hypothyroidism only lets you gain water and salt weight and that usually account for 10 pounds. Hyperthyroidism messes with you your hunger levels, meaning it will be harder to keep your amounts in control, but it actually usually increases your metabolic rate so you would still need to eat more to gain weight.

I have hyperthyroidism and before it got diagnosed I was losing a ton of weight despite eating probably 3k calories a day. Started treating it and pretty much instantly started ballooning back up to my weight before developing thyroid issues. You're right that there's a canceling out effect with hyperthyroidism with increased appetite, but it will vary for everyone. If going from hyperthyroidism to presumably normal thyroid levels can cause the weight gain I've seen, then I have little doubt that hypothyroidism can cause similar weight gain.

Reminder that if you are sedentary all day, it is very likely you aren't burning more than 1000 calories a day, so you are just eating at maintenance.

Exercise is 50% of losing weight, diet is the other 50%.

>If going from hyperthyroidism to presumably normal thyroid levels can cause the weight gain I've seen.
That is because of the maintained increased appetite as well as the decrease in the "abnormally" fast metabolic rate hypothyroidism brings. Hypothyroidism is another disease entirely and you cant treat it as "just the opposite of hyperthyroidism".
While you do have a metabolic slow down on hypothyroidism the weight gain is less severe thanks to the non increased appetite.
But even so the metabolic rate doesn't vary outside of "normal" human range, so while you will gain wight if you eat the same, it's not as if food magically makes you fat.

The "passive" 2000 calorie burned a day is a meme. That number was formulated when people had physically demanding jobs they worked for 10 hours a day. If you lay in bed all day your body will burn less than 1000 calories a day.

the reason this advice is cited so often is because it generally works for people who are tracking calories and also being sensible about what they're eating. of course the body's actual processes are much more complex than something that can be reduced to a single 4 word phrase
