I've never had sushi with raw fish before but want to try it. I love canned fish/pretty much all styles of cooked fish. But I've always been hesitant to eat it raw. I can't imagine liking the slimy texture.

Can any anons that enjoy sushi give me some advice? What are some good "starter" fish I should order? Preferably something not slimy and neutral in taste. People seem to love tuna sushi so I was thinking of trying that. I like salty Mackeral so that was another one I was thinking about. There are a bunch of sushi places near me with tons of different things to order and I'm pretty lost. Thanks in advance anons

Tuna, crab, or salmon. Eel isn't something I'd get the first time.

If the fish is slimy go somewhere else.

Unagi is probably one of the most entry level things to order for someone apprehensive about trying sushi, but it's not raw.

For starters, go to a highly rated sushi place, don’t go to a hole in the wall joint. Also if you’re looking for a real sushi experience, don’t get any roll that has cream cheese in it. I love the naruto roll (cuc, avocado and tuna), it’s rolled in cucumber instead of rice so the fish really stands out. Spicy tuna roll (rice, tuna, avocado and spicy mayo) is a good one for starters too

Like >>14313695 said try the crab (fake crab is just white fish so give it a go) or more specifically check the menus of where you’re going to eat and then decide what you want.

Yeah that's pretty much all I've had sushi wise. Grilled bbq eel and cooked fish sushi. I really hope I like the raw variety because I love fish and want to be able to enjoy it in all its forms

There's nothing slimy abut sushi unless you're eating week-old gas station sushi left out in direct sunlight

This. Unagi one of the best thing Japanese cuisine has to offer.

>>14313723
This is bullshit though, it's like going to a steakhouse but only getting salads and potato. Other than unagi and tamago, Sushi is raw fish on rice. if you don''t like raw fish that's fine but then don't be eating imitation sushi that's cooked and deep fried and covered in corn syrup and shit

The only time when you should be trying obscure hole-in-the-wall sushi places is when you're actually in Japan. This is especially if you want to eat proper sushi for authenticity when you're not in Japan, and if you don't want an infection or possible death.

If you do go to Japan, just go to a fish market and ask anyone about what fishes are best for sashimi, buy the fish, and go to a smaller sushi "bar" (the ones where they have only 6 or so seats) and ask them to prepare it for you. Those, in my opinion, are the best sushis you can get for a reasonably cheaper price.

In terms of what to order, ask the staff. If you don't go to a restaurant where the chef or a wait-staff can advise you on their specialty and/or seasonal dishes, you're probably not in a safe enough place (especially if you're eating raw sushi or sashimi). Also, if it's slimy, it's probably not safe for consumption.

Lastly, sushi is almost always raw. If the meat is in any way cooked, it's almost always a western dish.

TL;DR: don't eat raw fish from random places unless if you're in Japan + ask the chef

It's not really slimy, it should be tender and meaty. I'm personally not a huge fan of sushi or sashimi, it's alright, if you enjoy really fresh food I'd say go for it. Salmon, Tuna, Fatty Tuna are probably my favorites.

But if you're not a big fan of that, feel free to try the rolls, they're definitely more accessible. Though Rolls are the burgers and fries of Japanese food.

This guy is right.

Unagi is good but is an acquired taste. Tuna, salmon, most whitefish and crab are delicious and palatable to someone who has never had raw fish before. Things like octopus, roe, and unagi come later.
