My family likes eating lunch and dinner together family style, so we explicitly mention that and ask for extra plates before we order, but the waiters forget them half the time. More often than not, they take 10+ minutes to get us plates or they forget completely and we have to flag down someone else or get them ourselves. By then, the food is already cold and we drastically reduce the tip.

So you have the plates of food on the table, usually a meat and some side dishes, and so you grab some meat off a plate, a side dish off another plate, ... . That sounds strange.

I've been in restaurants with a family style option that served everything on platters and each person had a plate to put what they wanted on it. Most of those were either Chinese restaurants or barbecues.

If they don't serve family style, it sounds like a strange approach to dining. If they do serve family style, then they should bring the plates automatically.

I have seen people divy up the food between the plates before eating, but not all that often.

Most places I've been to these days are completely understanding about a two people sharing the food, but a whole family doing that in a restaurant where it's not specifically family style might be confusing. Only one person should order and specify what they're ordering is for the table. That way the server completely understands that they are not personal entrees. I think anons family are a bunch of faggots who should stick to family style restaurants if they cannot go one meal without making a big to do about having extra plates instead of just trying a few bites of each other's food, but I think that plenty of American restaurants would be willing to cater to bringing extra plates without it being the hassle anon says it is.

the problem here isn’t that they expect to be served family style, it’s that they ask for plates and the waiter doesn’t accommodate the request in a timely fashion

if you asked for more water or the check and the waiter takes 10+ minutes to get it for you, it’s the same problem

>> No.13693901

I once ate at The Cheesecake Factory and the food took almost 2 hours to arrive. Only reason I didn't leave was because I was with a big party and some of the food arrived and some didn't.
Anyway, we decided not to tip because the experience was super shitty, but the waitress literally ran after us when we left the restaurant to ask for her tip. WTF
I tip 10% all the time in my country because they divide it up between all the workers (including kitchen staff and etc) so it seems fair to me, but the tipping culture in the US is out of control.

I don't think anyone gets paid that low anymore, but it was pretty low, maybe about that pay rate, in a few flyover states just a decade ago. But I believe that the employers still had to pay them the minimum wage if tips didn't make it for them. The tip system doesn't bother me as I figure the cost would just end up in the food price rather than the tip, and I don't have to go to a restaurant with servers or a restaurant at all if I'm not willing to spend what I know if will end up costing me.

Tipping aside, most restaurants are complete shit even in areas with a good food scene. There are a sprinkling of ones that are worth going at all, and the rest are insultingly terrible garbage. There's practically no point in going out to eat to places that serve food you can make at home with ingredients you are able to easily purchase at the consumer level except for some social occasions and breaking up the usual at home routine from time to time.

And the people cooking your food don't get tipped either. As to whether why the front gets tipped out and not the back is beyond me. When everything comes out as ordered in a timely fashion, the only people keeping that is the fake smile that brings the food over.

Fair point. That kind of thing hasn't been an issue for me in densely populated areas with competitive service industries, but anywhere else the servers are borderline retarded and often lazy and stand around like some anons have complained. I wouldn't expect a request so "complicated" to get done efficiently on the first try in the small town I moved to, honestly. The one thing they are really good about is constantly refilling your beverage, but it's like the only thing they are on top of.

former bartender/“server” wageslave here; here are my personal rules:
1) nice restaurant with professional waitstaff, the kind that know your needs before you ask, know the ingredients and preparation of dishes front/back, refill/prebus/drop check without asking: 20% on food, 10% drinks
2) basic sit down restaurant with teens/students/ne’er do wells who are “order takers” not waiters: 15% flat
3) counterservice of any sort: 0%
4) bar: $1/drink, unless im a dick and order some hard to make shit
5) to-go counter: 0% with principal the same as counter service
6) delivery: 10% or $5 minimum

lol what. California has the biggest problem with living wage because cost of living is so high. Its super fucking easy to afford a normal lifestyle on tips alone and no base wage if you live in like Kansas

also the exception only applies if tips bring the rate above minimum wage, if they do not the business still has to cover the difference so its really not a big deal at all
