how much did that run you? I really want a 'integrity' version of talisker, but unfortunately I live in michigan and north 75 isn't available and neither is that special release '15. I think both are still chill-filtered and have caramel, but at least they're cask strength or almost cask strength.

my fav is the oogie for sure. I gotta try some islay distiller's editions though, might be knock over the king.

Okay I need some advice here.

8 years ago I tried a Whiskey/Scotch/Rye(?) that my boss gave me a glass of at christmas time. This is in Canada. It tasted exactly like smoked wood and was easy to sip without anything mixed in. I could have sworn it was Kraken Rum but I got a bottle of it last week and it tastes just like Crown Royal which isn't that great on it's own and doesn't have that smokey wood flavour.

I can remember my boss saying it wasn't super expensive, something like less than 100$ for the bottle (That's 60USD) and that it wasn't a top tier whiskey.

I really don't feel like buying different bottles and being disappointed over and over again. I'm also not a huge drinker so a bottle lasts a long time. Is there anything you can recommend that sounds remotely similar to what I described? I don't know where I got the Kraken name from, it could have been somebody else talking about it. I thought it had a unique bottle and it looked pretty dark.

Or just recommend something that has that smokey wood flavour.

JW Black- boring, run-of-the-mill. don't bother
Glenfiddich- boring and run of the mill but worth drinking.
Aberfeldy- have not had it
Glenlivet- between glenfiddich an JW Black, closer to black. I don't like it, would
Highland Park- have not tried it
JW Green- have not tried it, but I know it's comprised of some real solid drams. Frequently rated as the best JW, above any blue that isn't from the 90's (blue was somewhat better in the 90s). Probably worth buying.
Balvenie Double Wood- Buy this one. Perfect entry into the world of single malts. Has a distinct flavor profile, but none of the (glorious) peat that puts newbies off. First scotch I had where I thought "oh hey, I get it, this is pretty damn good!"

Therefore, I love Wild Turkey 101. It's the only decently priced bourbon here. (Portugal) Nice abv too, bourbon under 45% is a crime.

I also really enjoy:

>Jameson Caskmates
Although I wish it were a bit more complex and stout flavored, i suppose they skimped on the casks.

>Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition
Great scotch blend for the price, and a good abv as well (50%)

Im a bit bored of whiskey now. I know roughly what I like, and I know that I can keep spending my money on more bottles, but I dont really ever get surprised. Most things are just a slight variation on something that I have had before.

I've personally tried over 600 whiskies and I'd probably say that OPs pick is probably the best inexpensive go-to with the Rare Breed, Four Roses Single Barrel or Knob Creek Single Barrel (especially older age statement picks for the latter two) being stuff I try and buy regularly. Stagg Jr. used to be more regular to be a favourite but now it's basically impossible to find because of bourbon collector/hoarders ruining everything.
For scotch my favorite go-to is probably Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength when i can find it. Otherwise, it's probably Springbank 10.
>>13721070
Not that guy, but I'm not a huge fan of Talisker and after trying it I bought 3 bottles. It has the same ashy peat goodness of the 8 but less brine and more silky buttery caramels from the extra 7 years in ex-bourbon. It's absolutely delicious.

Macallan "did" make good shit, but that was back in the mid-90s sadly. Any Macallan 12 released these days is an inferior product.
You'd think Diageo no longer being in control of Macallan was a good thing but Edrington have absolutely run their reputation with actual whisky drinkers into the ground. Where a single cask from the distillery goes for minimum $500 USD for a 12 YEAR OLD. Even Highland Park is starting to get stupid expensive like Macallan is now but at least they can be found more easily as indie bottlings. Macallan indie bottlings are scarce AND super expensive.
Glendronach is starting to sadly follow suit. The Billy Walker-era juice that's coming now is easily inferior to their older stocks of the 12 and 15 year. Glenfarclas are way more consistent for sherry.
For best bang for buck Bunnahabhain sherry casks are easily the best shit.

I'm not sure about the idea of a favourite. You're better off building up knowledge of the market and picking something up that's on sale or undervalued.
Also do you count price against your enjoyment? Because I've had a hundred better whiskies than wild turkey, but if you're looking for something at that price range it's a much more justifiable choice.

The best I've ever had would be something like A'bunadh or a Glenlivet 18. Something peated like Talisker Distillers or Loch Lomond Inchmoan would round out that list.
But it'd be easy to top that list by throwing more money at the problem, which I fully intend to do, but my purchasing decisions are rather systematically price driven.

If you're looking for something routinely undervalued, that you'd abandon or delay your journey towards tasting them all for, I'd recommend Glen Moray or Dalwhinnie 15 year olds.

>Glenfiddich 12 / 27€
Smells amazing. Light, sweet, tastes a bit like green apples or pears
>Glenlivet 12 / 33€
Almost identical to Glenfiddich, but pineapple instead of apple/pear
>Highland Park 12 / 35€
A mix of fruity (plum/raisins) and smokey. I found that it lacks intensity. It's certainly better than JW black which I imagine is attempting a similar flavour profile.
>Balvenie Double Wood 12 / 40€
This is probably the only wood dominant one on the list. I felt that there wasn't enough going on in this one to justify the price. It's pretty standard scotch tasting notes of valnilla, oak and light malt.

>JW Green label
An all together different direction to Johnny black. It's a blend consisting of only single malts, and they taste to me like they all come from Speyside (so like Glenfiddich and Glenlivet). It's alright, but I think it lacks intensity. The frit flavours are not that distinct. Not smokey at all.

Of them I would go for Glenlivet/Glenfiddich depending on which fruit you like better.

As much as I am on the side of more flavour is better, I don't find that that "cask strength is better" follows as a result.
I have had a few rather timid cask strength spirits. One distillery in particular, Glengoyne, has such unbelievably minor taste differentiation between products that it really made me reevaluate the value I place on proof and age.
For reference I tried the 10, 12, 15 and cask strength side by side.

Glenogyne 10 costs $70 for 700ml 40% abv. Cask strength is $97 for 700ml 59% abv.
Do you value a cask strength as 50% higher because the abv is 50% higher? I think not. You were never going to water down the cask strength like it's cordial. If they both taste the same then the only other thing that matters is the volume of the bottle and the price. I'd easily rather drink more whisky then get more drunk.

Also grabbed a bottle of whistle pig on sale for $65.

which one?

I tried the old world rye 12 year recently and it's fucking amazing, though not really worth 100 bucks. Smells like spiced cherries and cookies.

Woodford is good and disguises its alcohol content very well, which is why most people love it. Another one is Rowan's Creek.

Yeah honestly. The Black Arts are fucking ridiculous price wise but my experience with it was I got a cheap pour of the 4.1 edition and it was probably the most unique and amazing tasting scotch I've ever had. It's like 300 for the bottle and I want to take the plunge, I just cant bring myself to do it yet

The big branded canadian ones for the most part range from literal fucking drainpour to mediocre at best. There are a number of small distilleries in BC and Alberta that seem to have some good things going on. Cant speak on the East since I haven't gone exploring there

Picked this up while travelling since everyone seems to gush over anything Japanese related and the price wasnt too shit.

Whisky smells a bit young, flavour seems to go from non existent and slightly flowery to strong with alcohol burn. It's not awful but definitely not gonna get anything else from Japan again. Had Yamazaki 12 which is highly reviewed but just tastes like a better than average speyside scotch, I don't see the appeal at all.

Regular ten year straight rye. Very rarely will I spend over 75$ on a bottle of anything. When I do it's at a bourbon festival or something uncommon at a raffle.

I don't enjoy Jameson because I just don't taste that much out of it. Same thing with 90% of bourbon.

I have yet to try redbreast, but so far all irish tastes pretty samey to me. Then again, I guess all I've had is bushmills and jameson, so i guess that's like writing off all of scotch after trying just glenlivet and glenfiddich.

>> No.13735005

I have a feeling that Irish whiskey is going to boom soon enough, similarly to how bourbon has the last couple of years.
Reading online threads and communities a lot of them are hyping up stuff like redbreast and the spots.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the distilleries at some point can’t keep up with the demand and prices will skyrocket

That would be cool but I don't think it'll happen.

Only boomers and oddballs like well done single pot still and single malt Irish. The big blends do well with people who don't care and won't take an interest in the stuff that's more traditional. Whiskey douchebags with insta accounts where they just post their row of Macallan 18s and up over and over again every day are very dismissive of Irish. I don't get it.
