Do you call them green onions, salad onions spring onions (based) or are you pretentious and call them scallions

That's actually the wrong way around. The ones with the bulb are allium cepa which is the same species as white or yellow onions and the ones without are allium fistulosum. So the bulb one should be referred to as green onion and the other is a welsh onion or spring onion.

If you're reading american home cooking recipes from before 1984, these may be referred to as shallots.
I know it's just wrong, but this may be what they meant by that word.
Green onion, scallion... whatever.

The one on the left is chibbles, the one on the right is green onion.

Scallion seems to be an American term that refers to both species of allium and is mostly referring to their shared culinary uses.

I didn't really realize until reading this but I kinda just call them green onion if they're an ingredient and scallions if they're used as a garnish

I use green onion and scallions pretty much interchangeably. Spring onions have more developed bulbs. I've never heard anyone say salad onions.
