What are you drinking?

I want to get more into bourbon. Tried WT101 and maybe it's because I have nothing really to compare it to but thought it was just ok. Do you guys think it's worth trying other cheap bourbons like EW BiB or Bulleit or BT or are they worse?

That one is in the 30 bucks range for me, along with others like Eagle Rare, Woodford Reserve and Nikka from the Barrel (not sure if this one is bourbon?). I wouldn't mind a recommendation for this range either. The only thing that's making me unsure is all these people going around saying WT101 is the best, so I dunno if I'm getting my moneys value worth if I go for these if they're not really better.

I wouldn't exactly call Bulleit or Buffalo Trace "cheap."

Pic related is the best bottom shelf bourbon. IMO it tastes better than Evan Williams and is slightly cheaper. It's also made by the Buffalo Trace distillery.

You know that there is no price consistency across markets right?
Bulleit has always been one of the cheapest 40% abv whiskies you can buy here. There's a couple of 37% Bourbons in the $4 below that, but that's it.

This is what I have going on now. Been mostly drinking Godfathers with the Laphroaig or Ardbeg. It's hard to say with the niche stuff. It could be they're just shit. I haven't caught him out on anything thus far. That said, he's not doing independent bottlings (probably because he doesn't sell them) and they tend to be better than big brand experiments or finishes.

>Kilkerran 8 Year Cask Strength
>Lagavulin 8 Year
>Arran Sherry Cask Strength
>Smokehead High Voltage
>Cadenhead's Living Cask Campbeltown (if you're in Europe or the U.K.)
Are good deals. Some bottlers like Cadenhead's, Signatory, North Star and Adelphi also bottle a lot of interesting stuff that are either very reasonably priced or very expensive. I use whiskybase to get a better idea about profile and value for money although reviews there are heavily German and Dutch led who love sherry and sulphuric savory flavors so compared to North American or even UK tastes they should be taken with a grain of salt.

What? Most American whiskeys use new charred oak barrels.

And a lot of Scotch is aged in bourbon barrels these days. Pre-used barrels actually add less flavor to it, so the malt and the burned bog flavors come through more.

yeah, stuff like mezcal is unironically better in bianco form since all the vanilla and tannic notes from wood only mask the agave flavor.
i have tasted a locally made spirit from quince and it was really aromatic and complex yet it has only been aged in glass for a year. new make whisky is really bland.

There's tonnes of great whisky under the prefix "Glen."
Speysides are light and fruity. You're confusing power with complexity; Speysides have plenty of complexity. Far more than you'll get in Islays since they don't age as well. And for that matter there's plenty of finished Glen's with power; Glenfarclas 105 comes to mind.
Most scotch isn't peated. Therefore "If you like peat you don't like scotch" is closer to the truth.

Those are two somewhat conflicting statements. Part of why the sommelier profession is horseshit is because what you've eaten/drank before influences what you're tasting. You can't even slip the same beverage into a the same competition twice and get the same result.
