classic manic depressive with self destructive tendencies. when he was able to channel his energies into his passions -- food, travel, people -- it was excellent. he left his 2nd wife and 11 year old daughter for a damaged, narcissistic actress 20 years younger than him. half a year later he offs himself. i think he was spiralling and knew it.

him and PSH are the only celebrity deaths i've ever really felt sad about. i mean i'm not a little baby who cried in the fetal position for a week, but it felt bad knowing i'd never see any content out of either of them again.

i can't say i enjoyed much of his later stuff. the cnn show was just kind of meh and the nbc show he was a judge on was terrible, sucked seeing him have to water himself down that much for big network primetime. but dam, No Reservations was kino, hilarious seeing him in the early days just shitting on his own show and calling out his producers. kitchen confidential was a great book too.

I miss his shows. I never knew him, obviously, but when he died it kind of felt like losing a friend. As my insurance ended when my father was fired from IBM, I couldn't keep paying for therapy as the insurance plan was able to before. I couldn't pay for that kind of expense with the job I had. So as a form of therapy I used his shows to entertain me when I felt good and used them to lift me up when I was depressed.

When he died, I was on the toilet before my morning shower and read it. Took a shower and felt really fucking sad and crushed and I know it doesn't make sense since I never knew him and he didn't know me. As I was leaving the house, my parents had a surprised and sad look ok their faces. As I came home from work my brothers pointed at me and laughed and said that I'd never see his shows again. I'm not joking, that's how shitty they are, and my dad joined in, but my mom didn't.

I know it's so fucking lame that I liked his shows enough that I used it as treatments for my depression but he taught me to keep being interested and to keep learning. I'm more open minded and seek out things to learn each day and if I don't then I'll just try the next day. He helped me change my perspective on the world around me and how I approach it all. All of it also helped me learn not to hold back. I'm not really moving forward but I'm working on it.
No one will read all this but it felt good to put this to words even if it's to you degenerates, because we all are.

Here's how I remember him: one episode of Parts Unknown, he went to, I believe, a somewhat well-known town in Italy. Now, throughout his time on that show, he went a million fuckin places, some popular, many obscure as hell. They always try to find a genuine connection with the people of the towns, you know, talk to the chefs at not just super fancy restaurants but also just people on the streets and such.
Well, this time, they go with a boat owner -- as they often did in seafood-focused areas, since exploring the roots of food is important to the show. But this time, it turned out that the boat owners were a tourist trap -- they were just throwing bait in the ocean and 'catching' it or something, so the 'tourist' would feel special.
And here's the thing: the rest of the episode basically shows how he spiralled into depression for a few days and treated the folks he stayed with like shit. Now, it sucks he had mental health issues (and is morbid and depressing in retrospect), and it was shitty to do that to the folks. Genuinely caring about the show doesn't excuse their treatment.
But here's the thing: they fuckin showed it. No trying to excuse it, no clever cutting, no really overdrawn sitcom apology scene or whatever. They just straight up showed the (intensely uncomfortable) dinner where he talks to a dude who's helping him and his uncomfortable girlfriend, is a shit reviewer, and he gets drunk on wine.
It sounds stupid. And maybe it's not a great eulogy. But that, to me, was what made Parts Unknown special: we saw great food, but we also saw Bourdain -- not a sanitised TV version, but a real dude who was always badass, always cool, and who also had an outright shitty past that would, sometimes, come to the fore.
And that made the show powerful, because I think it took the old fantasy -- travel the world, see the sights, whatever -- and showed us what it *actually looks like*, in a totally authentic way.

He was noticeably depressed in the last season of his show. Everyone on set must have known he was on a downward spiral and needed help and probably a break from all the travelling, which does significantly increase stress and lilelyhood of relapse depression in guys like Bourdain who have suffered from clinical depression in the past. But they chose to ignore it for their own jobs.
