I've had that and it's really good. I ate it at one of the places in Iceland where they make it. It has a strong ammonia smell, which is not piss. But the ammonia comes from fermenting a shark that has a very high concentration of urea in its flesh (which does smell of piss) until the urea turns into ammonia. That's what makes it edible.

If you like really strong cheese that has that same smell of ammonia you would probably like hakarl.

Doesn't taste like cooked shark, it's more like a mix of Tuna sashimi and ammonia.

>>14012127
I think ammonia is less toxic than urea. The guy at the store said you should only eat 100g at a time.

Me too, it's on my bucket list. I want a meal with a nice, rustic bread, casu marzu and a glass of robust red wine.

You know, you don't eat it for the maggots, they're just sort of there, and I bet they don't taste like much. The cheese is the product. And if you're a wimp like me, you can probably mash it with a fork or something until it stops wriggling, or just get you a chunk that's mostly maggot-free but still has that strong flavor that I'm sure casu marzu has.

>> No.14013445

>>14013121
The maggots actually jump around man
They sell you the cheese in plastic bags and you can hear the ticking sound of worms jumping against the plastic

Wikipedia: According to some food scientists, it is possible for the larvae to survive the stomach acid and remain in the intestine, leading to a condition called pseudomyiasis. There have been documented cases of pseudomyiasis with P. casei

Balut. Flavor isn't bad, but it's just about the worst thing to look at ever and depending on the maturity of the egg the texture can be horrific.

this, i had a flip gf for a while who made me try it with her family when we visited them in canada. the one they gave me was pretty much just a really strong eggy flavor with a kind of gooey mouthfeel, but the ones they were eating were nearly whole baby ducks and you could hear the soft little bones crunching.

No, I don't eat maggots unless there is a famine on.
This is the kind of shit that got us into the situation we're in.

That is not carrion that's a method to chemically process and preserve the fish.
>>14012084
as you mention, opening and airing a rind of cheese often releases the ammonia, and tbqf some cheese is good with ammonia. I have no idea how ammonia-y hakarl is but I'd eat it, it's not carrion.

Don't eat bats, carrion, maggots, pangolins, dogs, none of that shit.

Raw fish properly prepared? Oh hell yeah.
Blue cheese? For sure.
Saurkraut? Yup.
Maggots? Fuck no.
