Does the shape of liquor glasses really have that dramatic of an effect over how your alcohol smells and tastes or is that just something whiskey snobs tell themselves to cope with the fact that they just dropped $20 on a single glass?

That glass in the middle is called a Glencairn and it’s probably the best for getting the “full” experience of the drink, whisky specifically. Exactly, even top tier whisky isn't great to be huffing on all night long. So what do you do, drink one slow ass drink of some coveted bottle and then go get a normal glass for your actual drinking pleasure? It's stupid. if it cups below the nose, you won't smell it as strongly as you taste it. If it's got a wide mouth, or flares out, you will. Some wide-hipped glasses attempt to trap some of the volatile compounds evaporating out, but they're mostly pretty nasty anyway. The rest of it's either taking the ergonomics of drinking into account (accomodating ice, swirling, grip), or giving a visual cue to the flavours that are supposed to be apparent.

It does only for 2 reasons.
Smell/Aroma
and decanting.

I'm not a wine snob nor drink much at all but you do get some diehard snobs swearing by decanters and aerators
I understand the idea of aeration and how decantors can do that, but so can simply pouring.
The ones with sedement catchers are just for sophisticated wine that still has that stuff in it.
I can 100% say that most people that have one have never needed it.

However, with whiskey a glass like the glencairn or even a wine glass can help funnel the smell to your nose.
Taste is 80% smell.
So you do the math, the idea is that the shape of the glass catches the escaping vapours.

A tumbler like the bottom right is ideal for big sips, like you're just sitting enjoying a drink, not necessarily the whiskey. You often see those glasses with ice in them.
Ice cools the whiskey and you don't taste it as much.

barman here.

The differences can be significant, or they can be marginal.

Bowl style glasses difuse the vapour, and so are popular in Japan and China where the smell of alcohol isn't appreciated and hard alcohols are not traditionally chilled

Like wine glasses, whiskey aromas can be condensed to give a more powerful flavour- while this is personal preference I wouldn't see anyone who doesn't drink scotch/ amaretto/ouzo neat wanting them

If you want your drink to stay colder for longer, a very significant difference can be had.
But this would ruin a negroni which really must have a straight walled glass

The other thing to consider is the psychosomatic aspect. Taste and smell are both strongly influenced by things beside those that directly contribute to taste and smell. There was a series of tests done a little while back where people's perception of the taste of a food was measurably changed by changing lighting, music, and what dish the food was served in. Even if you want to argue that the shape of the glass has no actual effect on the way our taste buds and nasal passages are receiving sensory information, I would bet it has a measurable impact on our perception of those things.

i've drank whiskey out of both a glencairn and a standard old-man glass and i smell no discernable difference. if anything the glencairn just concentrates the stench of of alcohol directly into my nose. the most i can say is that i felt like more of an asshole drinking out of a glencairn

I wouldn't buy a sherried scotch like Glendronach if I was going to buy a single expensive bottle to celebrate something. It'd be a bummer to get a sulfured one, and this is always a risk with sherried scotches.
If I'm buying several bottles to celebrate, sure. One bottle? Nah. It'd be a shitty fucking bummer to have the one expensive bottle you blew cash on in celebration to taste like rotten eggs because of a sulfured cask.

Over here in the burger states, we love our Buffalo Trace bourbon. They offer a 10 year old version called Eagle Rare too. I’m a big fan of Stranahan’s whisky and Michters American. There are some hidden gems over here that are quite cheap so they’re easy to overlook. Cult classic Wild Turkey 101 is a great value and don’t sleep on Elijah Craig.

At room temp, it was quite pleasant. Slightly off after taste, but very sweet, with notes of marzipan and no burning. If it weren't for that after taste, I could drink that shit like apple juice! Not as complex and layered as the Islays, but not bad at all! Really surprised for that price.
And then came the ice. Ugh…
Why would you do that? Slightly bitter-ish, other than that flavorless, cold brown liquid that quickly just tasted watered down. I shall never try this again.
Why on earth is whiskey on the rocks even a thing? Or is there a specific whiskey that works with?
