I just think that the nuances of place and oak aging give much more than the combinations of botanicals in gin.

Eh, I think that those that are specifically designed with something else in mind (like, for instance, the Planter's Punch for rum), gin doesn't outperform. What gin does is that the juniper and herbal flavors of the gin mix with everything else really well. If you treat mixology a lot more scientifically, gin doesn't have any real obstructing flavors (scotches tend towards peatiness, you get very grassy flavors from rhum agricole, rye whiskey is very heavy towards the spice end), but it contains inherent distilled flavors which vodka doesn't really have. It's essentially a higher level vodka, especially because the inherent distilled flavors of gin have tendency to create molecular bonds with other things (quinine is the classic, resulting in the gin and tonic, but also lemon, lime, a variety of other herbal elements, and much more).

Both corn and rye Woodfords are similar, they're very smooth. Woodford rye is the same as regular Woodford except for that distinct rye taste. Woodford is one of my favorite bourbons, but if I were to recommend a true rye whiskey then I'd go for Bulleit, it's way more of a full bodied rye whiskey than Woodford which is much smoother with rye finish, plus Bulleit makes a superb old fashioned. Idk about other countries but Lidl/Aldi/Penny produce some very good gins (and some other alcohol) for a low price in Germany. Like 8 bucks for 0,5, which is waay better than Tanqueray and friends.

online, obviously. you can order it from anywhere in eastern europe I guess, and easily from Russian / Belorussia. would cost you for about 150-200 bucks max, but from good stainless steel and shit and will last you literally decades. .

I mean, I have a hardware store setup, but that one just looks more clean and efficient. Obviously, it's illegal to still in this "free country." Brewing and winemaking is open since the Carter administration, but the tax man still wants its share of revenue from spirits, so it makes it harder to find out-in-the-open purpose-built stills like that picture.

>> No.13742575

>>13742555
then you can easily make it yourself. really, just read some online manual, basically it is just a metal barrel with some added things. and you can make fuck ton of good spirits out of that, from gin to malt "whiskys", calvados or grape spirit like grappa. it is illegal, I guess, but who can find it? no one cares until you start smuggling and selling out your spirit.

Yep, I have a pot, sleeve, coil, thump, and thermometer. It works fine, but it's kind of a bitch to get set up, which makes my lazy ass distill less. Will have to look into getting a more efficient set-up.

Bombay Sapphire is just absolute perfect with tonic, especially if you have that 47% ABV one. you can also mix it with coak, but it's just a lit bit worse.

A few ones:
>2 parts gin, 1 parts lemon or lime juice, 1 parts syrup of your choice
The basic sour, but open to infinite variations with the syrup (literally just boil water and sugar in equal proportions, unless it's maple syrup). Cinnamon syrup? Pomegranate syrup? Maple syrup? Honey syrup? Do whatever you want. Experiment down that route. And, if you want simplicity, just do simple syrup.
>2 parts gin, 1 part dry vermouth
The Martini. Can't go wrong with the classic.
>an Old-Fashioned, but with gin
This works really well, and gin is such a nice spirit, it'll work with whatever you have at hand.
>3 parts gin, 1 part lemon/lime/grapefruit juice, 1 part syrup of your choice, 2 parts pineapple juice
Alright, this sounds a bit weird, but it dives into tiki, and it works very nicely.
>3 parts gin, 2 parts orange juice, barspoon of grenadine, dash of absinthe if you have it
The Monkey Gland. Honestly, a really fun drink.

I'm the guy that posted the pic. Here in Portugal Hampstead Gin is 6,80€ for 0.5L. Great gin for the money, not as good as Wild Burrow tho, which is another Lidl exclusive that costs 13€ for 0.7L. Wild Burrow is an amazing gin for the money, fragrant, strong coriander/cucumber note. Better than Bombay Saphire, and cheaper too of course.

If any of you on this thread have access to Wild Burrow, buy it. Even at 25 buck a bottle it's a great value.

And then there's the fact that each gin contains 10 random botanicals meaning the quality of any bottle is a complete fucking dice roll.

Gin is decidedly mid-low tier. Your chances would be better comparing G&T to beer.
