I think you need at least some tomato juice, or bloody Mary mix. You are talking about a michelada right? Modelo s version is pretty decent. The best I had was from a restaurant. They had a giant tub of mix. Maybe it was not that great, but I still recall it being better than the canned version. I'm going to have to try it out again. Any favorite michilada recipes? I cannot replicate it.

If I didn't particularly love Highland Park 12, is scotch not for me? Tbh the smokey/salty scotches that people talk about sound interesting to me, but they also say they're not for beginners and recommend stuff like HP12 instead. But HP12 is so boring. Why is smoke/brine not beginner friendly? I feel like those notes are fairly well liked, unless the scotches don't actually taste like smoke/salt and those are only fancy descriptors that don't actually mean anything.

Just try it, r*tard. Smokiness isn’t something people are used to in drinks so whisky people don’t recommend them to people who are just getting into whiskey and recommend sweeter ones because sweet drinks are normal and well liked. I think Highland Park is a bit timid. Not enough sherry, not enough smoke. Kind of like a blend. So you're spot on, try something else.
Smoke is undersold. Actual ash doesn't taste as smokey. Some of them really do smell like a bush fire.
Brine is probably oversold. There's no saltiness in most whisky, so the presence of any gets noted down on the bottle.

There are various newbie reviews you can look up, but I think this one gets the gist across.
>The worst whisky i have ever tried to drink. Still trying!!
>Got a bottle for fathers day. You Beauty !! I like a shot straight ! Not this one !!! Smells like a cross between the worst medicine I have had and petrol. I think someone is duping us. I didn't pay for this bottle, as it was a gift , but this it atrocious and not fair on the purchaser who thought he was buying dad a good bottle. Expensive bottle , Yes!! Good , no bloody way!!!!!!

>>13835926
There's a few whiskys with the barest hint of smoke that don't have peat. But peat causes smokey flavour, so yes in the vast majority of cases.

Wine is too hard. The only way to learn about it is to go to tastings and try tens of thousands of bottles.
Does region matter? nah. You might derive some minimum standard for a region for a particular year in that region, but it's not that helpful.
Does age matter? a little. If it's too old it's fucked. If it's fucked, try waiting until it's old and if you're lucky the right flavours will mellow out. Buy now drink now anyway.
Does variety matter? actually yes. Try one from each section in your bottle shop, avoid the ones you find boring or offensive.

This is helpful, thanks. What are the best beginner bottles to see if I like the smokey ones? Some of the ones I have access to are Laphroaig 10 (32€), Laphroaig Quarer Cask (34€) and Talisker 10 (30€), Bowmore 12 (27€). What's the big difference?

i really disagree. the fact that vokda, gin, rum, and tequila are all clear spirits (or can be clear spirits), doesn't make them functionally the same, and while vodka's flavorlessness is a plus in some cases (like when you want to get fucking shitfaced and you don't give a shit about what it is because you need the fucking medicine in you NOW), sometimes you want something that tastes like something.
personally, i think that rum, with its rum flavor, tastes great with lime juice and sugar, better than just vodka. desu i agree with you, darker stuff (plantation's pineapple, overproof, and xaymaca especially, you're damn right!) are killer in this context, but i am trying to ease anons into the rum lifestyle. i think plantation 3 stars is a good place to start with rum because it's definitely a step (few steps actually) removed from whitegirlwasted bullshit like bacardi, and a gateway to the wonderful world of rum, rhum, and so forth.
RUM IS A GOOD DRINK. FUCK. WHY DOES NO ONE KNOW THIS???? IT'S THE MOST VERSATILE FUCKING SPIRIT OUT THERE, YOU CAN HAVE A GIN-LIKE-RUM OR A WHISKEY-LIKE-RUM FROM THE SAME DAMN DISTILLER. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DRINK RUM FAGGOTS!

Gonna buy either Botucal (Diplomatico) Reserva Exclusiva or El Dorado 12 for my first rum after my current alc bottles are done, which do you think is better? I'm tending towards the Botucal. Also is Don Papa shit? (yes I know these are sugared rums, I want to start with one like that)

>> No.13839287

>>13839270
Botucal Diplomatica, if you're choosing between those two and price is no issue, is strictly speaking """"better"""", as in i'd prefer to sip it like you might sip a good whiskey. El Dorado 12 is great, but for whatever reason i tend to use it as a flavoring agent with other rums in cocktails. Neither is a bad choice and sipping El Dorado is definitely not a bad experience, but you'er on the mark if you're going for Botucal. Can't miss here, you've obviously done some research and you're in the right place/.
Also, to my earlier point, FUCK that shit about sugared rums. Rum is a complex spirit with many variations, including sweet ones, and that is a GOOD thing. These that you're talking about aren't what i'd consider "sugared" rums at all. They're quality rums, which are distilled from molasses. That makes them sweet, but it doesn't take from their quality or their depth of flavor. If you like sweet, they are 100% a great way to experience some of the depths that rum can offer. I'd call bacardi vanilla a "sugared rum" in that it's fucking white rum with artificial vanilla flavoring in it. Neither of the two you've mentioned are that at all. A botucal diplomatico is a quality spirit that you will enjoy, if you're prepared for sweetness.
Also yes, i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but don papa is pretty much shit. It's not literally the worst thing you can buy, but it is close.

hello this is the last post 2nite from drunk-rum-anon, you are also correct in a broad sense, but in my experience few people are /alch/ enough to keep 4+ different rums on their shelf to tailor their drinks perfectly. i find plantation 3* to be a really good all around white rum for most cocktails (to my taste, including cuba libres, though i err on the sweeter side in many cases), and (importantly!) considerably better than the miserable trash bacardi puts out, which is the only rum most people seem to know.
honestly, i'd love to educate the world on the benefits of a well placed JM agricole, but i'd rather at least one anon start his journey into rumworld with a solid base of quality liquor, rather than tasting some bacardi his idiot 19/y/o sister gave him, spitting it out, and never touching rum again.

weird! where do you live (just state, im not tryin g to dox u)? where i am, the botucal is way harder to get and more expensive.
either way, if you enjoy the botucal, definitely go for the el dorado 12, it's fantastic stuff, and if you enjoy sweetness it'll be more to your taste than mine, so you should enjoy it a lot. additionally, without looking like a plantation shill, i'd try their original dark, which is less sweet but still complex and flavorful without being too bite-ey and alcoholic (which i assume you're trying to avoid). if you want something flavored without being fake garbage, their pineapple is fucking awesome for cocktails.
if you're willing to spend more, zacapa solera 23 is fucking incredible - sweet and rich and incredibly deep without being too much of a wine-snob bullshit fest about red fruit notes (be wary of rums claiming to be solera aged btw, few of them really are, and it's a big marketing buzzword they use to upsell shitty bottles nowadays. it rarely makes that much of a difference unless its from a brand you specifically enjoy and trust).
enjoy the world of rum, anon!

Germany. I thought the naming was Botucal for EU and Diplomatico for US.
I wouldn't mind trying less sweet rums afterwards too. For Plantation I'm looking at the 5 year Grande, it's really cheap at 24 bucks. Appleton 12 and Mount Gay XO are on the list as well.
I also like to make cocktails but I found that most rum based ones like the Mai Tai require multiple different rums rather than a single one which makes it a bit hard to get into.

Laphroaig 10 tastes very smoky, with iodine and nuts. Quarter cask is younger, loses the nuttiness, but has an oakier flavour. Nice, but I think it should be a fair bit cheaper than the 10. Not a beginner whisky; the review I posted was for Laphroaig 10.

Talisker is spicy, briny with medium smokiness. I think it is a good introduction to peat since it isn't that strong and isn't medicinal at all.

I can't remember if I've had Bowmore 12. Supposedly sherry finished which is always nice (dark fruits), lightly smoky with a hit of citrus. Horst recommends it, and he's never steered me wrong;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFXyy-uzAVo.. I might have concerns about intensity though.

Talisker or Bowmore. Given that Bowmore is cheapest for you (and most expensive for me) I'd go with that. But pick what you like the sound of.

You could kinda calculate, which one is more expensive to produce. People tend to overestimate the costs of aging while underestimating the tax. Production cost shouldn't be that high either because malt is a relatively cheap resource. Small quarter casks should be much more expensive though.

The tax is about $3AUD.
The casks are expensive, but how many are really being used for the finishing process? Also why are you wasting nicer casks on a younger spirit?
The abv itself is probably irrelevant, since you lose about 9% in 10 years anyway.
Cost of ageing? you're right, it's probably fuck all.
But in the end it tastes worse. Not a lot worse, but for fucks sake stop thinking you can get away with a shortened ageing process. It makes you look like Glen Moray instead of Glenmorangie.

I would say that shorter ageing can be good if you want a tougher spirit. I haven't had Laphroiag 10 for years and tried it lately. It was much smoother than i had in mind. Too mellow for me personally. So either you could add more abv or age it shorter so the spirit is rawer and imo more fitting for a very smokey whisky.

I would also appreciate the use of oak chips as long as they'd be transparent with it. I mean there is still enough shit happening right now with using "wet barrels" refilling sherry in their barrels just for a very short time and then putting it in another barrel over and over again or similar things.

Just use whatever you have on hand. Tried many tiki drinks, which call for 3 different rums and you can't really taste a big difference if you switch some for others. Especially the regional rum requirements in drinks are bullshit imo if the drink has like 10 ingredients. The fine nuances of aged rums also get lost in such drinks too imo. So if you have enough money and space buy whatever you want but if not just buy a white rum you like (maybe two, one being more on the sweeter floral site and the other being more dry), a dark/black rum (not often called for), some aged rums (especially jamaican and demerara) and maybe some special ones like martinique, barbancourt or overproof although you won't need those very often and they're harder to get and more expensive.

This works for drinks as long as all required rums are molasses based and don't call for rhum agricoles. Also the drink should have some flavourfull ingredients. In a simple drink like a daiquiri you could taste two different rums but not really anymore if you use different syrups and juices. Some of those recipes are just pure snobism.
So if i'm lazy or short of cash i do it like in following examples: light+aged=slightly aged, dark+aged=dark+cheap filler rum because dark rums have a penetrant taste and overpower everything. Light rum+aged rum+dark overproofed rum=what even is this combi? Dark rum and Bacardi 151 will do the same as drinks that require such combos have like 3 different syrups and juices, absinth, bitters and so on.
In my experience you won't even gonna make any of those drinks with tons of ingredients often anyways as they are a pain in the ass to make, expensive and not even better than the more simple ones. >In my experience you won't even gonna make any of those drinks with tons of ingredients often anyways as they are a pain in the ass to make, expensive and not even better than the more simple ones. Personally i make those drinks correctly the first time or at least try to substitute the rums in the best way possible and then never do them again or make simplified versions of that drink because it will taste similar enough to me.
What are the best simpler rum cocktails in your opinion? Other than daquiri. I want to make Jungle Bird, Planters Punch and maybe Pina Colada. These don't seem very complicated, other than I think the first two requiring two rums. But maybe I can make do with just one and see what happens... Honestly it's been like 10 years since I've last tried pineapple, and back then I hated it, so I don't even know if I will like the pina colada lol. But my taste buds have changed a lot since then and I like most things now.

Original Mai Tai recipe calls for aged Agricole and Jamaican which are pretty unique and distinct

Or if you want a great generic dark rum that won't break the bank look for Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum or El Dorado 5year

Tldr use Demerara Rum for everything except daiquiri

How can I tell the type of a rum? I don't think it says on the bottle. What's Barbados 5 or Botucal Reserva or Appleton 12 for a type for example? And what's the problem with just using this demerara thing for a Mai Tai, other than not being authentic? Does it not taste good?

>> No.13849547

>>13849514
Really depends on the rum. In my eyes the perfect daiquiri is made with agricole blanc, preferably rhum jm or neisson - but a daiquiri made with a nice blended white rum is an incredible thirst quencher on a hot day and imo benefits from being less rich
>>13849516
Not that it won't taste good but that it'll just taste slightly different as Agricole rum and Jamaican rum are very distinct.

The majority of rums are distilled from a molasses base and the differences mostly stem from where the rum is produced. Demerara rum just indicates that it was distilled in Guyana. Rum from Jamaica incorporates distillate byproduct back into new batches s it gets a certain "funky" quality to it. Rhum from Martinique also known as "rhum Agricole" is distilled from fresh pressed sugar cane juice and tend to be kind of earthy grassy and savory.

Appleton 12 is aged Jamaican rum
Botucal reserva is some kind of Venezuelan nonsense and Barbados 5 is rum produced in Barbados that has been aged for 5 years

-Hurricane: Dark rum, passionfruit syrup and lemon/lime juice
El Presidente: Light (cuban) rum, curacao/triple sec, grenadine, dry/blanc vermouth
Hard to give some suggestions though because many tiki drinks require unconvetional ingredients and i don't know if you already have those or even can get a hand on.
>>13849516
If it has an age statement it's aged rum. Although everything around 5 years could also be considered slightly aged. Traditionally aged means more like 12 years. Martin Cate the owner of Smugglers Cove made a list of rums in his tiki cocktail book but i don't know if you can find it online somewhere.

Yesterday I made an old fashioned but with Jameson instead, and maple syrup instead of regular sweetener, it was great. Do you think it would be better if I bacon washed some of the whiskey? The grease doesn't go straight into the drink. The whiskey and grease are in the freezer now. When the fat all solidifies on top I'll drain the whiskey and strain it, then repeat the process until there's no more fat to solidify on top.
