are using it for Chu-Hi, just use vodka. A fair amount of the canned ones in Japan use that or just generic filtered distilled alcohol.

Seriously unless you are really anal or going to skip it straight, vodka

You should specify your location, drizly.com is reputable where I am in NY.

I''ve tried that Jap whiskey, it's way overpriced for what it is. If it's a gift fine, but I wouldn't buy that for myself.

lived in Japan for 13 years and travelled half the world here.
honestly, it's not worth it financially to get sake, shochu or umeshu overseas.
at best, you'll get a 400yen bottle of Gekkeikan for $50 US dollars or equivilent cuz of import tariffs and taxes etc.
it's fine when it's 12yo 40% whisky with good tasting notes but unless you're Japanese or an uber wine snob you're not gunna notice the taste difference between most sakes and shochus enough to justify dropping big dollars on brands you know are $3 for 4L in Japan.

And like everything in Japan, it's more based on the texture and smell of the product than the actual taste. the tasting notes are really subtle at best and to notice a difference you have to start dropping serious money on bottles of sake that are even fairly expensive in japan.

sake may as well be flower-scented 12% vodka and shochu may as well be 25% diluted grain alcohol at this point.
the Japs only mix them with iced water or tea anyway.

My advice honestly, would be to try and get a hold of asian plums and make your own Ume-shu. It takes a while (a year or two) but the process is piss easy and fairly "set n forget". Can make a couple of gallons of the shit for very cheap.

>>14449555
yeah this. it's way easier to find the korean shit (basically the same though), mostly cuz Koreans and Chinese have a tendency to stick to themselves and their own culture more.
Japanese intergrate fairly well and love beer/whisky/wine too much, so they westernize fairly quick overseas.

I'm glad it ended when it did. Hours upon hours of good shit without feeling uninspired or shitty.

Your local Asian market will have Asian booze if you live in an area where they're allowed to carry it. I like that cloudy sweet style they got going.

I just ordered the Brewdog shochu in the UK, has anyone tried it?

I'm also wanting to try sake because I'm a weeb but is it possible to get an ok sake in the UK for a reasonable price? I'd imagine its like Scotch whisky where outside of Scotland/UK, you pay a shitload for a shit product.
