I love Trump. We right-wingers are the people holding this world's morals afloat. We've been derided, demonized and cast aside. But Trump changed that, he gave us a voice, he gave REASON a voice. He pointed at us and showed the world that the noble virtues of conservatism are still here, making the world a better place. We won't hold our heads down. There's a bright dawn ahead of us and as right-wingers, we'll welcome and protect it from you trannies. We are led by brave and smart men like Bolsonaro, Netanyahu and Trump. Bozkov Republica, a Czech made rum.
Basically what happened was that when Czechs were under control of the commies they couldn't import products from western countries so they had to get creative. In comes a """rum""" they called Tuzemák, which was actually just potato vodka that was flavored to taste like rum, and quickly became one of the most popular spirits in Czech. Fast forward to today and Tuzemák is still very popular, and mainly produced by Bozkov, but after a legal battle with the EU they were forced to change the labels of the bottles because it could no longer legally be called rum (which leads to some funny shit, when I was in Czech I found bottles of Tuzemák that were labelled "um" or "run").
While the fake rum is still around and very popular, they have also made a couple of genuine rums to add to their line, the republica line, with the 8 year old exclusive and a 12 year old called reserva.

It's pretty good rum.

I'm not going to waste my time telling you how wrong you are, but I'll address your first point:

>1. take your white licour (any kind is fine)

No, not any white "licour" is fine, because this isn't fucking vodka. Whiskey has to be distilled from grains. Not potatoes, not fruit, not any other shit. Just grains.

Not only that, but the grains used yield very different products. Bourbon has to be, at a minimum, 51% or more corn (there are several more criteria necessary to qualify a whiskey as a bourbon, but we're just talking about your first point). The other grains can be anything: wheat, barley, etc.. The final product tends to be a little sweeter than most other whiskeys.

Rye, on the other hand, has to be, at least, 51% or more rye grain. Rarely are there 100% rye whiskeys, because rye is temperamental and hard to work with (and, unlike vodka, you're concerned about flavor, not just producing a flavorless, neutral spirit). Rye whiskeys tend to have a spiciness to them.

As soon as you throw something into the initial mash that's not a grain, you no longer have whiskey.

See? I spent all that time (and could have elaborated further) on just that first point. The initial premise was wrong, so why bother wasting my time to educate someone who's, clearly, too stupid to educate?

>> No.13828654

>>13825758
But that's all gin is. It's neutral spirits (vodka) with juniper steeped in it. It can be any neutral spirit, it doesn't require any aging or blending or special handling... How is that different from anything on the Smirnoff line (with the exception that they probably just use syrups for flavoring)?

>Noob question: does rye whiskey taste like rye bread? If I dislike the latter, will I also dislike the former?

Actually, that's a good question.

Here, one of the most important things to realize is that, especially in the U.S., the vast majority of rye bread made and sold contains caraway seeds, so much so that, when most people think of rye, they, also, think of caraway. They're that intertwined.

If you can only find rye bread with caraway, then pull out one of those seeds and eat it, on its own. You'll find that it has a very distinct and strong flavor. If that's the flavor you dislike, you're in luck: rye whiskey doesn't contain caraway (or, at least, I've never run across one that does). Then, take a piece of the bread that doesn't have any of the seeds in it and try that (doing your best to direct your attention away from any residual caraway flavor that may still be there). If you taste the actual bread and still find it disgusting, you probably won't like rye whiskey.

Personally, I feel like the rye, on its own, has a very mild, pleasant flavor that's easily overpowered by caraway (I like caraway, but I don't understand why it has to be in all rye bread; it really takes over).

It is in the same sense that whisky is flavoured vodka, but worse because oak is the only flavour. Whisky doesn't require ageing, blending or special handling. 2 weeks of wood chips will turn it brown and make it whisky tasting.
Gin's problem isn't a lack of quality. Or even a lack of barrel ageing. It's the complete unpredictability caused by so many botanicals being used at once. It completely ruins any sort of price / time /effort correlation with quality.

Does anyone with 5 whiskys they've bought before on their shelf have any place making lists?

Firstly I'd refute the question. The difference in quality between similar whiskys is not enough compared to the price fluctuations caused by sales. Always buy on sale.
Secondly those whiskys are well known, they're not trying to undercut the market. Glen Moray is a would be Glenfiddich / Glenmorangie competitor, the 15 is under priced. Dalwhinnie 15 is probably the only other easily obtainable cheap whisky of that age. Loch Lomond 18 comes in way under price ($10 cheaper than the Lagavulin 16 atm). If you can live with the sharpness, Ledaig is cheaper than the other 10 y/o Islays. Glengoyne has is a really cheap cask strength if that's your jam (given that I wouldn't dilute it, I think the 10 is better value).

Neutral spirits and vokda aren't exactly synonymous. Vokda can have flavorings in it, and I don't mean the fruit flavored ones. Look at some of the cheaper brands that don't have some fruity flavor or whatever, but they'll say they used flavorings in the vokda. It helps mask the cheap quality. Neutral spirits usually means a higher proof too. Vodka is neutral spirits that has been diluted, and may have flavoring. This is why Everclear isn't exactly advertised as "vodka". Grey Goose is just some commercial neutral spirit made from French wheat, then diluted and sold.

Crap. A real response.

It's true that, for a lot of whiskeys, there is a strong, woody flavor, but that's far from it. The aging process brings other flavors to the forefront, which is why a rye whiskey and a bourbon whiskey, aged for the same amount of time in the same kind of barrel, will taste different from one another (similar, but different). That's why you can tell the difference between whiskey, brandy, tequila, and aged rum.

Also, I'd argue that the aging process and the flavoring process aren't comparable. Aging takes years and during that time the climate has to be taken into account, the product has to be monitored, some flavors mellow and others become more pronounced. When it's finally ready for consumption, there will be woody notes, but you'll also taste the different grains (for whiskey) and fruits (for brandy). Some crappier distillers will add flavoring or coloring, but a good whiskey speaks for itself.

Gin is really just the herbal tea equivalent of liquor. Take vodka, through some herbs in, let them steep for awhile, and you're done. And vodka is just spirits that have been distilled, sometimes several times, so that any flavors that were in the initial mash have been removed. It's like alcoholic water.

whiskey or whis•ky
[hwis-kee,wis- ]
noun, plural whis•keys

1. an alcoholic liquor distilled from a fermented mash of grain, as barley, rye, or corn, and usually containing from 43 to 50 percent alcohol.

Also:
Whiskyorwhiskeyis a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Various grains (which may be malted) are used for different varieties, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat.Whiskyis typically aged in wooden casks, generally made of charred white oak.

Any standardized definition will tell you that whiskey is a grain alcohol. Just because a company decides to use potatoes in their mash and call their product "whiskey", it doesn't mean that it's a whiskey, just like how almond juice isn't actually "milk".

Lastly, your rice whiskey article. Did you feel good about that? Did you feel vindicated? Did posting it make you feel so, so superior?

>Almost all whisky, by volume, is exactly 40%.

Are you stupid? 40% is becoming more popular, but there are no shortage of whiskeys that fall between the range if 43%-50%. There are several single barrel and cask strength whiskeys (which are becoming more popular, as well) that are well above 50%. Since ABVs have been measuring and certain standards put in place, whiskey has, generally, fallen within the 43%-50% range. If we take the average of whiskey ABVs of just today's whiskeys, you'll find that the mean average ABV falls somewhere between that range.

...But that's not the the real issue, here, and you already know that. The problem (which you must think you're so clever for trying to exploit) is that your whole post is irrelevant. The definition given is written as such to allow for outliers in regards to that given ABV range, so that they could still fit within the definition of "whiskey". The reason for posting the definition, though (and the whole discussion prior) was about the mash content of whiskey and how only grains are allowed. You saw that, realized how wrong you were, and, to try to save face, tried to be sneaky and throw out a red herring about ABV. You'd lost, already, so you tried to change the matter at hand, but what you had was, at best, a flimsy stance to take.

Why don't you go back to drinking your vodka and Red Bulls and let the adults finish the conversation, yeah?

Yes. I found it via a Google search after I had the idea, "hey, I wonder if anyone has ever tried finishing heavily peated scotch with charred oak like they age bourbon in for double the smoke." That search led me to >>13840348 which finishes 12-18 month old Islay whisky with charred Riesling in a speed-aging "reactor" that works as follows:
Phase 1 Unaged booze and wood are combined in the tank and heated at a temperature between 140 and 170 degrees Fahrenheit for several days. Acids in the wood help turn volatile molecules created during fermentation into flavorful esters.
Phase 2 The mixture flows into a glass cylinder, where light breaks down polymers in the wood. That releases more flavorful molecules and a few things you don’t want, like medium-chain acids and precursors to ethyl acetate—basically nail polish remover.
Phase 3 Back in the tank for more heating, the complex solution undergoes further reactions. The acids convert to esters that in turn bond to other molecules, resulting in compounds with rich, honeylike notes identical to those formed by long-term aging.
The novelty of it intrigued me but I was, of course, skeptical. I found mostly positive reviews of it online, though, and my curiosity got the best of me. I had to have it.
Will report in when I get it. I am so fucking curious about it. To be honest, they had me at Islay + charred staves. The novel tech just makes it seem more fun.

Er, yes, I know most scotch is aged in used bourbon barrels. I meant unused charred oak, to be clear.

Unfortunate. Redbreast 12, Four Roses Single Barrel and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked are all similarly priced at my Costco.
Also, my last two bottles of Laphroaig 10 displayed rather stunning bottle variation. The last one was super iodiney and vegetal, even for a peat bomb. I wasn't too keen on it and ended up mixing much of it with sherry bombs, which was super nice. This last bottle is unusually sweet for Laphroaig and it's lovely.

Close to $37, don't remember exactly. That +/- a buck or two last time I bought it.

Does anyone know a bourbon that comes down to scotch or irish whiskey on the level of sweetness? I've tried three different bourbons so far and I found the taste likened to drinking pancake syrup from the bottle.

>> No.13842847

>>13842819
>Does anyone know a bourbon that comes down to scotch or irish whiskey on the level of sweetness?
Doesn't exist. Bourbon, by definition, is 51% or more corn in the mash bill, so it's going to be sweet. Period.
You may like very high rye bourbons such as Four Roses Single Barrel or Old Grand-Dad 114, though. Knob Creek Rye is also, while called a Rye technically, basically a super high-rye bourbon.

Got pic related after waiting since Christmas for them to sell outside of Washington. Local State store had it for like $20, and I decided to finally try it, and I am not disappointed. The brown sugar flavor is a little stringer than I thought, but other than that, it's great for sipping.
