UK here, back bacon is the norm over here, and is superior for sandwiches and chopped up used for cooking.
American bacon, or streaky bacon, is nice cooked and chopped up as a garnish, or used on burgers as a textural layer, but doesn't fit in a stand-alone sandwich or a cooked breakfast in my opinion

Well pork loin is better but I prefer it roasted whole or better yet cooked over ten hours with indirect heat and smoke. I mean you could cure it but it's sort of a waste of the good part of a pig. Since pork belly is the throw away part already and most people don't want to braise uncured belly streaky bacon is the best use. Leave it to the brits to take a better cut, make it worse and still find a way to feel superior about it.
