Sorry non-members.

Old news, we had a thread about it over a week ago.
This isn't a new policy, they just started bothering to enforce it in some places. They'd been enforcing it at my local Costco for years because it was close to the university campus. It's harder for them to enforce this at locations where the food court has a separate entrance, but they might start doing that now.

>> No.13754716

Why should non members have even expected access to the food court? Those prices are low because members pay their dues. Doesn't seem any different than expecting to go in and buy groceries.

It makes sense, they sell those items so cheap in the food court that they break even if they're lucky, with the hope that they'll make their money from shoppers on items in the store.

There's no logic in them selling food at zero profit to people who aren't going to buy anything else.

Certain places do have laws against selling alcohol and prescription medication in places that have membership restrictions. A select few even extend that to fast food.

>Why is this a law? For what possible reason?
Most often a strange mix of requiring a license to sell alcohol in the state, while also having expanded coverage under state laws that mirror the federal civil rights act. You can't have a private club that sells alcohol because you need a state license to sell and they have laws that say you can't restrict any access to state regulated activities. They would need to amend their state level rights act to allow denial of state regulated activities by having a private club.

California law defines petty theft as the theft of any property with a value of $950 or less. Most petty thefts are charged as misdemeanors. Petty theft is a misdemeanor if the theft is a result of the shoplifting offense and the offender has no prior criminal record, or if the value of the stolen property is $950 or less. A misdemeanor conviction for petty theft in California carries a sentence of up to six months in county jail, a fine of no more than $1,000, or both. (Cal. Pen. Code, § 490.) However, if the property has a value of $50 or less, the prosecutor can charge the offense as an infraction, so long as the offender has had no other theft-related conviction. Petty theft charged as an infraction is punishable by a fine of no more than $250.
