latest bottle I opened was a cheap Bardolino Chiaretto from Aldi, it tasted watered down but I liked its character, so I'm definitely going to buy a more reputable bottle of the same as soon as I find it

as a result of that I also discovered how rosé wine is made, turns out the darker color of red wine comes from the grapes' skin rather than the juice, so if you remove the skins after the fermentation process has begun but before it's ended you get a pink-ish juice, which may be more like a red or like a white depending on when you remove the skin from the must
you probably already knew that but I thought it was interesting so if you didn't know, now you do

apart from the rosé, I haven't been drinking much wine at all during this quarantine, so hopefully I'll go and buy two bottles of the nice Chianti I usually buy, or maybe one of those and one of a Chianti Classico that's recently become available at a local supermarket/store

Not really how it works at that level. CdP is officially high status wine now, there will always be people who will pay a fortune for undrinkable oak bombs just because of the name and there just isn't enough supply to cause a glut that would force producers to rethink their style. The phenomenon you're hoping for happens with high volume AOCs like Chianti

>> No.14141535

I disagree, we're in the age of the sommelier now. They have much more influence over what's consumed in the higher end wine market than critics now, and they tend to favour lighter, more food friendly wine.

While the traditional CdP producers will continue to increase in price and there will still be a core audience for overextracted wines, younger producers will increasingly start making lighter wines as the demand shifts in that direction. At least that's what I think anyway.

O sure, I'm not saying they're not producing good wines in southern rhone. And indeed, vacqueyras is great value for money still (gigondas not so much imo). The better Chateauneufs still rank with the best in the world. I drank a Domaine Solitude 2015 which was marvelous.
But still, alcohol percentages get higher & higher the hotter it gets, at the expense of drinkability, and a hot place like southern rhone will obviously suffer from it.

Probably the next big thing will be red loire, if the french will actually export it, and not keep most of it for themselves.

Last ones i drank was Frank cornelissen, susucaru 2018. That one is crazy. It’s a juicy Nerello mascalese and Malvasia blend with lots of red berries, mostly strawberries, smoke, minerals, grapefruit and pepper.
The other one i drank was Philip Lardot, Der hirt 2017. A Riesling from Mosel, very classical, a lot of malolactic flavour. This was a bit further in so my memory fails me on other taste. Still a good one.

I don't know what you mean by that. Obviously not a lot of smoke bombs out there. Sometimes you can get an estate wine from a vineyard that was near a wildfire and if you do an A/B test against a year with no wildfire you can catch a hint of smoke but if it's too obvious it will be treated as a defect, the grapes will be destroyed or sold off to someone less interested in terroir, who will blast it through processes to remove the smoke and it turns into something like Tang or High C or Capri Sun, only vaguely tasting like an actual grape at all.

If you want something with mass appeal, that affirms your masculinity and ruggedness? Try "The Prisoner" or if you've got less dough to throw around, Apothic Red which is basically The Prisoner for poor people.

Went to Italy last year, and since I was a complete newbie at drinking wine we decided to go to a local vineyard to try some of their wines. I tried three different types of red wine, all of them contained Sangiovese. Pic related tasted best to me, as opposed to the others it was a pure Sangiovese instead of a blend with Merlot (?).
Bottles of Era are a bit pricey at home though. What kinds of red wine should I be looking for to get a similar taste?

Not even meming, trolling, that was the vineyard that was about 500m away from where we stayed. The brand is a total meme, sure, but I liked the wine and I'd love to find something similar here that doesn't cost 15 EUR for a bottle when I can have a sixpack of good beer for that price.

As far as I know there is very little wine production in the Netherlands, and I am positive there's no Sangiovese. Then again, I am still a wine noob, I just know that I like one particular wine and that similar wines are about 15 EUR at the local store. Fancy beers are about the same price for six of them and my taste in those is varied so I can be kinda adventurous in my selection there. I just have no idea what kinds of wines I like, how to find them, except that I apparently like red and that one specifically.

I've got the Memoro Rosso from Piccini. Very good stuff. It's a mix of different grapes including merlot, sangiovese, primitivo and nero d'avola from different regions in Italy.

How fucking rich are you people that you can go out and buy multiple bottles of wine at once? Lets say a bottle is between $12-$22... And you have maximium 2 days to drink it. It is by far the mosy expensive alchohol. Whenever I buy a bottle of wine I feel like I am spending so much money . The taste is good, i love wine, but compared to beer or liquor I can't often buy the stuff I like, so I rarely drink it. And yes, I'm poor, so you don't need to point it out. I cant wait until the day I have enough disposable income to just go and buy 5 bottles of wine at a time/in a week/in a month.

I have a question that doesn't deserve it's own thread and thought I would ask here. I'm a fag that doesn't drink and only uses wine for cooking. Does the quality of wine have any tangible impact in the flavor profile or quality of whatever you are cooking with it? Is it worthwhile to spend extra money on a wine to be just used for cooking or should I just keep using shitty wines from the grocery store? Beef stews and pan sauces come to mind.

If the wines you're using produce a good tasting dish that lived up to your expectations then there's no reason to upgrade. Within reason it doesn't matter but some extremely cheap wines with a lot of adjuncts will make the final dish taste bad.

If you're doing a dish where you're dumping a whole bottle into the pot, like with some stews, you'll actually notice different grapes, but if it's just a splash in a pan, then as long as it's more or less the right color you're good.

Look for Sangiovese from the following regions: Chianti, Toscana (Tuscany), Marche and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (not to be confused with other Montepulciano wines which are made from a different grape).

Those are some of the more affordable Sangiovese appellations (regions).

Also try out Tempranillo, which is a somewhat similar grape from Spain.

Really wish I could try some good wine from the States. When I was over there I squandered my opportunity because I mostly went to fashionable wine bars and it's clear that American wine isn't fashionable.

I know that a lot of Californian wine is quite expensive but I'm sure there's some great value wine lurking away from the Pacific coast.

Also find it really lame that California wineries use French naming conventions such as 'clos' or 'château'. I guess it's fine if they have a French background but it overall seems tacky.

Must have been a while back because there's nothing a dirty hipster loves more than ordering a california chardonnay or pinot noir in order to start a conversation about how "it's not what you think!" and "this ain't your dad's california wine".

Some of the hippest wine bars in brooklyn specialize in california wine now.

I went to wine bars in Chicago and LA and they had mostly European wine lists. I did go to this one bar that was in a hotel complex that was not at all fashionable which had a better balance.

I went to some wine stores too and picked up a light Californian red in LA, not exactly the kind of wine I'm interested in drinking anymore, but they had a good selection of local wines.

California wine still reigns in california even LA, so a fashionable hotel is going to go with whatever runs against the grain locally. On the east coast it's the reverse, the hipsters think california is amazeballs and the boombooms only drink euro wine except drunk bridesmaids who only drink long island wines. Everyone (except hipsters) thinks california wine is gross.

Shitcago is a crapshoot, any wine is an alien concept there because it's the midwest.

Yeah I didn't drink wine when I was in Boston (beer scene is much better), so I can't comment on that.
