We didn't completely run out of paper products by the time I left yesterday night, but only expensive stuff was left. Same with bottled water, all the Kroger brand sold by the afternoon and we only had 6 dollar cases of Aquafina and deja blu left. Hand soap and sanetizer gone of course, rice and dry beans hit pretty hard, canned aisle was maybe 50 percent full. The one thing that didn't make sense was still plenty of beer...I would think if people are self quarantining that they'd get pretty bored sober. I stocked like 3 pallets of milk and we're definitely running out today until our next truck tomorrow. Got plenty of eggs and cheese left though for our sales ad.

I'm in a weird spot because someone said to me they bought more than the usual amount of groceries, two weeks worth. They seemed like they were trying to impress me with how much foresight they had.

For years, I've been buying a month worth of groceries on a single day because the grocery has a lottery system one day a month so it makes economical sense to buy all your groceries on that one day. So my normal every day living style is double what people preparing for a pandemic are buying. I really have no idea what normal people do, are they really going to the grocery store every day or something? Two weeks doesn't seem like that much food to have on hand at once.

I dunno. It's still three weeks until lottery day but i wonder if I shouldn't go stock up early.

I do, kinda, yeah. I live right next to one so it's easier to just walk over and get things fresh as I need them. Like it makes no sense to hoard lettuce or milk since it won't last anyway. Only item missing was toilet paper in the entire store, but it was obviously busy in the soup area, despite no sales there. Really weird hoarding patterns here.

Not a single mushroom left, but still tons of every other type of veggies.

All bananas gone, but every other type of fruit left untouched.

No bread. I'm estimating the store got cleaned out of about 200 loafs by 2pm today, but I'm willing to be that got split by less than 10 people. Now, that at least makes some senses in 'staple food' way, but there were tons of dairy, eggs and meat left.

Pasta aisle cleaned out, but canned goods still stocked to the brim. Legumes, rice and beans by the metric ton right next to them, even bulk sacks.

TP all gone, but plenty of every other conceivable type of hygienic product, including soap.

Nobody bought any beer or wine. Still plenty of bottled water too.

Brainlet. High mortality rate means less transmission. This isn't Medieval Europe, we're not handling bodies unprotected anymore. High mortality viruses evolve into low mortality viruses quickly because viruses run on the same fundamental evolutionary strategies as every other form of 'life' (viruses aren't life, but they're similar in a lot of ways). Killing the host is bad for the virus. It means the virus dies too unless it gets lucky enough to infect someone via the corpse.

TP is a bulky cheap product with a normally steady turnover. To save space supermarkets stock what they think they need and no more.
People start panic buying and a common item is TP. Since there is less TP stocked compared to smaller offerings like hand sanitizer and canned food it runs out first.
News hears about TP shortages and blasts it all over.
Stage 2 panic buyers hear that TP is selling out and decide that it must be the most important thing to buy further resulting in shortages.

Why do Americans need to prep so much? It's not like it's a big secret that excess is practically a core part of American culture. Every time I was there, everyone had these gigantic refrigerators and pantries that were bursting with food. It was a near-daily occurrence that something had to be disposed of because it had rotted or molded. Do they just not know how to do passive meal planning? It's so bizarre to me. There were longer than average lines at the supermarkets here in eurocuckland and the shelves were also looking thin, but nothing near the pandemonium that I see in the images of walmarts and costcos. And even the most inexperienced students have base-food stocks that can feed them for weeks. Are these just outliers?

You can't bloody wipe everything down and expect any safety if it sits around for more than 3 days. Anything but extremely autistic wiping and spraying of everything you ever buy or touch will spread it around the house.

That means going over all the packaged food that people have touched and prodded at the store. Washing all the clothes you've put your hands on after touching the packaging, especially in the pockets where you cant clean easily. Wiping over keys, wallets, handles, tables, etc. Because even if the first thing you do after coming home is washing your hands and cleaning everything you brought, it can take just one touch inside a pocket or your chin and you'll spread it on your previously clean stuff. Then without knowing you'll touch that again and then touch other stuff. Bam everything is unsafe again. No one will bother going this far anyway.
