How is Crown Royal compared to American bourbons? I'm either trying that next or Bulleit. The idea of "Canadian whiskey" kind of turns me off but if it's good, I'll try it

>> No.14360757

There's basically two kinds of Canadian whisky, bland inoffensive stuff like Crown Royal which are popular only because they were the only potable alcohol in North America during prohibition, and proper rye whisky which is less popular because not many people like rye.

Bulleit is pure corn juice btw. Very sweet.

Lot40, Caribou Range, the higher end Forty Creeks, all great Canadian whiskies: as a rule try to avoid Canadian whisky that advertises itself as such. It's usually code for "cheap mixer"

For some whiskies it definitely does, yes.
I would never put something like a Laphroaig in a flask. Both because I want to sniff it before I sip it, but also because it just doesn't feel like a flask kind of whisky.
I've never noticed the taste itself being changed by the flask I use. I mostly put fairly cheap and uncomplicated stuff in it since it's not really for sipping and enjoying in the same was as having a glass at home is. Fairly often it ends up in my coffee anyway. Glenfiddich, Tullamore De, Ballantine's, Grants, Jameson... stuff like that. Those tend to go on sale here pretty often and when they do I grab a bottle and use that to have in the flask.
Save the good stuff for when you can really appreciate it.

I love bourbon whiskey and even some Tennessee whiskies (but fuck Jack Daniel's), hell, I'll even enjoy F R O N T I E R whisky like Stranahan's (which is basically Scotch in the Rockies)

Bulliet is in fact not 100% corn. It's something like 70% corn, 25% Rye, and 5% Barley.
I believe their rye is 95% Rye and 5% Barley.

Can confirm about Canadian whisky as well. Basically all of it is candy shit, or tastes like nothing. Damn near everything that's primarily corn (Which is damn near all of it) has a cloying syrupy sweetness that just comes off the wrong way. Gibson 12 is about the most tolerable thing that has it. Lot 40 is good though.
If you can get your hands on Japanese whisky without overpaying for it, the Nikka Coffey Grain is basically just what Canadian whisky should be.

Buffalo Trace is overrated because of Weller and Pappy.
I'm glad you have a variety of whiskies from around the world.
You should balance the bourbons though, and I can't say much from a scotch standpoint. But I don't believe Mitchers and Buffalo Trace balance well if you're going to have bourbon at all.

You should have a bottled in bond, a full proof, a sour mash, a wheated, and then a cheapy. This here is my personal favorite. Give it a try if you never have, just know there's a good reason it isn't sold in anything less than a fifth (to my knowledge).

I love an Ardbeg.
Nikka Coffee malt disappointed me. I like Japanese whisky for sure, but not one of the popular bottles has impressed me.
A'bunadh is great.
Arran is good ish. Cut it if you're looking to cut a few things.
Younger Glendronach has disappointed me. I imagine they're cheaping out on casks compared to other 100% sherry whiskys, or even sherry finished whiskys. Therefore I wouldn't risk the 15.
Four roses is outclassed on this list.
Caol Ila 10 is nice, but it lacks complexity. Perfect in blends, but otherwise not quite up to the Ardbeg/Laphroaig/Lagavulin standard. I don't imagine younger would be better.
Ardmore legacy is the worst peated whisky I've ever had. A real one note dram. But I have been impressed by older independent bottlings. I'd be keen.

>It follows that less alcohol doesn't mean less flavor, which is not true
Less alcohol doesn't mean less flavour. But it is an indication of less money being put into the product, which is correlated with a worse product.
Of any whisky brand I've ever tried Glengoyne has been the most consistent across their own range which I think makes for an excellent case study into the effects of ageing and abv. Anyway their cask strength tastes almost exactly the same as their 40% 10 year old.
It really shook up my previous opinion that cask strength whisky is worth more money. Now my thoughts are more along the lines of: you're buying a volume of flavourful liquid, only look at the volume, flavour, and price.

The current opinion also fits better with all the outlier bottles completely betraying expectations.

In Whisky there's no elaborate reduction process involved during dilution like there is in Cognac.
Whether you're getting the legal minimum of 40% or 46%, is down to the manufacturer's decisions brought about on economic calculations not a question of quality. They're literally trying to figure out with how low of an ABV they can get away with without ruining the product completely.

I know this is a whiskey thread but I don't want to start a new thread for it.

How does brandy compare to whiskey? I was thinking of buying some cognac for the first time, either Martell VS or Remi Martin VSOP. I assume it's like whiskey in that it's a complex liquor that lends well to drinking neat.

>> No.14391684

I have an open bottle of RM VSOP and it's quite fruity, less oak driven. Pleasant enough to drink neat, got it as a present, probably wouldn't buy.
Obviously, grain or malt notes are absent here. I do get grapes, apples, pears and some spice, though.

This is Douglass and Todd a really great whiskey made in Minnesota. Not for beginners to bourbon style whiskey, but to the aficionado that wants to have the oaky flavors punch you in the face, one would be wise to get their hands on a bottle. It's even a mid price-point spirit that tastes like it ought to cost more. Like Buffalo Trace, this distillery puts a lot of craftsmanship into their final bottled product and they don't charge an arm and a leg.
>inb4 Buffalo Trace is overrated
Yeah, I get it, but for What BT costs per bottle you are still getting a pretty good whiskey that is actually affordable to be a daily drinker.

I work in a liquor store and it is difficult to change the minds of most black people to think outside the "henny" box. When they do, they usually go for the Remy Martin and D'Usse, which are at least VSOP. The real yak lovers listen to me and go for Hine VSOP which is the best cognac I sell (working class neighborhood, but not the ghetto).

what you eat along or prior to whiskey consumption has a massive effect on how you perceive taste. carbs and sugar are generally detrimental because they increase saliva production, lemons will amp up the sweetness and lower the alcohol burn, olives in brine are quite good for that, too.

if i plan to get drunk off whiskey i usually just buy a shitty sour mash like jack daniels since i like the harshness of it more, it tastes like crap to start with but the third or fourth shot in i start to get the nice throat tingling feeling.
