Dane here. I'm ashamed that we export this sour piss.
We produce some very good beers, even basic lagers, and I hate that foreigners associate us with Carlsberg.
Sipping one pic related right now. Not saying that's miles ahead of Carlsberg, but certainly no worse, and it happens to be what I'm having.

Giraf comes as either black, like the one posted, or red.
Black is around 10% vol. and I think red is about 7.2 or something.
So yeah, stronger than Elephant.

Had a Brutalis the other day as well, which isn't a very good strong lager, but has a somewhat interesting backstory.
It's named after a rhino which was adopted from England into a Danish zoo in Givskud in 1990 at the age of 13.
Brutalis proved so aggressive and uncontrollable that he was eventually deemed unfit to exist in captivity and was released into a reservation in Namibia four years later.
He died in 2000 fighting another male for access to some sweet rhino poon.

Why do you think this?
Cans are objectively better in basically every way besides the fact that old bottle lines are a little cheaper to pick up for a start up brewery (but this is less true today than it used to be I think)

Cans protect the quality of the beer better, let zero UV light in. Are lighter so easier to ship and can fit more beer in a smaller space so better for both shipping costs, warehouse space, and fridge space at home. More durable than glass so less break in transit, and relatedly are allowed in more places such as festivals, sport games, music venues, beaches etc where broken glass is too risky to allow glass bottles

The only reason bottles are used at all is the irrational consumer perception of glass bottles being higher end signaling a more valuable product thanks to old timey marketing

I drink lots of vodka. That cleans out my system, and even cleans my teeth (I haven’t brushed in years, and haven’t had a cavity since).

I also eat a liverwurst sandwich pretty much every day – to counterbalance the effects the vodka has on my liver. I make my sandwiches on seeded rye (because it’s the healthiest bread), with mayo (because eggs are the best protein; I use kewpie, because the msg makes it taste better), coarse mustard (good for the white blood cells), zucchini pickles (because they taste good), and a bunch of baby spinach (just for filler; it could honestly be left out).

I also eat a lot of canned fish (mostly sardines, but also the occasional fancy smoked oysters) on saltines. They give you all your essential amino acids, and provide a nice opportunity to try out various hot sauces, which are generally very low in calories, while high in flavor and immensely prodigious to healthiness.

Aside from that, I drink large amounts of water (anywhere between ice-cold to slightly chilled) every day, always through a straw, and sometimes with a lemon wedge.

To each their own, I say, but I’m just shy of 30 and am doing better than most of you.

I read flyover as specifically the midwest, so especially places like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Chicago that excel at BA stouts and stuff like that. Like Goose Island literally invested the style

The problem is flyover is a vague term that many posters use for specifically the midwest but some use it as just a variant of boomer memes in general, and some about the south or the great plains or like Montana even which makes it especially confusing

Like by any metric possible almost all the best beer is American

This will probably even out a bit as more and more people around the world start making good beer. Its kind of happened in the US regionally where basically everywhere but the south its absurdly easy to find excellent beer and even much of the south is ok

I think most Europeans still though genuinely do not understand what they are missing out on. Like I feel most Germans I talked to when I was there have literally never even tried a stout or an IPA let alone a barrel aged barleywine or lambic. I think the less traditional brewing regions will be the first to start seeing excellent beer. Honestly of the places I was in Europe besides maybe London, Budapest had the best selection of beer

I don't want to talk about semantic too much, but you literally cannot make a Lambic outside of Belgium. I know you meant wild ale, but this area was the only place making this style of beer for the 200 years and until recently. I've been to US recently and tried the famous sour brewery like ale apothecary, bruery terreux, allagash, russian river lost abbey etc and in my opinion they don't compare to the classics 3 fonteinen, cantillon or tillquin (and they are generaly way more expensive as well). I'd say even a brewery like lindheim olkompany here in Norway make things as good as here.

Although IPA is not really my favorite style I've tried things like pleny the elder of king julius and I can easily find one as good here in Europe (cloudwater or Lervig for example).

Same for barley wine with Baladin or Lervig.

Overall I get the feeling that US has a lot of good brewery everywhere, but saying that they make the best beer is a bold claim, as it is probably still Belgium.

Germany is shit and they only drink their wheat beer, on this I'll agree.

Well no, some US brewers agreed not to use the term Lambic, but there is no technical or legal reason why they cannot use the term, many others do use it

Well at least in Europe it's a controlled name. But as I said, the name is not very important. My point was that the tradition for spontaneous sour beer are very strong in Belgium and from what I've tasted they make the best beer in this style.

The thing in the US is good beer is just extremely common today, You absolutely can find very good examples of many of these same styles in Europe eventually, but in the US you can go to bars in random cities and just have an amazing and wide selection of styles that is very rare in the rest of the world

Belgium is great for a small number of styles, but in my experience all of those styles are made just as well in the US, hell the best lambic style beers I have ever tried are from Wisconsin in New Glarus. You can certainly argue that Belgium is slightly better than the US at a few styles but there is little argument to be made broadly that anyone but the US is the best at making beer right now. No where else is so much excellent beer of so many varied styles being made so frequently, with such high availability

Even in the 10 years or so I have been drinking good beer the market has improved wildly, stuff that used to be world class extremely rare quality beer is now being made by like 5 different breweries I can walk to. All of my favorite, extremely hard to find stuff of 2012 is now everywhere

My understanding is that the American craft beer movement basically saved this stuff from extinction. Belgians didn't even know what they had and were drinking very little of this stuff but then the American market started to explode with people looking for old quality styles alongside new styles

If you're comparing USA and Belgium, you're comparing 300 million to 10, obviously there is going to be more variety. But I can assure you that if you go to any pub in Belgium you'll have great beer of many different style. Barleywine is the only one I can think of where Belgium doesn't have much. If you can show me a strong old aged ale better than pannepot grand reserva then I'll be very happy to try.

This beer indeed sounds pretty good, but I really think you do not understand how absurdly common, extremely good beer has become in the US.

Like I remember not that long ago when Founders KBS, a bourbon barrel aged stout with coffee, was a huge deal. Every year they would release it and to secure even a 4 pack you probably would have to show up to the liquor store when they opened (if they even allowed 4 bottles per customer). Now like 50% of breweries around here (as the overall number has skyrocketed) are making barrel aged stuff that is just as good if not better and KBS is now on grocery store shelves year round. Like this beer that many considered one of the very best in the world not even 10 years ago is now on US super market shelves year round, this is a huge acheivement

IPAs have a similar story. The hype super rare IPAs of 10 years ago are straight up mediocre compared to most new, successful IPAs today. Like Pliny was the most hyped IPA in the world for a while and now there are literally a dozen if not several dozen better IPAs at any super market.

and mind you the US was probably already making the best beer in the world 15 years ago

Sours are my favorite kind of beer. This one I have is alright though not great. Goses might be my favorite kind of sour. Sours as a whole are quite accessible imo, though goses are probably enjoyable to most people. Sours can be fruity, they can be wheaty, they can be citrusy, or they can be flemish. Sours have a lot of variety.
If you are looking to get into them, I have some recommendations. Dogfish Head's Sea Quench Ale is not my favorite, though it is pretty good and very, very easy to try and enjoy. I like Sour Monkey a lot in part because the taste and also because the 9.5% ABV. It's good and isn't weak.

South German here, i.e. the part of Germany that actually makes German beer famous.
We have a lot of the brew masters here, that kinda go the "craft beer" route in addition to the traditional beers they make.
So you get some 600 year old brewery coming up with a Pale Ale and shit like that and sell that along with their 600 year brewing tradition Lager.
That's not the same as brewery making Pale Ale for hundreds of years, with knowledge being passed on between generations of brewers.
Even a very experienced brewmaster can only make an approximation of that, there is a lot of institutional memory involved in things like this.
A great sum of many small factors make a big difference.

Really, you should probably just look out for the beers each restaurant or pub has on their signs, as most places kinda "commit" to a single brewery, which they will broadcast on their signs and menus (they probably have other beers on tap as well, it's just what you would get when you order a "helles" without specifying).
Those will be the mainstream local brews most of the time, that are really part of the local identity.
But as far as I know, there is an avid beer scene in Nuernberg, so I'd say just be open to try all sorts of things. Visit the multitude of breweries.

I think "red beer" is a distinct specialty of Nuernberg, so try that for sure.
But as a beer fan, you picked a good spot, let me tell you that much, there will be a LOT to try.

Try Rauchbier (smoked beer), which is like exclusively made in Franconia. You could also try Schwarzbier (black beer), which originated in Thuringia that borders upon Franconia.
As a northern German i find Helles and Pilseners from the south kinda bland and boring though. Tastes like German lite beer.

What a shitty and wrong opinion lmao.
If anything, you guys are the ones drinking light beer. All your beer tastes like ashtrays, it's just low quality. Don't mistake pollutants for flavour.
Also, our beer is stronger than yours, what are you even saying.

>> No.13716449

>>13716436
It's true. You should add some hops and bitterness to your beers. Would make them more interesting in taste and much more refreshing. Also the north invented Bockbier that is stronger than anything you had.

>> No.13716468

>>13716449
You just drink the same low quality pilsener that everyone else in the world drinks.
Also, just making a bock stronger doesn't make it better.
It's best somewhere around 9-12 percent.
Jacking that up to 30 does not somehow make that good.
You clearly haven't tried many beers if you actually think like this.
You probably drink industrial beer exclusively.

Drank about 350 different beers in my life. Helles was always boring. Also never said that more abv is better. Northern style pilseners have enough bitterness that 4,9% are enough alcohol. If the beers are less bitter and more malty like southern style beers you add slightly more alcohol to give it a little bit more punch in taste. I'm not even a fan of beers with more than 7,5%. Beers with more than 10% loose the actuall character of a classic beer to me.

You are a tastelet. Also don't say 350 as if that's somehow supposed to be impressive.
If you wanna brag on the internet, you better have an actually big number.

You don't have any variety up there your beer is the same as anywhere else in the world.
When people anywhere think of German beer, they think of Weizen, Oktoberfest, small local breweries, wooden caskets and essentially just bavaria, and not industrial shit like Becks.

It's the fault of babies and people who make them
When will breeders realize they fuck up everything for everyone else? Apple watches should detect pregnancy and notify authorities. If the person fails to immediately move to some shit hole flyover garbage place where alcohol and fun are illegal, the IRS should immediately notify their employer that there is a massive audit pending that can be avoided by simply letting go of the disgusting breeder scum
In this way, problems can be solved without getting unnecessarily heavy handed
