Actual american here and I can confirm, the bread we can buy in your average store is pretty much toast, very sweet, even the presumably "healthy" options contain unnecessarily high sugar.
Its rare to find actual bread here, and then its sold at a premium because its an artisinal loaf. So what I do is simply bake my own.
