Brought up in our great grandparents house in the south side of our city. Every appliance we had was shit my dad picked up off the side of the road that people were throwing out. We lived off my dad's pension for 10 years after he lost all mobility due to fucked up joints from 30 years of heavy labor and botched double knee replacement surgery at 45 years old.
We lived with a broken refrigerator for like two years, so we mostly lived off dry beans and potatoes.
I got accepted at our states university with a full scholarship, so I worked a full time job while going and sent all the money back home. It was just enough to keep the water and electricity on. I ended up graduating with a double major in physics and computer science.
Ive been looking for jobs recently, but nobody is hiring. I send out dozens of applications every day. I'm back at home now working for 12 an hour eating beans and rice for every meal.

French dinners. My mum would put down a blanket and put small plates of meat, cheeses, veg, fruit and bread. All cut up small. Happened a couple of times a week. She had this old beat up French phrase book and would try to teach you the names of everythinh along with some basic French. She told us this is how the French eat and if we got good enough at speaking French she'd take us on holiday to France. She was going to the supermarket at closing time and asking for the food they were about to throw out. She'd come home and cut the bad bit off and present them all dainty and nice to us. >Any other poverty children? A bologna and cheese slice cut up into squares was a staple meal. Prove how poor you were

Well, that is what most kids cried on demand to get when they rode in the cart in the grocery needing their whaaah Lunchables like they weren't just crackers and basic deli meat in little stacks.

Those lunchables kids were a bit before my time. My own (very good cook) mother once, mind you just once, threw together some kind of snack before going out for some kind of thing teenagers had to do on weeknights (scouts?) dunno. But, this once she cooked bologna in a skillet with BBQ sauce til it curled up and got crispy. When she served it telling some story about her german grandfather making it for her Dad when mom was out of town, as a treat, etc, my older brother interrupted her to talk about it being the shittiest poor people food he'd ever seen. I think he left the table crying. He had about 6 moments that I recall like that, where he was rude or ungrateful. Glimpses into his soul.

My parents pulled his leg one time. Had him going for about 2 weeks, he just wasn't sure what to believe, but they kept up the charade that he was switched at birth, that a lawyer had contacted them, and they acted very worried, and his birth parents were very rich well known family in our city. Everytime we passed the buildings on the highway owned by that family, the topic came up again about is it true? HAHA.

My spouse did that crap. Horrible inlaws with all kinds of weird food rules that ruined really common recipes, from unsauced pastas, to turkey bacon demands, to pulling off breading on all chicken, to only having chili on top of salads, but never in the bowl as a stew. Never an actual italian toppings on pizza night. Never splitting any food at a restaurant. Stupid stuff. I could look forward to having said leftovers a second time, but 100% of the time it was a no-go idea for the spouse.
After tossing too many good leftovers or else having a sort of lazed out dumb takeout idea, I started to just immediately freeze leftovers right out of the casserole or the pan, right into the freezer, and pull that stuff out again only when we'd be in the mood for it again.

Some of the stuff I ate as a poor kid: off brand pasta like no name brand boxed macaroni or off brand pasta shapes with some can of sauce. For school it was the cheapest jam/jelly and the cheapest food-bank looking peanut butter. Thinly spread on stale whole wheat that was reduced price do to age or completely free. On weekends I'd eat a potato sliced up and fried in a frying pan. I'd get a few packets of ketchup stolen from a lunch counter somewhere. No milk no soda no orange juice. On special occasions wed get powdered drink mix like kool aid with 1/3rd the required sugar (at best). Cheap disgusting fish suitable for bait. Often caught by a relative or given to us. Bowls of cheap thai rice. Porridge. Packaged ramen was rare I used to think it was expensive lol.

I grew up in shitty 1 star motels by the highway and in our car a lot, in the car we couldn't keep meat cold or whatever so we used to eat tomato sandwiches. Just bread, sliced tomatoes and when we were lucky my dad would get handfuls of mayo packets from fast food places for them.

one of my white trash friends used to eat spaghetti with ketchup. im not sure if there was anything else in there, I'd assume maybe some hotdogs at best, just noodles and sauce at worst

Jesus Christ. i remember a friend and I bought a bunch of this garbage, some shitty "cheese" and a loaf of the whitest and cheapest bread when we went on an impromptu road trip when we were like 16.
At least we had the foresight to bring an ice chest.

my friend in high school would go grab something off the top of the trash if he saw someone throw away some uneaten food. he was kind of poor, but he was fat, so I dont think his poverty had anything to do with it other than his parents being retarded leading them to be poor and fucking him up mentally

I will never understand how people can not afford food when you can literally just go hunt a deer or two and have food for months.
