Honestly, it's not the best, but my go to is Jim Beam White. To me it tastes like banana pudding (banana and vanilla), salted peanuts, oak and caramel corn.

It's not complex or strong, but it's pretty easy drinking for how cheap it is. Really enjoy it for the price.

It's just on scotch I believe. I'd say about half the bottles I see in the scotch aisle have increased a bit in price, some dramatically others just a bit. Lagavulin's have each gone up about $10 I think. Springbank 10 went from $55 to $90 which is the most dramatic increase I've seen. There's plenty of no age statement scotch that's good, Bruichladdich and Ardbeg come to mind. Do I prefer aged scotch? Yeah for the most part but I'm not gonna dismiss NAS bottlings especially if theirs a lot of good reviews for it. For a blended malt Monkey Shoulder is pretty solid and only costs about $30. I also don't think Glenmorangie 10 is that great, their Quinta Ruban is good though.

The legal bare minimum is 40%. As a show of good will/not cutting corners/ not being a mass-produced item, most distilleries will proof up to 43-46%, and the actual good ones will proof even higher. I like high proof scotch and I feel slighted when my scotch taste like water.

I can understand wine where the conditions and locations of where the grapes are grown lead to better qualities in the wine, but how does liquor work? Isn't it just fermented grains aged in barrels? Are the grains really that different? Are the barrels that different? Are the production procedures so different? What exactly makes the differences?

Distillation can be quite involved, read up on what the process of alcohol distillation actually is. Examples include the way the still is heated, boiling temperatures of congeners.
There are different types of stills. There are variations in design within those types. An interesting topic is geometry oddities of specific stills, the dents and bumps.
Barrels - Examples of intrinsic variations: oak species, size, shape. Examples of external variations: previous filling, storage conditions such as temperature fluctuation, air composition.
Finally there's the person at the end of all this that blends it all together. Single Cask has less involvement for that last point of course, but those just show the massive variations in the same warehouse due to aforementioned variations.

Price differences are another story.

the whisky naturally reduces in volume over time, though humidity and heat levels can mean more water or more alcohol evaporate. The air itself influences the whisky--many coastal whiskys are known for being briny, and indeed this is a result of the ocean.

tl;dr, there's a lot of craft that goes into it, and a lot of choices to be made to craft a good end-product.

Aging can be longer or done in better barrels/better conditions. The quality of the grains/fruits/sugarcane/molasses is made from used to make the alcohol can be better. They can also dilute it less before bottling or not at all. Standard Bowmore yes. But cask strength Bowmore is still great. Tempest, Laimrig and Devil's Casks are all great drams and the new Vault Edition in sherry was pretty good too and thats not even getting into the single casks and indie bottlings. The only time Bowmore was god awful was in the 80s when they moved to stainless steel washbacks and someone fucked up cleaning them so all the production turned into French where perfume.

At the risk of catching endless shit for both drinking what some might deem nigger tier alcohol and mixing drinks this stuff is pretty good either on it's own or as a rum and coke. Not much more you could ask for out of a forty buck bottle of rum.
