Drinking this jawn rn. Found a free coffee cupping event on Eventbrite. They gave us the unused bags of the tasted coffees. Got like $40 worth.

This stuff is great. Very juicy/fruity, sweet. Probably get more, but it's a little on the pricy side for me.

Buy a $20 popcorn popper from sweet marias. They give you 4lbs of beans when you do so the popper is basically free. Split the heater and fan out into a tc4+ board. This'll let you independently control your heater and fan, and design/save/replicate roast profiles through artisan. From there run that piece of shit popper into the ground while you teach yourself how to roast, then rip out the tc4+ and wire it into something better.

Boiling water absolutely does negatively affect coffee. It's one of the reasons why cowboy coffee, Turkish coffee, and cheap homemade espresso are so bad.
Using water straight off the boil for a V60 does not negatively affect it, but that's only because by the time it's in contact with your grounds it's well below boiling. If you, for some reason, tried to brew a V60 inside a 100C (212F) oven it would be bad.

make a single cup of instant coffee columbian by starbucks i picked up at the grocery store. started my breakfast at 630pm. I had not had coffee for weeks.. it was the best tasting thing. it was marvelous. I loved it. then I got down to the last 1/4th of the cup and it felt like a chore to finish it off. I'll make a smaller cup next time.

Nespresso is halfway to an espresso (I think it's around 6 bars or something) so it's much more concentrated than a "normal" cup of coffee. Two pods diluted with water probably gets you close.
You should definitely buy a French press instead as long as you're okay with spending a little bit of extra time to prepare your coffee. I doubt you'll be able to sell the machine though. Nespresso's business model is to basically give away the machines so they can sell you overpriced pods.

Yep, bought a shitty grinder and there was almost no difference, started roasting my own coffee, even at an absolutely pleb level, and the difference in quality is insane. I can't buy freshly roasted coffee where I am, so this is by far the best way to drink coffee. I think roasting your own beans is assosciated with snobbery because it's the final level of being "into coffee" but it's incredibly easy to get a decent product. I have a shit 10 grinder, I'm using shit beans off amazon, and I roast them in an electric oven in a cast iron pan. I'm slowly looking to improve all these things, I can tell the coffee I make isn't that great, but it's far and away the best I've had within a hundred miles of where I live. A $5000 setup with old beans will brew shit coffee, you cannot escape this.

Older poppers are made with better(both longevity and higher wattage) heaters. The guy who makes the tc4+ board, Matthias, is over in either the uk or nl, so you can get that quick. Absolutely stand up guy, my board ended up shorting somehow, dude replaced it and didn't even charge me shipping. 99% of popcorn poppers you'll buy are AC heaters + DC fans, with a full bridge rectifier letting the dc fan run on ac power. You can either clip between the heater and fan, solder in some potentiometers, or wire them into the tc4+ and let artisan control your variables with the pid.(Or both, have the tc4+ pid control everything with full analogue adjustment knobs).

Assuming corona-chan hasn't killed everyone who makes them yet, the Timemore slim is a pretty great little brew grinder.

It's got steel burrs, a one piece machined aluminum body, and the shaft is stabilized by two bearings. It's like $80 on Aliexpress and it can't be beaten at that price imo. If you're in the UK and you can get your hands on a madebyknock aerspeed or aergrind for the same price (or within say $20) then I'd strongly consider one of those as well.

The Slim produces an even grind, and the flavor is surprisingly improved over a cheap shit grinder. I already knew how important the grinder is before I got the Timemore, but I was still kind of surprised it made THAT much of a difference. I grudgingly gave it away to a family member who lives in Honduras, a country where they basically don't have access to grinders. That led to me getting my Kinu. And even though I fucking love my Kinu M47, and it's far and away superior in virtually every way... I still kind of miss my cute little timemore. Do note that it's not at all suited to espresso because of the big coarse adjustments.

I'd like some advice on how to get into it but the only thing I can really bear so far is cold coffee. Teafag here, I've heard Americans don't have kettles. If that's the case, wtf do you guys use to make french press coffee? I understand boiling water in a microwave if you only make tea once a month, but surely you guys drink french press coffee like it's water?

As a fellow Merican tea drinker, I looked into this a bit. For one more people drink coffee than tea and they typically make coffee with drip machine. Also since voltage and outlets over seas are higher, electric kettles brew water much faster than a lot of electric kettles in merica; not 100% on this, but what I've read. There's basically no reason the average person feels like they need an electric kettle.

My question was more "what do you guys use for French presses" rather than "why don't you use kettles you uncultured barbarians". Is it basically that people buy expensive drip machines in the same way we buy kettles, and anyone who wants to use french press just does >>13786183?

>> No.13786775

Most use kettles as uncultured barbies. I do think as mentioned the faster speed kettles boil across the pond makes them more useful verses electric kettles that bring to a boil at the same speed as stove top unless you get an expensive model.

Anyone got any recommended brands of K-cups that are reasonably cheap on Amazon for a bulk pack?

Mostly just use the keurig for my first cup when I wake up in the morning and it's nice to have a cup of coffee immediately without having to hassle with brewing a whole pot, but it's nice to have for that reason.

I do cold brew the lazy way. I get a Prego jar and fill it mostly full with filtered water. Then I get a standard filter, fill it with coarse ground coffee up to where I can still pinch it closed enough to tie it with a rubber band. Before I tie it off, I run a bit of cold water over the grounds in the filter and stir with a finger to let it "bloom".

I brew for 10-12 hrs on average and drink it over the course of the day, leaving the bag in the Prego jar (I pour what I'll use for the day into my bottle for work). If there's enough left I'll just fill up the jar with water and let it sit overnight for mellow seconds the next day.

This method is simple enough and I've done it 5 times so far, I'm not looking to change it up too much but if there are any obvious improvements I'd love to hear them, as well as other ways you guys do cold brew.

Do yourself a favor and go get an affogato immediately. Whipped cream on coffee really doesn't make a lot of sense in practice. If you stir it in the heat from the coffee causes it to lose its texture completely, making it essentially the same as if you had just used half-and-half. If you don't stir it in it's obnoxious to drink because you get more on your nose than in your mouth and most of it is left at the bottom of the cup when the coffee is finished.

An affogato on the other hand is the perfect dessert coffee.

My method for the moka pot is: fill kettle with water, boil it, fill the insert with the ground coffee, screw it all together, medium heat, wait until the brew top is full and just barely starts to sputter water, take off heat immedaitely, use oven mitts to unscrew the top and let the steam/pressure out.

Gives a grew brew every time. Most people say to hold the bottom end under cold water but I don't see the point in that cause it can fuck up the metal. Moka pot coffee gives a strong brew that is espresso-like but not real espresso. More like a coffee with some espresso poured in it or something.

If you want regular coffee just buy a nice drip machine, or the old classic pour over.

I find shaking works better than stirring. If you're not getting up to temp, there are 3 things you can do. Don't use an extension cord, longer runs of cord will affect your heater. Add more beans, more mass will trap more heat. I haven't personally done the 3rd, but people run their poppers in a cardboard box to trap hot air. People do preheat their poppers, I'm setting artisan to do it right now. Still working on dialing in a "general" profile for espresso.

Look at this abomination I wired up. Recycling coffee cans is pretty lulzy, but I'm just going to build a box and mount everything next. Screen, bluetooth, fan control, heater control, pid. Everything working perfectly, just dialing in variables now.
