OIive oil for decades has been touted as the 'healthy' alternative to other types, but is it honestly better?

-- Compared to sunflower oil it cannot be heated as high
-- The taste is definitely acquired
-- you can replace olive oil in most recipes and it tastes the same. Pizza dough with sunflower oil tastes the same as one made with olive oil.
-- very expensive
-- it degrades when exposed to light
-- personally I was dismayed to find out first time trying that it was very bitter and tasted green, like grass or leaves.

That said, I don't hate it, though I think it is extremely overrated. I occasionally make sandwiches topped with olive oil instead of butter. It makes the food more exciting.

In what way do you guys use olive oil? Do you think it they're worth the price? Do they live up to the high expectations?

I mostly just dip bread in the olive oil, or use it for anything cooked in a pan. I basically just use salt, pepper, and olive oil to liven up my home cookings.

>-- The taste is definitely acquired
But you also acquire it the first time you eat it so it works out
>-- you can replace olive oil in most recipes and it tastes the same
If it's dilute enough maybe, otherwise a recipe you would want to have a taste of olive oil won't if you use sunflower oil

I would agree that it doesn't need to be THE oil to use in everything but it's clearly, as it has been known to be for thousands of years, a flavorful oil that has particular use in cooking and dressing compared to other oils

bad bait.

>-- Compared to sunflower oil it cannot be heated as high
You use different oils for different things. Volatile oils aren't meant for deep frying you lardo.
>-- The taste is definitely acquired
True, particularly with a child's palate
>-- you can replace olive oil in most recipes and it tastes the same. Pizza dough with sunflower oil tastes the same as one made with olive oil.
Objectively untrue. Get a better tongue.
>-- very expensive
Only completely valid point. Much like champagne or san marzano tomatoes, the pedigree surrounding certain olive oils is overhyped. It's great oil, but there are plenty of great oils produced elsewhere for much lower prices
>-- it degrades when exposed to light
Do you live out in the Serengeti or something? Are you too poor for a cupboard?
>-- personally I was dismayed to find out first time trying that it was very bitter and tasted green, like grass or leaves.
Same as your first point. Refer to my rebuttal to point #1.

This is a bad thread. Go back to your kind in /sip/ threads

oh, it took me multiple tries. I disliked olive oil greatly at first, thought buying a whole bottle was a mistake.

But I kept obsessively thinking about it, and developed literal cravings. And kept making more and more sandwiches until I eventually got around to liking it.
I rationalized it that maybe I had a nutritional deficiency that olive oil satisfied in some way

>>14406871
>dip bread in the olive oil
is a great tip for beginners btw. Salt it too, it takes the bitterness off a lot so it's even more palatable.

Hate to be the "It needs to be genuine Italian to be good" guy, but if you spend a little bit more money on some quality Olive oil you will taste the difference.
You pay for what you get, some Evo is better for cooking, and some are better for "finishing" or plating. The quality kinds are what you want to have with your caprese salad or your bread. You most certainly cant replace that with any other oil and have the same taste.

I almost never cook with regular olive oil though, usually pure oliva or grapeseed.

Enjoyment is subjective, not being able to detect differences in taste is a genetic defect. I'm sorry you suffer from such a pleasure-draining ailment, anon, but your "opinion" is worthless here because your taste buds are non-functional.

Ok so I live in Canada where the other alternative is usually Canola oil which is chemically treated from poisonous rapeseed. Canola oil is not poisonous but it's heavily bleached. I would easily pay 3x the price to get another oil that's freshly squeezed. Extra virgin olive oil is not really necessary though unless you are rich. It definitely has heavier olive taste but it's not really noticeable in a complex dish.

>> No.14408990

Well that's obviously because sunflower oil has an extremely strong taste. Olive oil does have taste but it's almost neutral unless you buy extra virgin. If you replace olive oil for some other neutral oil, like vegetable oil, in any kind of cooked dish the taste is identical. No one would know the difference.

It's actually superior for high temperature cooking because the antioxidants protect it from oxidation. The taste will change but this is harmless.

Olive oil isn't expensive

>> No.14409317

- Up to 180 it's fine. For commercial use, as long as you keep the temperature below the smoke point EVO in fact lasts longer than sunflower oil because of the antioxidants.
- Relative to how much you need cost of EVO is irrelevant for anything except deep frying.

Currently there is some controversy about carcinogens in high temperature deodorized oils (not just vegetable oil, non artisan lard and tallow too). All the other virgin oils taste as strong or stronger than olive oil and tend to be more expensive too.

I’m from Slovenia, so obviously we’re very close to meds and border Italy, but a liter of quality extra virgin olive oil is like 8€. And that’s high quality. Not mixed with anything else. Why is everyone discussing the price so much? A liter will last me a month for my entire family, and that’s literally nothing.
How much does italian extra virgin olive oil fucking cost in shitholes like canada anyway, that you can’t afford it?
Anyway, I use extra virgin olive oil for everything, except steaks and frying (I fry MAYBE once a year anyway, that shit is disgusting).

>> No.14409388

>>14406829
You fucking retard, both olive oil and seed oils are not meant to be used for frying, these oxidize rapidly and sunflower oil contains a lot of toxic omega 6, where would you get the idea to eat that? All unsaturated oils degrade when exposed to air and light. A plate of fries is comparable to a few dozen cigarettes when it comes to toxic oil heating byproducts. Not only OMEGA 6 IS NOT burnable as calories, it destroys the mitochondria, damages the heart and lingers in cell membranes for years, it's fertilizer for diabetes and cancer.

Whether you like the taste of olive oil is subjective and that decides if it's worth the price. That said, sometimes I use extra virgin olive oil solely as a condiment for white cheese or sprinkle a bit on meat.
