Why are they so good?

I know they’re a bit of a meme, but American whiskey and bourbon always makes me feel sick no matter how much I drink. Japanese stuff on the other hand is never a problem.

Japanese whisky has plenty of problems.
Too many blends, too few age statements, no requirement it actually be made in Japan, hot trash being up priced because of the popularity of the genre, Jim Murray, etc.

There's some treasure there, but it's mostly over priced.

That's cheap, try it.
I looked at what my bottle shop stocks, and the only good Japanese whiskys there (that I've tried) are Tenjaku at $85 and Taketsuru Pure Malt at $125.
The former is just blown the fuck out not good enough at that price point. It needs to get into the 70s to compete against other good world whiskys / 12 year old Speysides.
The latter I'd class against Lagavulin in the $90s. Maybe some finishes / distillery editions at around $100. But at $125 you can get some pretty primo shit.

Asians are just unironically better at everything, full stop.

If you want proof, look at beef. Europeans had 500 years and 80% of the world's landmass, and the best they could come up with was slightly marbled prime.

Japs started eating beef less than a century ago, and were still able to develop Wagyu/Kobe in an overpopulated shithole island smaller than california.

The next 200 years is just going to be this but in overdrive, and suicide rates will skyrocket.

Imagine if the scots tried to make a Canadian whisky. It's light a friendly, but it's complex and doesn't suck shit because it's syrupy trash.

The problems are correct as well. No regulations means you have to do some research on what you're after before you buy it. Prices are high because it's taking off and the supply has fallen so low that they can't put out age statement bottlings anymore. It'll get better over the next few years, but right now it's a bit of a bitch.

The research can be done by the way, there are graphs out there somewhere that show bottlings and distilleries and what's real and what's not.

Two manufacturers in Japan that can produce whiskey on a large scale are Suntory and Nikka.
Both are lacking malt.
Suntory and Nikka, even those with the "pure malt" label, use malt from multiple breweries. Part of it may be imported malt.
I think the main ingredient of cheap whiskey sold in Japan is imported malt.
YAMAZAKI, HAKUSYU, YOICH, and MIYAGIKYKYO are Japanese-made "single malt" bearing the name of the distillery.
Ichiro, which has a small production scale, is expensive.
Ichiro also uses overseas malt by notating it as "world" on some of its products.

The circumstances of minor manufacturers vary.
Imported malts are needed to make whiskey less expensive.
AKKESHI is difficult to obtain and expensive.
NAGAHAMA has divided the brand into "NAGAHAMA" and "AMAHAGAN".
Even minor makers have great whiskey.
But pure Japanese whiskey is expensive.

Nikka's "TSURU" is blended. However, the brand was abolished because many Japanese malts were used.
Suntory's "CHITA" is GRAIN. This is also whiskey.

In Japan, the shortage of Japanese malt has been a serious problem for many years. And the brand is being reorganized.
Your knowledge is great. But it does not justify your prejudice.

100 years have passed since the release of Japanese whiskey.
Japanese whiskey is a little overrated.
For the same price, scotch is generally better.
Part of Japanese whiskey is great. But they are expensive.

Until about 10 years ago, we had a wonderful single cask distilled in Karuizawa. It was a good value.
But those days are gone.
