why are lemons so acidic? i think lemons would make a great snack otherwise

Woah
Why haven't we bred sweet lemons yet? Is it possible? Do they already exist somewhere?

Fun fact: Sailors and Pirates used to suffer Scurvy and found out later that a simple lemon or lime in their diets while at sea prevented it. Vitamin C wasn't something they knew about back then.

If you add thin slices to water you get lemon water for a whole day and at the end of the day the lemon will have diluted in acidity enough to eat. Very good.

>The fruit has a similar appearance to limes, but yellows as it ripens. The fruit is segmented, and can be eaten readily; its low-acid content gives it a sweet taste similar to the orange, but with a flavour not unlike a mild lemon.

Oh shit son, need one of these

Pussies. You need to develop a tolerance to the citric acid. I can down an entire lemon in 10 seconds because I’ve been eating lemon slices most of my life. So fucking good, but the first time you try it’s gonna sting. But as you eat more your taste buds become more exquisite and you can appreciate whole lemons.

And, origin of the term "limey" was born.

Meyer lemons are moderately sweet when ripe, but they're used for their tartness.
I grow some calamondins on the tree in my yard, and they as sour as key limes, however, the peelable, tangerine-line peel, has no white pith, just the good orange part, and rather than bitterness, they're ridiculously sweet. You can chew the peel and detect sugary goodness, and when eaten together, there's a balance that needs little sugar.
I use calamondins for key lime pie, lemon bars and cakes, lime-ade, and for marinating seafood. They will grow in every climate in the houses in a potted plant, if you wish to try them! They're ornamental and appear to be a bonsai tangerine tree when in the pot.

Plants have natural defense systems, whether it's their molecular composition, a mating tactic, or just a natural process that all serve a fight or flight response, and since plants can't necessarily take flight, they fight.
