Not being able to get food shows that you've failed at life. Even if you're in extreme poverty there's systems in place to just give you food and you'd be able to afford McDs with the money you can get from begging.

I remember back when I had twitter the public defender's office had a twitter account and they'd post outrageous stuff brought by the DA, one of them involved a single mom who spent the night in jail for stealing a loaf of bread and the DA wanted to push for the maximum punishment allowed (whatever that was). Childhood malnutrition has lifetime repercussions, if a kid doesn't get adequate food they'll have like a 10 point drop in IQ and they go from a potential middle class person to a potential career criminal. It's almost never ethical or acceptable even when it's something as cliche as stealing a loaf of bread since people who do that, at least in the Free West where I live, have not exhausted all ethical possibilities first.
If someone knocks on my door and says her child is starving I will give her a sangewedge or some leftovers or whatever. I don't want her stealing from me, but I'm not made of stone either.
I don't personally need someone to mow my lawn or paint a fence or vacuum the house, but I bet if she went door to door and offered such services she'd find someone who'd give her a few bucks for doing chores like that. Certainly enough to buy a loaf of bread.
Hell, even though I have plenty of money I'll sometimes knock on a door and offer to pick apples for someone if I get to keep some of them if I happen to see a tree full of fruit that nobody can apparently be bothered picking. I just don't like waste.
I consider both of those options more ethical and dignified than theft.

Of course, most food theft is not a loaf of bread. It's expensive cuts of meat either for personal luxury or for resale for drug money.
