I grew up in Hawaii and thought everyone put soy sauce on rice. I was in SE Africa, which is literally the opposite side of the globe from Hawaii, the first time I realized that this wasn't normal. To be fair, I'd traveled quite a bit, but was also 7, and bumfuck Africa was the first place I ever went to on vacation where I was served plain white rice.

Instead of that, I wrap them in a flat pita bread type thing and then apply a small amount of some flavoursome sauce. I used to, anyway, these days carbs kind of sicken me and I stick to meat.

On-topic, being from Australia I figured we've have more of an export on Kangaroo meat if only for the exotic aspect, but it's pretty much universally shitcanned by everyone. I've recently started cooking with it and I'm finding it a far better substitute for pretty much any beef, whether for stir fries or steaks. It's easier to cook with, easier to get very thick, cheap steaks with, way harder to overcook and the gamey flavour blends very well with stir fry sauces. I especially like how the rarer you cook the steaks, the easier it is to eat; it's almost melt-in-your-mouth quality at the stage of blue cooking. The only thing that's offputting about Kangaroo meat is that you can't sear the sides to seal in moisture like you do with beef, the muscle fibres must be differently structured because it continually weeps large amounts of blood. But that actually doesn't matter because of how much it retains when you cook it.

We were down to like maybe 2 Orange Julius locations, both in mall food courts, until Dairy Queen bought them out. Now every Dairy Queen here (which were already plentiful) is a DQ/OJ, so you can get an Orange Julius damn near anywhere. I rejoice.

>> No.14232732

>>14232684
Hard to describe.
It's like a frothy, slushy, thin (consistency-wise) smoothie. Emphasis on the "smoothie" part - it's mainly fruit juices and puree, blended with ice, coconut powder (oh no did I just give away their secret ingredient?), and sometimes like a dash of vanilla or yogurt or whatever, depending on the flavor. Whatever they are, they're pretty refreshing, and it's easy to get brain freeze drinking it too fast. If you're expecting something more syrupy-sweet, like a milkshake, you might be mildly disappointed.
I like it most for the basic orange flavor. You can't get orange ice cream anywhere here (not talking sorbet), orange milkshakes are a seasonal (and rare at that) thing, and even orange smoothies are uncommon (usually just strawberry-banana or mixed berries), except for Orange Julius, where they do their... regular thing, or you can get a thicker, less watery/frothy version if you just order the smoothie variant of a flavor.
Sometimes DQ doesn't have much in the way of fruity things, so if you're a fag like me it's nice that the OJ options are always there now.

Back when I was living in L.A., Glendale for about a year with my dad and his family while my mom was still working across the country, there was a little corner store/bakery, obviously owned by some Mexicans, and holy fucking shit were they great.
After a day of shit, of being bullied or upset that my mom couldn't just be together with us, dad would take me to that bakery section and let me pick out a dessert. Always freshly made, and they all looked gorgeous. The fruit tarts always made me happy to see them since they were so colorful. They also would make these fresh french bread loaves and sometimes I'd get lucky to get a fresh one so the warmth was still there. Eating an end piece from one of those loaves were godly. Perfect crust, the softness of the bread was over the moon.

They're gone now, like my father, and like most of my dreams. I haven't found french bread that perfect ever again. I'm still trying to find it. If I could make it myself I could but I don't have the counter space to really do it.
