Used to go to this burger place that had a tip jar next to the cash register, so you had to go up and place your order, then they would toss your order on a counter right next to the grill and you would have to go pick it up, and refills on drinks cost $0.35. They actually had a tip percentage guideline on the bottom of their receipts. Like I’m supposed to leave a 15% or 20% tip just for you standing there and shouting my number. Absolutely ducking laughable.

My bf pisses me off because he's been a waiter before, and always feels the need to virtue-signal by tipping large amounts. The thing that he does that most aggravates me in this respect is when we we go out to get food (take-out, because of gorona), he'll make a trip to his out-of-the-way bank ATN to withdraw actual cash to leave as tip, even though it's not along the way.

Also, I hate that he always tries to eye what I leave as tip. I guarantee I never leave as much as him, he leaves a ridiculous amount because of "muh solidarity" with waiters/servers. But then he wonders why he's poor.

That said I do tip sometimes. I disagree with the practice but it has a practical benefit for me. When you eat out with someone and you tip, it makes you look good. It's usually not a problem but when a place is busy I'm often sitting with an empty glass trying to choke down food for 10+ minutes. There have been times when I had to get up and go grab the pitcher to refill it myself.

It's so much easier just to go and refill the drink yourself. If you're in a fine-dining restaurant I get it. The wait staff should be well trained and well paid (by the business). With higher margins on more expensive food they can easily afford it. I don't need a personal servant at fucking applebees.

What you don't seem to understand is that it's not about being unable to afford the absolute dollars spent, it's about the value for the money. $50 for a good meal is perfectly justifiable and not a big deal at all, the cooks put work and skill into that meal and the amount I enjoy the meal makes it well worth the price. I literally could not give a fuck about $10 or however much my tip costs.

But waiters are useless, and honestly the detract from the experience of a restaurant. At best they just silently give me refills and don't fuck up my order. At worst it takes them an hour to get me a new drink or they're constantly bothering me when I'm trying to enjoy the food.
I don't need that shit, I would 100% rather get my own refills and just walk to the kitchen to get my food.

I'm being forced to accept a service and pay extra because poor people like you think that having a waiter is an "experience" because its the only time you get to exert power and feel like someone is servicing you.

I don't need that, I'm there for food. The irony is I could just call in a preorder to take out, get to the restaurant and ask the front clerk for my order, then walk it to a table and eat it. And that experience would be 100x faster and easier than dealing with a waiter.

The reason is that w*iters actually earn way more than they deserve due to the decades-long guilt trip about tipping. Ask any of them, they don't want to be paid a fair wage, they want their tips, in cash, so they can get more than they deserve and commit tax fraud.

>only the wait staff profits
I don't know if this is just a my restaurant thing, but the tip money usually gets shared out among the employees. waiter/waitress gets the bulk of it, but a good chunk gets split up between everyone.
either way usually the busboy picks up the tip, throws it in back, it later gets counted up and split by the waitress. if the waitress is being bitchy and not splitting then the cooking staff just accidentally forgets about her order for 30 minutes and the busboy gets busy cleaning the other side's tables.

>But if everyone went to restaurants less often in proportion to the increase in their tips wouldn't that just result in it being a wash for the waiters anyway?

the argument is that the kind of people who pay 50% extra for ubereats or whatever can afford to do that. Tipping 20 or 30 dollars extra really doesnt matter for thier budget

That's a stupid argument because it's possible to afford paying 50% more for ubereats and not be able to afford much more than that.

It's not that everyone should become a doctor or a lawyer, it's that people make the most retarded decisions possible in their lives and still feel entitled to a bunch of shit. There's no reason a retard carrying some plates is worth more in wages than the absolute minimum necessary for keeping a roof over their head, food in their stomach, utilities paid, and MAYBE monthly beer money. These people could have studied a skilled trade if they didn't want to or couldn't go to college and be making a very comfortable living with employment almost always assured (know who dead-sure haven't been out of a job during the lockdown? Plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians), but no; carrying anything heavier than a bottle of wine is a deal-breaker, doing anything blue collar is super not cool and the thought of working even 30 minutes somewhere without air conditioning makes them rather die. They could have become the trash men you talked about, except trash is fucking gross. They could have become artist or athlete who could at least make a living if they're any good at it, except they've got the artistic capabilities of a monkey with a box of crayons and they do the bare minimum to not be fat (sometimes). Nobody says "I want to become a waiter." Being a waiter is for high school and college kids, or senior citizens, to make extra pocket money. If you're a waiter and not one of the aforementioned, don't get me wrong, you deserve a livable wage even if you're a fuckup, but your idea of "livable" is more often than not laughable. It's food and a roof, for one; don't breed.

I sit in an office all day now programming and analyzing seismological data, but when I was a teenager I helped my wetback dad do construction work. My respect for tradespeople is immense. Same for anyone in the arts who make life more than just toil. The respect waiters evoke from me is that which I give absolutely any human being by default. I've yet to meet one who earned more than that.
