Fuck your travel and competition cooking shows, I taught people how to cook - JC

Why do so many cooking shows have to be competitions? Is cooking boring to people now?

>> No.14296538

I learned from Alton. Good Eats was honestly the end of cooking shows that actually focused on teaching you how to cook.

I learned from my parents and cook books, as well as the old school shows on PBS like Yan Can Cook and Dishing with Julia Child. Personally, I love Alton and have learned quite a bit from him and agree that his was probably the last true show that taught cooking. Now everything is on the internet though and you can learn some cool shit to cook from anywhere in the world. Some of them may even just be entertaining, but they build confidence and highlight technique.

One of the cook books I own has this quote in it, I always think about it in the kitchen when I try something entirely novel, which is rare these days considering all I have done. It still rings true though:

“The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.” - JC

I do miss her.
