I've had a billion bottles of Glenfarclas and never had a sulfured one. Ralfy has had the same experience, and he says they hand-inspect their sherry casks.
But yeah, it's technically a possibility with any sherried whisky or wine barrel-finished whisky.
Glenmorangie seems to have a high rate of sulfured bottles from what I've read.

>Interested how it compares to more traditional Islay stuff.
OK, I just had my first dram of pic related. It doesn't taste like an Islay at all, despite the base spirit being 12-18 month old Islay whisky. Zero to little iodine, vegetal or medicinal notes.
It's way fucking smokier than even Ardbeg. Nose is pure smoke and STRONG. Smells like liquid smoke.
Flavor is BBQ meat. Super smoky, savory and rich. There's a good amount of oak in the background which isn't tannic/astringent but the smoke and savoriness are really, really up front and in your face. The peat and the charred wood synergize incredibly well here.
This is by far, and it's not even close, the most flavorful whisky I have ever tasted as well as the most masculine tasting whisky I have ever tasted. I like it better than Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin 16 or Ardbeg 10. I like it about equally as much as Ardbeg Corryvreckan, albeit in a completely different way. Again, it tastes nothing like an Islay. It's normally $50 and it's absolutely fucking incredible for that price. This is a must have for any peat-head.
The source of the base spirit is a secret. If I had to guess, I'd guess it's Lagavulin, based on flavor. It tastes closer to Lagavulin than Laphroaig or Ardbeg, yet tastes nothing like Lagavulin.
I will purchase this again.

I agree about diminishing returns at that price point with Islay whisky. Given the quality of something like Ardbeg Uigeadail, I dont think its worth spending much more money on a bottle than that costs.

Obviously its a personal preference, but i think anything up to £130-£150 there are still decent increases in quality to be found. I like sherry aged whisky but I seem to find that if its young, I dont like it so much. Id much rather have 1 bottle of a 21 year Glendronach than 2 or 3 bottles of younger Glenmorangie.

Most whiskies roundly described as "balanced," in my experience, lack character or intense flavors. Intense flavors and strong characters don't often exist when too many flavors are all balancing each other out. I like whiskies with character and intense flavors. For example, I prefer Corryvreckan's brutish approach to peat to Uigeadail's peat/sherry balance. Your mileage may vary.

You only need two flavours to balance. Ardbeg 10 balances smokiness with sweetness.
Perhaps this is more apparent in wine, where balance is less fine tuned and varies with bottled age. Too acidic or too tannic are easily visible as gaping flaws.
But is intensity, balance and complexity possible? I think you have to pick two.

Make up your mind. Is it balanced or are there only two big notes?

Glendronach 15 is a lot better, yeah, but I think A'bunadh is pretty well-rounded for a sherry bomb. A lot of other sherry bomb scotches, no matter how well they're made, just end up tasting so much like brandy that they feel less balanced to me. You just taste the raisin, the coffee, the nuts, and it's kind of too much. For example: Tamdhu batch strength. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I would have to be in the mood specifically for that kind of scotch to want to drink it, whereas I feel that A'Bunadh is like the near-midway point between a heavy, rich sherry bomb and a cirtus-y "normal" unpeated scotch that I think somebody could drink even when they're not in the mood for an overwhelmingly rich plum pudding type dram

Glencairn over lowball obviously, but I don't think glencairns are the best nosing glass. Copitas are easier to drink out of and have a similar if not better effect.

I blacked out and woke up later in the ambulance. From there I remember thinking the paramedic was cute. Then I felt like throwing up and he gave me a bag. I dry heaved a lot then blacked out again. I woke up again as they were wheeling me through the hospital. Another blackout. I gained consciousness for good once I was in the hospital bed. I think the entire ordeal took two hours from my seizure to waking up in the bed. I do wish I was conscious, because now I'm not afraid of them. To me having a seizure is just feeling off, then waking up sore some time later.

typically higher proof as well, for a non-bottom-shelf bourbon, 45-50% is standard, whereas 43-46% is more the course for scotch. There are obviously exceptions, but this is what I've noticed.

Hp12 is boring because it's cheaply produced not because it's a beginner scotch.

Bowmore is a perfect cocktail whisky because it has all the expected elements of a scotch, smokiness and fruity sweetness without either dominating a cocktail. It's a great all-rounder for cocktails unless you want to switch to a blend but that's not ideal for your backbar.

Bunnahabhain whiskies are mostly oaked which makes them great for American tourists and not much else.

OK, it came today. It's really good. Between Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavulin, it's the most like Laphroaig. It's somewhat similar to Laphroaig, yet the medicinal/vegetal quality of Laphroaig is replaced by an earthiness. It has a nice lemony flavor which is really lovely. It's quite soft on the palate. It's about as peaty as Laphroaig, maybe a teensy bit moreso.
I'd definitely recommend this to peatheads looking for something heavily peated that's a little different from the usual Islay mainstays.

They do put out a reasonable number of single cask bottles and limited editions though. The site I normally buy from has a 25 year old for £250 or a 1992 26 year old single cask bottle for £450.

Im tempted to get the 18. Glendronach is my favourite distillery. Ive got the old 15, the new 15 and the 21. The 18 is £100 which would be expensive for me, but not unaffordable. But might make more sense to get something completely different and have some variety.

How do you go about buying whisky?
I like to try before I buy, and I enforce this as a rule for bottles over about $70.
But I've got two mates as part of my drinking group with a much lesser risk adversity. On of them dropped $200 on a bottle from their favourite distillery without trying first despite having a backlog of good whiskys they've tried before.
IMO that's ridiculous, I think it's a very common occurrence that the extra money buys you fuck all.
Sure, because it's your favourite distillery you've avoided the risk of not liking it at all, but you haven't removed the risk of the expensive bottle being insubstantially better at the opportunity cost of 3 younger siblings.

It is a tough one. Try before you buy isnt always that easy. Either you try it in a bar, which can prove difficult to buy a measure of the specific bottle you have in mind. And by the time you have paid their mark up, after a few tasters youve spend as much as the bottle would have cost anyway.

Alternatively, you have a decent local whisky shop that offer tasters. For me, that never really works properly. Its normally a tiny drop of whisky in a plastic thimble, drank a few seconds after pouring. I dont find that gives me a great idea of how much ill actually enjoy it, especially with cask strength. You then end up paying 20%-50% above online prices in those kind of places.

Personally if its my favourite distillery, then im happy to just go for it. Otherwise, I read the reviews online. Im not normally looking for a hidden gem, I just want a decent whisky that I know I will like. Hence most of my purchases arent that risky.

Sourcing the right bottle can be hard, but if you can't find it then buy something else. It's not like we've exhausted options.
Here whisky shops that offer tastings also offer the best prices available. And I do find a small thimbleful to be fairly representative. It's the best you're going to get aside from finishing a bottle over a month yourself.

>>13882786
That's fine for base offerings. It's even fine a little above that into cheaper finishes / distillers editions / 15 year olds. But there comes a point where it's no longer a small step up in price.
Also base offerings are easy to find and taste. I've got like 10 base offerings I've tried and liked on my to-buy list.

Have you not had an experience where you've dropped extra money on a bottle and found it to be worse or the same?
I bought the cask strength Glenfiddich 15 after enjoying the 12 and was shocked by its lack of intensity.
I enjoyed Glengoyne 10 and found the older ones to taste near exactly the same.
Old Pulteney 12 is great, as is the 18 - but it's only marginally better.
Talisker has some more expensive duds like Port Ruighe and Storm.
Ardbeg An Oa is not an improvement over the 10 IMO.

105 is consistently slightly more expensive than A'bunadh in the U.S.

you're lucky, because A'bunadh is significantly better (tho 105 is still very good too)

There's a few non meme NASs. Abunadh is one of them; mostly because it's cask strength and exclusively sherry matured.
There's even a few we-don't-have-aged-stock-yet NASs that are pretty good.
Not to mention Japanese it-has-an-age-but-i'm-not-telling memery.

It's beautifully complex. But you can only drink it first because it is so so light. Your diet that day or any hint of allergys / a cold will mask the whole thing. I feel like I've wasted a fair bit of it because my palate hasn't been 110% that day.
If you were expecting more punch because of the abv, No.

Is Maker's Mark good or is it just mass produced dogshit?

It's smooth and inoffensive but bland. It's bourbon for women.

Try to find whisky tastings or conventions.
I went to one in March and just tried out every distillery I was curious about, to get an idea of their general flavor profile.
This way I could sort of judge which ones tasted off for me (for example all Highland Park had this strange metallic taste to me, even the expensive ones)
