Use a dish washer for best results.

>> No.13800611

Handwash with soap like any other pan
Unlike other pan:
grease with a light layer of whatever cooking oil
throw it back on the range to cook that off
done

If it's rusting, you need steel wool to scrub it off

Rub your preferred oil all over it. I use pork fat.

Bake it in the oven at 375° for an hour upside down.

Repeat a few times to get a good coating on there.

Only light surface rust. Half a cup of coarse kosher salt or quartz sand, enough vegetable oil to torn it into a slurry, an old rag, some elbow grease and ten minutes of your time will make that like new again.

>I've always heard you should never use any soap on cast iron

Bullshit. I've done it every time I've used my pans for ages, now. No issues, whatsoever. If it gets washed away by soap, it wasn't polymerised to begin with. Myths like these are what make people thinkt hat cast iron is a meme.

CI needs just a few things:
-Clean with soap
-Dry with heat
-Lightly oil
-Leave to cool

Oil it, bake it, wash it. Do this repeatedly. Never stop. Just keep oiling it, baking it, and washing it. Whatever you were going to do--fuck that--just keep oiling, baking and washing. Fifteen years from then, you will be able to cook your first meal. After which--you oil, bake and wash the pan again.

>no soap
You can use soaps today. Old soaps had lye in it, new soaps don't. Lye is bad for cast iron.

If it's really dirty rinse with hot water, then wipe. Never use soap.

Seriously though, that's fine. Just wipe off the rust and give it another seasoning and it's as good as new. The nice thing about cast iron and carbon steel is that you can always fix it. It's not like coated pans that are ruined once the surface gets scratched.

Pretending that cast iron requires special care is a psyop by the nonstick pan industry to get people buying their delicate garbage.

Just cook with it.

It's like how crisco pretended that their vegetable shortening was modern and awesome to get everyone to ditch lard but in reality crisco is trash and lard was great.

>Clean with soap
Only if you want to. Not necessary.
>Dry with heat
No. Not necessary. Just towel dry.
>Lightly oil.
No. Not necessary. It gets oil on it when you cook.
>Leave to cool.
Skip the unnecessary heating and it will be the same temperature as the water you washed it with.

Steel wool and hot soapy water then reseason it then never use hot soapy water on it again unless you are going to season it again. Then cook with it. Cooking with cast iron is one of the best ways to maintain seasoning.
