HP 12 is now barely above JW black, and I think the 12 yr quinta ruban is better than the 14, although maybe I got a bunk bottle
otherwise those are solid building blocks to branch off from

It's incredibly light and malty, profile has honey and fruit, but almost no smoke/wood/spice. Back in the day, it was inverted, sweet spice, oak, and medium fruit, with a honey finish. Solidly medium-bodied.

The new one is just so bland. Only HP I drink these days is cask strength if I can get my hands on it, but shit I saw a 14yr CS at total wine for 250 bucks. It's just silly.

i've been trying to get into rums so that's why i bought zacapa, i'll try it just to compare it to mount gay (which delighted me, i had no idea rums can be that deep in flavor). i also liked nikka, this is the second bottle i've bought because i drank the first one, i think it's very user friendly and it will always be my first choice to offer to someone who is only starting to drink whisky. have you tried taketsuru by any chance? how does it compare to WFTB? i know you said they are shit, but i am only a beginner in this world. try to see it from my perspective.

I think I'll get a Springbank. Seems pricey for a 10 year old but heard a lot of positive reviews.

Rum is great if you like sweet flavours. Lots of whisky drinkers think scotch is the be all and end all. But there is so much variety out there with rum, at a very reasonable price that it doesnt make sense to ignore it. If you are in to spiced rum, which is sweeter than non spiced, take a look at Rumbullion - its excellent.

>>13930673

>i've been trying to get into rums so that's why i bought zacapa..
rums are absolutely great, but here's some info you must know. there are different types of rums. three styles, to be clear. spanish, french and british (england rum). if you like properly aged ones (if it stated 12 yo, then the youngest spirit is actually 12 yo; and zacapa's made by faggot solera, this means if it's stated 23 yo, it's the oldest spirit in it, most likely a few drops), and if you like copper pot stills, dry rums, the england one is your choise. Mount Gay XO is +- the one, so looks like you like this patrician-tier style. Try Appleton Estate 12 and older, try RL Seals, try any of NAVY rums, pretty much EVERYTHING of Foursquare's and Caddenhead's rums. All in all, if you're a scotch drinker, this style is made for you. And as a scotch drinker myself I can 100% confirm it.

Also this site may help you

what style of rum would you put zacapa into?

i absolutely love mount gay xo, that apricot aftertaste absolutely blew my mind, i had no idea such depth was possible. i also tried smith and cross 57% and while i can see why people like it, it didn't do anything for me. it was too strong for my taste and it reminded me about that regular store bought rum my grandma used to bake desserts too much.

what do you think of scotch finished in rum casks? i've never tried any of those, are they worth it?

I think so definitely. Being wheated it has that easy drinkability but the strength give it just enough punch and complexity to enjoy neat. My usual go to sipper is Eagle Rare though and that's less expensive. Between that and Four Roses Single Barrel they're still the best bang for buck bourbons around for under 50.

>what style of rum would you put zacapa into?
100% spanish style. everything with solera is. those are also frequently and insanely sweet, almost everytime with crazy amount of artificial sugar added.
>i absolutely love mount gay xo
solid, really good rum I 100% agree with that. it's made in barbados, and all former british colonies are +- making england style or rums (proper age, if stated, and mostly coper pot stills). and Im not the bong myself, I just like scotch and find this style the closed to my scotch oriented taste. and the only downside on Mount Gay XO is the ABV. 40 is too low, it have to be at least 43 (and better 46%).
>what do you think of scotch finished in rum casks?
fantastic ones. and luckily I think we'll see moe and more of these single malts because of growing rum production industry. but you can grab any of those rum finished scotches and you won't be disappointed mate. Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14yo is probably the easiest to find and be introduced into such lovely scotches.

>> No.13931429

>>13931247
Zacapa is a dark rum. Spiced rum has additional spices added and is typically sweeter than dark rum. Spiced rum is probably more comparable to a lot of liqueurs although it is still 40%+.

Personally I dont find Zacapa that sweet. Obviously if you compare it to whisky it's a much sweeter drink, but for me it isn't too sweet.

Guess it comes down to personal taste. I haven't had rum cask whisky, but I do prefer the heavily sherried whiskies which tend to be slightly sweeter than standard whisky.

no, I haven't. but from my expirience I'd recommend you to rather look for properly aged spirits. all those XOs are mostly good, but not as good. If you live in UK you're lucky to get your hands on some cheaper but infenintely better ones (think of Dorley's 12 and 14 yo for example). but if you want Mount Gay the Triple Cask I don't think you'll face a huge difference compare to regular XO.
