It's just on scotch I believe. I'd say about half the bottles I see in the scotch aisle have increased a bit in price, some dramatically others just a bit. Lagavulin's have each gone up about $10 I think. Springbank 10 went from $55 to $90 which is the most dramatic increase I've seen. Most Ardbegs, Bruichladdich and Laphroaig I think stayed the same but I think they'll all go up once they have to re-stock.

It's very good. I'm one of the guys who recommended the eurofriend get it. I've had mine open for about 3 months and it's a world better/more approachable than when I first opened it. Lots of flavor in the burnt sugar/coconut ballpark, but the alcohol has calmed down considerably. It reminds me of Stagg Jr in several ways.

Excellent, on the creamy side, finishes slightly herbal and fruity. Probably one of my favorite rums of all time. It's not astringent like a lot of older rums and the oak tannins are perfectly integrated with the larger profile.

>43% is less than standard for a good single malt, which is 46%.
The standard is 40% and a drink isn't better for being higher abv unless you actually water it down.

I think Glengoyne is a great case study. They have a NAS cask strength bottle and a 10 year old at 40% that taste pretty much the same.
But of course you're charged a lot more for the cask strength bottle. Same flavour, bigger price.
Water it down and you have 1.5 bottles of 40% NAS Glengoyne, which nobody wants.

Stop masturbating over your organic, cask strength, exclusively sherry matured, non chill filtered, uncoloured, hand crafted, locally sourced barely, wild strain yeast, eXtra Old, single malt checklist and actually drink what's in the bottle.

The legal bare minimum is 40%. As a show of good will/not cutting corners/ not being a mass-produced item, most distilleries will proof up to 43-46%, and the actual good ones will proof even higher. I like high proof scotch and I feel slighted when my scotch taste like water.

Someone explain, scientifically, to a retard (me), how there can be such variation in quality of liquor, leading to price differences between $20 and $100 for a bottle.

I can understand wine where the conditions and locations of where the grapes are grown lead to better qualities in the wine, but how does liquor work? Isn't it just fermented grains aged in barrels? Are the grains really that different? Are the barrels that different? Are the production procedures so different? What exactly makes the differences?

>> No.14045781

>>14045616
>Explain
Look up the stuff yourself so you can stop being a retard. Here is some guidance for what to read about.

>Just fermented grains
Man, you are retarded.
Why are beers so different if they're just fermented grains?
On actual distillation:
Distillation can be quite involved, read up on what the process of alcohol distillation actually is. Examples include the way the still is heated, boiling temperatures of congeners.
There are different types of stills. There are variations in design within those types. An interesting topic is geometry oddities of specific stills, the dents and bumps.
Barrels - Examples of intrinsic variations: oak species, size, shape. Examples of external variations: previous filling, storage conditions such as temperature fluctuation, air composition.
Finally there's the person at the end of all this that blends it all together. Single Cask has less involvement for that last point of course, but those just show the massive variations in the same warehouse due to aforementioned variations.

Price differences are another story.

>> No.14045801

>>14045616
variation 1: malts
single malt scotches are all 100% barley, but the source and preparation of the barley have a large impact on the flavor. Whether or not to roast them, how early/late it's harvested, local climate, local soil
variation 2: distillation
the size and shape of the still influence the interaction of the distillate. Shorter stills have less interaction, longer stills have more. The master distiller is in charge of finding the hearts of the spirit and discarding the heads and tails, so there's a little bit of finesse involved in getting a pure expression of the spirit
variation 3: cooperage
all barrels are different, and just like there are good and bad wineries, there are good and bad coopers. Different forms of oak, different levels of toast, different whiskeys aged in the freshly-charred wood for different amounts of time. Compound this one a second time because most scotches are also finished in a second or third (or several) barrel used to age something else, such as sherry or port, for an additional dimension of flavor.
variation 4: aging
the whisky naturally reduces in volume over time, though humidity and heat levels can mean more water or more alcohol evaporate. The air itself influences the whisky--many coastal whiskys are known for being briny, and indeed this is a result of the ocean.

tl;dr, there's a lot of craft that goes into it, and a lot of choices to be made to craft a good end-product.

>> No.14045805

>>14045616
Aging can be longer or done in better barrels/better conditions. The quality of the grains/fruits/sugarcane/molasses is made from used to make the alcohol can be better. They can also dilute it less before bottling or not at all. Some distillers are great and will offer their booze not watered down, colored and aged properly for a fair price, others (like Whyte & Mackay) will water and color their shit and pass it off as high quality booze.

I just can't believe that the conditions of the distilling and aging processes can be so different that it accounts for such a dramatic quality and price difference, and that the different distillers can't easily accomodate for it.

The difference in quality variance between wine grapes and barley is also huge. "Good" and "bad" barley isn't a thing, but grapes have a lot of qualities that are easily apparent

Back when I was still drinking a lot of scotch, I was still in transition from childhood to adulthood and hadn't realized how BORING whisky is in general, I got a bottle of bowmore cask something, and yeah it was horrible. Thinking back, I think that was the breaking point. I realized it was all just shitty joke novelty wood flavors and artificial smoke added to an ultimately dull beverage, the same tired variations, you just can't do much with grains.

In essence, scotch drinkers are like neckbeards who think putting different brands of hot sauce on their slop is somehow interesting rather than depressing.

I will say though that bowmore makes an excellent cocktail ingredient because the fake adjunct flavors stand out even over ice and mixed with other stuff. If you're into cocktails still.

Wines and brandies. Grains are trash. When you think about it, the same is true of food. Man had to beat grains into submission with science. Is that something that your body really wants to eat? Of course not. Fundamentally we are indolent primates, we want to lazily gather almost-rotten fruit from the forest floor, eat that while sitting on a tree branch, get drunk, and fall asleep. Grain based food and beverages are punishment tools for hardship times. I'll do my suffering in the weight room. Eating and drinking is for pleasure.
