I've never had regular 4Roses since the Small Batch is only like $2 more here. It's pretty smooth, but not as smooth as BT. The EW 1782 is extremely smooth. It's not complex at all, but it's a great sipper and great for the price.

I'm cautious of all these new brands that are popping up like weeds nowadays. Whiskey has turned into a hipster meme and a lot of these small brands are just sourcing from major producers like MGP and slapping a snazzy label on it and calling it done. Not saying that some aren't actually working hard toward making a good product, but when you look at the economics of the distilling industry, the upfront investment before you have a sellable product that you can call your own is extremely long. Those first 5-10 yrs are basically gonna be reselling 3rd party products with your own name on it.

I am not going to talk shit about hipsters. They're literally the greatest class of entrepreneur this country has seen in a century.
Sure, they're responsible for a lot of fuckups, but that's what happens when you take the risk of trying to accomplish anything.
As for this bottle in particular, it's pretty meh. I'm only on my first glass. But it's about right for the price.
It's on the spicy side, so it's going to be best for cocktails rather than neat.

>Whiskey has turned into a hipster meme
“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

It's almost as if hipsters sprung up organically in different cities with different influences despite trending in a similar arc.
A Williamsburg hipster is not going to be exactly the same as a Portland or a Seattle hipster, and let's not even get in to the fixie bike crowd.

They could probably use the term Millennial, or Gen Z, or something like that because they are actually trying to indicate an age group. But that isn't exactly right. They also want to indicate an age group that still has a chip on their shoulder of insecurity, and a immature frontal lobe of judgement. There is a young drinker that falls victim to wanting to belong to something new and exciting. They want to identify with something, and are into fashion, trends, and APPEARING to be a certain way. A society that lives on social media, where trends spread like wildfire if they are known to you first and you can appear novel or enlightened.

Insecure people rush to drink what they friends will approve of first. Then, they collect it. It's pokemon cards, hot sauces, tiki shirts, whatever. In the 80s, men collected beer bottles of shit they tried and put them up on the wall of their man cave. Grunge kids in the 90s wore very worn-out clothing and did greasy stuff with their too long hair. At the very same time, other kids were wearing pants on the ground or shorts that went beyond their knees with stupidly expensive sneakers that weren't Vans and weren't brushed off clean each day. So when you talk about Millennials, you have to clarify "hipster" to decribe a subset of the age group, the kind that listened to Metric or The Killers, because that's what their parents played, and gets off on being novel, a bit of a social media whore, and I-found-it-first and it makes me special mentality. Hipster is mostly a scathing pejorative term, not a self-identify term because it'd be an oxymoron to pick on yourself and have self-esteem. You'd be too sensitive.

Mellow corn is good, but unfortunately buying it overseas makes it far more expensive than its worth. Bottles' flavor can change for the worse as the level of whisky in the bottle becomes lower and lower.
A 1/8 full bottle of whisky has a lot of space inside for alcohol to evaporate into and fill. It all wooshes out of the bottle when you open it and that alcohol is then lost. This can negatively affect the flavor of the whisky.
It is recommended to finish almost empty bottles of whisky quickly for this reason.

I know about the oxidation issue; I usually finish a bottle in a week or two to avoid this. Also couldn't be sunlight since I keep all my bottles in a closet. I guess mellow corn just goes bad fast.

I've noticed that the effect of air varies between whiskies, and some whiskies spoil faster and worse. The worst I've had was a bottle of aberlour a'bunahd that I left low for a few weeks. By the time I came back to it the flavor was nothing but ash.

Since this thread seems to have a lot of people who knows their shit about bourbon I feel the need to ask for recommendations.

While I'm not a great drinker by any means and not my main drink to enjoy I do like whisky, mostly scotch. However, I have not tasted bourbon enough to have a reasonable overview on them. The best bourbon I have tasted is Four Roses Small Batch. Liked it very much but maybe it's because I'm not used to it and the novelty kicked in hard.
Given that I'm in Spain and everything is more expensive than in the US, I'm asking for:

- Best bourbon <30€
- Best bourbon between 30-40€ (for instance, Four Roses Small Batch is a little over 30€ here)
- Best bourbon between 40-50€
- Best bourbon >50€

I would rarely consider buying bourbon priced >50€ as I would feel I'm being scammed with the price difference (knowing that is way cheaper in the US) but I can make an exception if it's very well rated here.

Also, please, recommend me some 100% rye whisky as I have never tred it either.

Wild Turkey is the gold standard of midshelf bourbon right now unless you don't give a shit about taste then just buy Beam. Never buy Jack its way overpriced for the swill they put out.

How is Old Forester? Looking for an upgrade from Beam white label.

I'm looking for a low-midshelf bourbon for daily sipping other than Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey 101. I'm a big fan of Woodford Reserve, so I feel like I might like Old Forester since some of it ends up in WR.

you're gonna fight all the time then, jb is a decent mixer but WT101 is excellent especially for it's price range

Whiskey hasn't turned into a "hipster meme" it's just trendy is all and if people being sheep and following trends makes them "hipsters" then boy do I know several fucking hipsters. Beer is the hipster meme because no beer snobs I know can agree on whats a good beer they all have their own microbrew brand that they swear is the best. When it comes to whiskey drinkers you can tell who's serious about what they like and who's just trying to fit in. I.e blantons drinkers. Fact is most Whiskey drinkers are honestly pretty cool and are more than content to drink mid to bottom shelf brands. Anybody trying to push Japanese Whiskey on you is probably a hipster though and scotch and irish whiskey drinkers never talk about their shit unless you actually show interest in that field of whiskey.
