I want to try my hand at making red beans and rice, but absolutely nobody in town has andouille in stock. I bought grocery store brand "fresh andouille", but I've read that there's no such thing because it's smoked by definition. What the hell did I buy? Should I try using it anyway?

I guess you're right. No sense in wasting meat because it's not by the book. Worst case scenario it sucks dick and I pull something out of the freezer.

Still, the question on my mind is as to what this is if it can't be andouille. Is it seasoned as though it is but just not smoked?

The proper poor way is to use any smoked sausage you can get a hold of. That is a salt of the earth food right there, the only wrong way to make it is to get too fancy.
