Mother went trekking in the Himalayas when she was in high school on a trip, and they stopped at this little village after a long day of hiking. Village gave them vegetable soup and shit. Classmates started complaining and one of the villagers overheard. Village slaughtered their only bison/yak/animal thing and turned it into soup so the class could eat meat. Mom felt really guilty and carried that with her for the rest of her life. When I was born, both parents decided to just raise me as vegetarian outright because they figured it would be healthier and also for their own moral stance on the issue.


I personally no longer care too much about the moral aspects, obviously meat/dairy industry is fucked but me being a prick about it isn't going to change anything. Plus I love eggs and milk. The taste and concept of putting animal flesh (cooked or otherwise) in my mouth is very off putting, it just feels gross, so that's the main thing preventing me from switching.

Because to japanese people food that looks appetizing is just as important as what it tastes like (other than shit like cheap factory produced roman). Mexican food is practically a polar opposite of the two.

Anyone who is anyone knows that mexican food 99% of the time looks like poop on a plate and usually tastes like shit while japanese food looks fresh and tastes fresh.

When I went to japan I found the food mainly acceptable, but certainly far from mind blowing. A lot of it felt like bland cafeteria style food to be honest. I drank a whole lot of cheap booze and ate a lot of crap from convenience stores.

The biggest issue was basically my aversion to disappointment due to the extreme difference in cost between 'hole in the wall' and 'fancy ass dining'. Some of the best food experiences I had were extremely cheap. Some of the worst extremely expensive. It is almost like the look of the place rather than the food determined price, but then I suppose that is true here if you look at a burger joint vs a steak house.

Best ramen ever drinking shitty beers in a little wooden ramen shop with construction workers while in rained outside for 600 yen? Bowel of weak miso + plain rice and vegetable sticks in a confusing restaurant with table service for 2,200? Bland and exceptionally average weird 'fine dining' where everything came mostly cold for 16,000?

Japanese food is the English food of Asia. Ok on its own but bland as fuck when compared to the cuisine of every other surrounding country.

I live in Japan, it's just normal food. You get used to it. You think it's so amazing because you've never had anything like it.

Sure when I eat at a good restaurant I'm like damn that's good but it's no different from eating at a good steakhouse or a good korean place or even a fucking african curry place.

Weebs just obsess over it because it's new to them. I'm leaving Japan after many years and many experiences from grimy izakaya to 3starred restaurants and I will miss the food. But to act like it's the best cuisine.... nah

Japanese food is the most average food anywhere in the world. It's not good. It's average. It's the most plebs tier average food you can possibly have.
