I've noticed lots of brands have been doing this for a while. Some of them seemed to have figured out that if they can make people feel good about themselves they'll buy their product, even if it's not healthy or not the best value. Ends up being a bit sad if people are that easily swayed into purchasing something and that they need empowerment to come from buying a certain brand of rice or pancake mix.

A lot of people are just looking to capitalize on the situation for their own benefit though. Seeing similar stuff with indie devs on Steam saying they're pulling their games because Valve won't make an announcement, but their games are bad and they're getting more attention from this stunt than they ever did from their games.
